GLC-SX-MMD uses the Small Form-Factor Pluggable form factor for insertion into compatible Gigabit Ethernet module sockets and network equipment slots. Its electrical-to-optical interface carries 1 Gbps traffic on the 1000BASE-SX link specification for Gigabit Ethernet signaling operations. The optical path uses multi-mode fiber as the physical medium for installed links across supported core sizes and bandwidth grades. Dual LC/PC optical connectors present transmit and receive strands using PC or UPC patch cords. The transmit and receive optical wavelength operates in the 850 nm short-wavelength band used by 1000BASE-SX optics. Maximum reach extends to 550 m on 50-micron cable with 500 MHz*km modal bandwidth for compliant channel operation. Cisco assigns the Extended operating temperature class to this SFP for supported Cisco platforms. Digital Optical Monitoring support provides real-time operating parameter access for link diagnostics through host management interfaces.
With VCSEL transmitter technology, GLC-SX-MMD generates the optical source required for serial signaling over installed channels. The PIN receiver converts incoming optical signals into electrical receive data for the host interface across the receive side. TX power range delivers -9.5 dBm minimum to -3 dBm maximum across the 1000BASE-SX optical output during normal operation. RX sensitivity reaches -17 dBm at the lowest receive power value in the specified receive range for guaranteed operation. With 8b/10b encoding, the line code maps eight-bit data groups into ten-bit transmission symbols for 1000BASE-X operation. RX overload point accepts 0 dBm as the maximum receive power value before receiver saturation under the optical parameters. IEEE 802.3z, IEEE 802.3ah, and SFF-8472 govern Ethernet operation, physical-layer compatibility, and diagnostic monitoring requirements. With 3.1 to 3.5 V supply voltage range, the module runs from the SFP host electrical power rail. At 1 W maximum power consumption, the port budget matches the typical SFP power requirement per interface.
Compatible platform families span Cisco Catalyst 2960-X, Catalyst 3560, Catalyst 3850, Catalyst 4500, Catalyst 6800, and Nexus 9000 Series. Additional platform families span Cisco ASR 1000, ASR 9000, ASA5500, MDS 9000, ME 3400, and NAM 2200 Series. Deployment environments place the module in enterprise campus access, distribution uplinks, wiring closets, and data center aggregation rows. OM2 cable grade matches the required grade for the stated channel distance in standard installed channels. Shop GLC-SX-MMD online from ORM Systems in new and certified refurbished condition. The GLC-SX-MMD serves as the Gigabit uplink from an access switch or access stack into a nearby distribution switch over multimode fiber. The SFP port uses 1000BASE-SX at 850 nm with dual LC connectivity, and the access configuration carries VLAN trunks, voice/data segmentation, or routed access links within the 550 m legacy 50 micron MMF design envelope. DOM readings give operations teams optical power and temperature data during acceptance testing. The access layer gains a fiber uplink that preserves existing multimode cabling while moving copper patching out of the riser path.
GLC-SX-MMD fits short distribution-layer interconnects where adjacent network rooms or cabinets already share multimode fiber. Each switch terminates a 1000BASE-SX SFP on a dual LC pair, and the link carries a routed point-to-point connection, an L2 trunk, or a controlled aggregation member between distribution devices. The 850 nm SX optic aligns with MMF plant used inside buildings rather than long-reach single-mode spans. The interconnect gives the distribution layer a known Gigabit Ethernet path with optical telemetry available for fault isolation and capacity planning.
In a management-plane design, the GLC-SX-MMD connects a switch SFP port to an out-of-band aggregation switch over local multimode fiber. The 1000BASE-SX link separates management traffic from copper user access runs, while dual LC MMF patching places the management switch in a different rack or room within the SX reach profile. DOM data supports checks of receive power before management VLANs, TACACS, SNMP, and syslog paths are accepted into service. The operations plane gains a dedicated fiber segment for device administration and event collection.

The GLC-SX-MMD supports a data rate of 1 Gbps (1000BASE-SX), ideal for gigabit Ethernet applications over multimode fiber.
The Cisco GLC-SX-MMD is a 1 Gigabit SFP transceiver module for multimode fibre connections up to 550 metres. It operates at 850nm, uses an LC duplex connector, and supports Digital Optical Monitoring. The GLC-SX-MMD is part of Cisco's 1000BASE-SX product line and is one of the most commonly deployed 1G SFP modules across Cisco campus and enterprise switch environments worldwide.
GLC stands for Gigabit LAN Card, SX indicates short-wavelength operation on multimode fibre, MM refers to the multimode fibre type, and D denotes Digital Optical Monitoring support. The D suffix distinguishes the GLC-SX-MMD from its predecessor, the GLC-SX-MM, which did not include DOM capability. This naming convention is used consistently across Cisco's 1G SFP optics range to signal DOM availability.
The GLC-SX-MMD is a 1 Gigabit (1000 Mbps) SFP module conforming to the 1000BASE-SX standard. It is not a 10G SFP+ module. For 10 Gigabit connectivity, Cisco offers separate SFP+ modules such as the SFP-10G-SR for multimode fibre. The GLC-SX-MMD is suited to 1G access and distribution layer deployments where 10G throughput is not yet required and existing infrastructure is 1G-capable.
