In a global enterprise with distributed data centers, IT teams deploy the NM-16A 16-port Asynchronous Module on Cisco routers to establish dedicated modem links for out-of-band (OOB) access. When primary IP paths fail, administrators maintain secure, uninterrupted control via asynchronous serial lines—ensuring faster mean-time-to-repair (MTTR), higher network availability, and compliance with enterprise SLAs.
A manufacturing plant leverages the Cisco NM-16A 16-port Asynchronous Module to connect legacy PLCs and serial-based sensors directly to its core network. This modular approach preserves existing automation assets, accelerates IIoT integration, and reduces CapEx by eliminating expensive protocol converters—delivering seamless data flow, centralized monitoring, and improved operational efficiency.
A regional utility company uses Cisco routers equipped with the NM-16A Asynchronous Module to aggregate serial telemetry from remote RTUs and SCADA endpoints. By consolidating up to 16 asynchronous links on a single chassis, operations teams achieve real-time monitoring, faster fault detection, and secure data transport over MPLS—optimizing grid reliability and reducing maintenance costs.

The Cisco NM-16A is a network module that adds 16 asynchronous serial ports to supported Cisco routers for legacy dial-up and WAN connectivity.
The NM-16A is compatible with Cisco 2600, 3600, 3700, 3800 and many Integrated Services Routers (ISR) running the appropriate IOS.
Each asynchronous port on the NM-16A supports data rates from 50 bps up to 230.4 Kbps, depending on cable and line conditions.
The module supports HDLC, PPP, Frame Relay, X.25, V.120 and V.110 encapsulations, plus hardware flow control (RTS/CTS) and software flow control (XON/XOFF).
The NM-16A is supported on Cisco IOS 12.2(5)T and later releases; verify feature images for legacy asynchronous support.
Power down the router, slide the NM-16A into an available network module bay until fully seated, secure the retaining screw, then power on.
No. The Cisco NM-16A requires the router to be powered down before insertion or removal to protect hardware integrity.
Use global configuration mode: interface asynchronous 0/0 – 0/15, set encapsulation, clocking, dialer or IP addressing, then no shutdown.
Yes. It supports both DTE and DCE roles via cable-selectable pinouts; configure clocking on DCE ends and disable on DTE ends.
Use IOS commands such as show controllers async and show interface asynchronous 0/x to view line status, errors and throughput.
The module consumes approximately 10 watts under full load, subject to IOS features and environmental conditions.
The NM-16A measures 7.5” (19.05 cm) wide, 6.7” (17.02 cm) deep and 0.5” (1.27 cm) high, weighing approximately 0.9 lbs (0.4 kg).
Operating temperature: 0°C to 40°C; humidity: 10% to 85% non-condensing. Comply with Cisco router environmental guidelines.
Yes. The NM-16A is backed by Cisco’s limited 90-day hardware warranty and Cisco Technical Support under service contracts.
Typical use cases include remote branch access, legacy modem networks, dial-in authentication servers and asynchronous WAN links.
