ME-X4248-FE-SFP therefore inherits the installed supervisor's capabilities rather than supplying an independent routing feature set. Classic line cards can operate in classic and E-Series Catalyst 4500 chassis, subject to supervisor compatibility restrictions. The module occupies one chassis slot rather than a standalone rack position. Its 30 mm height, 362 mm width, and 273 mm depth define the physical envelope for installation planning. The 0°C to 40°C operating range sets the ambient requirement; installation planning must also account for the host system's requirements.

When an installed WS-X4148-FE-BD-LC needs replacement, moving from integrated BX-D optics to pluggable SFPs changes the spare-parts list. Existing fiber connections do not make the old and replacement optical assemblies identical. Identify the installed endpoints, then specify the replacement module and required optical population before issuing the purchase order.
For a replacement that must boot in an existing system, Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(25)SG or later is the minimum software baseline for this Fast Ethernet SFP module. A card order does not update the supervisor automatically. Record the running image and verify host-system compatibility before releasing the purchase order.
Standalone operation without a host chassis
ME-X4248-FE-SFP requires a compatible Catalyst 4500 chassis and supervisor; the module cannot operate as a complete desktop or rack switch. Include the host system in installation planning.

ME-X4248-FE-SFP access ports operate at 100 Mbps. C9400-LC-48S provides 48 Gigabit SFP ports but requires Catalyst 9400, so migration also changes the host chassis.

ME-X4248-FE-SFP identifies the Catalyst 4500 fiber-to-the-home module with 48 Fast Ethernet SFP ports. The 48 corresponds to the port count, FE to Fast Ethernet, and SFP to the pluggable optical interface. This ordering form requires the GLC-FE-100BX-D48 optical bundle rather than identifying a standalone switch.
The Catalyst 4500 fiber module operates under its host switch's installed supervisor rather than as a separately managed appliance. The supervisor supplies the system's forwarding capabilities and feature set. Confirm the existing host configuration before adding the card; purchasing the module does not establish a separate switch-management system.
ME-X4248-FE-SFP reached end of sale April 30, 2017, and Cisco support ended April 30, 2022. Its first replacement, ME-X4640-CSFP-E, is also discontinued, with support ending October 31, 2025. The forward migration reaches C9400-LC-48S in the Catalyst 9400 family and requires a different host system.

C9400-LC-48S provides 48 Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports, whereas ME-X4248-FE-SFP provides 48 Fast Ethernet SFP ports. C9400-LC-48S belongs to Catalyst 9400 and is not an in-place Catalyst 4500 replacement. Existing Fast Ethernet maintenance and migration to a newer chassis therefore require different purchase orders and host-system planning.
