The 1U rack-mount chassis belongs to the Cisco Industrial Ethernet 5000 Series and includes LAN Base as its standard software license. The series serves manufacturing, utility, transportation and other industrial networks where environmental hardening is part of the equipment requirement. Conformal coating protects the electronics against dust and moisture, while the hardware is hardened against vibration, shock, surge and electrical noise. The discontinued IE-5000-12S12P-10G differs by providing four 1G/10G uplinks. The fixed-interface arrangement requires selecting the appropriate copper, fiber and upstream connections before ordering rather than adding a removable uplink card afterward.

56 Gbps switching capacity accommodates the installed interfaces at line rate. 41.67 Mpps forwarding provides the packet-processing rate for 64-byte frames. IPv4 Static Routing supplies the included routed functions; dynamic routing protocols are outside the supplied license. IE-5000-16S12P carries 1 GB DRAM and 256 MB onboard flash for operating state and software storage. The forwarding resources support 16000 MAC addresses and 1005 VLANs, while STP and LACP provide spanning-tree and link-aggregation control. DHCP Snooping, Dynamic ARP Inspection and IP Source Guard provide access-traffic checks, with SSH and SNMPv3 available for secured administration. IEEE 1588v2 PTP and CIP Time Sync address industrial synchronization requirements. 90W maximum chassis consumption excludes PoE, so input-power sizing must also account for endpoint loads and the selected supply combination. The Cisco IE 5000 supports REP, PRP and HSR for industrial redundancy topologies, alongside traffic policing, egress queuing and shaping.

The Industrial Ethernet 5000 provides four alarm inputs and one Form C output relay. Record the existing alarm assignments and terminal wiring alongside the replacement hardware requirements before issuing the PO.
An existing industrial installation that stages replacement configurations on removable storage needs a matched memory-card line item. The Industrial Ethernet 5000 includes a 1 GB removable SD card, and SD-IE-1GB= is the spare card PID. IE-5000-16S12P has twelve powered copper ports. IE-9320-24P4S-E supplies 24 PoE+ downlinks, replacing the mixed copper/fiber access arrangement with a higher-density powered copper configuration.
Dynamic routing with the included license
LAN Base does not include OSPF, EIGRP or BGPv4. IP Services adds those protocols, but L-IE5000-RTU= ended sale July 26, 2024, with no replacement license.

IE-5000-16S12P identifies an Industrial Ethernet 5000 switch: IE denotes Industrial Ethernet, 5000 identifies the series, 16S covers twelve FE/GE SFP downlinks plus four 1G SFP uplinks, and 12P identifies twelve Gigabit copper PoE+ ports. LAN Base is included; the PID has no separate license-tier suffix.
IE-5000-16S12P is managed through Web Device Manager, the Cisco IOS CLI over SSH or Telnet, RJ-45 or mini-USB console access, SNMP, Cisco Network Assistant, Cisco Prime Infrastructure and Cisco Catalyst Center. Catalyst Center Essentials and Advantage functions require corresponding subscription entitlements; local configuration uses the switch's management interfaces.
IE-5000-16S12P provides 65W with one PWR-RGD-AC-DC-H, 185W with two PWR-RGD-AC-DC-H, and 360W with two PWR-RGD-AC-DC-250 supplies. Each powered copper port supports 30W PoE+. The budget belongs to the installed supply combination, so record aggregate endpoint demand rather than assuming every port can deliver maximum power simultaneously.
IE-5000-16S12P has four fixed 1G SFP uplinks, not 10G SFP+ uplinks. GLC-SX-MM-RGD= supports 550m multimode Gigabit links, while GLC-LX-SM-RGD= supports single-mode Gigabit links to 10km. Specify the transceiver PID, fiber type, reach and operating temperature for each connection when assembling the purchase order.
