Gigabit Fiber Uplinks for Powered Enterprise Access

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I is a managed Layer 3 access switch with 48 Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ ports for powered phones, wireless access points, and other compatible endpoints. Four fixed 1G SFP uplinks connect to fiber distribution links without a removable uplink network module. The Rack-Mount 1U chassis places the Cisco Catalyst 2960-XR in campus and branch wiring closets rather than on a desktop. IP Lite is the network feature set for this configuration, combining access switching with routed-access functionality under Cisco IOS. The discontinued WS-C2960XR-48LPS-I is the lower-power-budget sibling, providing 370W for powered endpoints.

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I price for new stock is $2,987.25. WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I refurb price is $173.15. WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I is in stock and available for next-day dispatch. (terms applied)

Technical Details

216 Gbps switching capacity provides full-duplex forwarding bandwidth for aggregate access traffic. 107.1 Mpps forwarding performance for 64-byte Layer 3 packets establishes the packet-processing limit for small-packet workloads. 740W of shared PoE power determines the combined allocation available to connected endpoints. OSPF for Routed Access, OSPFv3, static routing, RIPv1, RIPv2, RIPng, and EIGRP Stub support routed-access configurations; PIM-SM, PIM-DM, and SSM support multicast forwarding. The default MAC allocation accommodates 16000 learned addresses, while 128 MB of flash supports local image storage. WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I supports RSTP and MSTP for Layer 2 topology control and LACP for link aggregation. Local administration uses a web UI or CLI, with SNMP available for monitoring the Catalyst 2960-XR. 890 VA maximum apparent power provides a facility and UPS sizing reference, not a wattage figure. Adding a second PWR-C2-1025WAC provides internal power redundancy without expanding endpoint power allocation. Built-in uplinks do not support 10G connections.

Ordering

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I is offered new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units and up to 1 year on certified refurbished units; 30-day returns apply to every condition, terms apply. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, every port linking at rated speed, clean boot, PoE output under load on every powered port, and optics bay recognition; firmware is verified and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify condition, quantity, and compatible SFP optics on the purchase order. For enterprise and volume orders, POs are accepted, Net-30 is available for government, and RMA includes advance replacement, with regional stock and RMA across the UK, EU, US, and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Base and add-on licensing

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I runs permanent IP Lite without a mandatory Cisco DNA subscription. Cisco DNA Essentials add-ons have a three-year minimum term; Cisco ONE Foundation is another entitlement for Full Flexible NetFlow and DNS-AS.

Stack accessories ordered separately

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I requires C2960X-STACK plus CAB-STK-E-0.5M, CAB-STK-E-1M, or CAB-STK-E-3M for FlexStack-Plus. Only Catalyst 2960-XR IP Lite members can join; Catalyst 2960-X LAN Base and Catalyst 2960-S/SF members cannot.

End-of-sale migration planning

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I is discontinued, with C9200-48P as its current replacement. Cisco sale ended October 31, 2022, and software maintenance ended October 31, 2023; distinguish replacement inventory from a migration purchase.

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I Use Case

Enterprise VoIP Deployment with Cisco Catalyst 2960-XR 48 GigE PoE 740W

In a 500-seat corporate headquarters, IT teams deploy the WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I to power and manage IP phones over 48 Gigabit PoE ports while enforcing QoS policies. The switch’s 740W PoE budget and IP Lite feature set enable centralized voice provisioning and seamless firmware updates. Outcome: Simplified roll-out of VoIP endpoints, guaranteed voice quality, and a 20% reduction in cabling and power-infrastructure costs.

High-Density Video Surveillance for Campus Security

A university campus implements the Catalyst 2960-XR 48 GigE PoE switch at building entrances to power 36 HD IP cameras and uplink aggregated feeds over 4×1G SFP. The WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I delivers non-stop PoE operations with redundant power supplies and supports VLAN segmentation for video traffic. Outcome: Enhanced perimeter security with zero downtime, streamlined management of video feeds, and a 30% improvement in network resilience.

Retail Branch Network Edge with PoE and Fiber Uplinks

A national retail chain equips 200 branch locations with the WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I to power POS terminals, wireless access points, and IoT sensors via PoE. The 4×1G SFP uplinks connect each branch to the WAN router, while IP Lite delivers essential Layer 2 services and basic CLI management. Outcome: Rapid site deployment under SLA timelines, consistent customer Wi-Fi experience, and a 25% decrease in branch operational expenses through unified PoE and fiber infrastructure.

Best For

Endpoint Power Sizing

When endpoint demand varies between phones and wireless access points, the 30W per-port PoE+ ceiling must be considered separately from aggregate power allocation. Perpetual PoE maintains endpoint power during a switch reload. Record each device's requested power and verify the combined allocation before finalizing the PO.

VLAN Configuration Standardization

When an access design carries many separate endpoint networks, the ceiling of 1023 active VLANs matters more than the VLAN identifier range. IP Lite resource allocation changes with the selected SDM template, so confirm the required VLAN count and routing allocation before specifying a common configuration for the order.

Independent Spare Staging

When spare units must be staged independently of production access links, the dedicated 10/100 Mbps Ethernet management interface provides a separate connection for configuration work. USB Type-A storage supports external flash media. Specify staging access, saved configuration handling, and required accessory quantities before releasing a multi-site PO.

Not Suitable If

10G uplinks to distribution

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I has four fixed 1G SFP uplinks and cannot provide 10G uplinks. The current C9200-48P replacement supports modular uplinks; C9200-NM-4X provides four 10G ports.

Mixed-family physical stacking

Catalyst 2960-XR IP Lite stacks cannot include Catalyst 2960-X LAN Base or Catalyst 2960-S/SF members. Sharing FlexStack-Plus hardware does not make those families valid stack partners.

Cisco support beyond October 2027

Cisco support for WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I ends October 31, 2027. C9200-48P is the current replacement for buyers requiring a non-discontinued switch rather than continued operation of this discontinued configuration.

Questions & Answers

What does the WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I part number mean?

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I identifies a Catalyst 2960-XR switch with 48 Gigabit ports, 740W PoE power, four 1G SFP uplinks, and IP Lite. WS-C2960XR denotes the series, 48 the port count, FP the 740W PoE configuration, S the SFP uplinks, and I the IP Lite feature set.

How is the Catalyst 2960-XR managed?

Catalyst 2960-XR management includes Cisco Configuration Professional web UI, CLI over SSH or Telnet, RJ-45 or USB console, SNMP, and Bluetooth access through an external USB dongle. Centralized paths include Cisco Prime Infrastructure, Cisco DNA Center, and Cisco Network Plug and Play through APIC-EM or Cisco DNA Center; these network management solutions require separate licenses.

Is WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I discontinued?

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I ended Cisco sale on October 31, 2022, and Cisco support ends October 31, 2027. Software maintenance ended October 31, 2023. Existing service contracts can be renewed only through January 29, 2027, with entitlement ending at the last support date.

What conditions and warranties does ORM Systems offer for WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I?

New sealed and certified refurbished WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I units have separate ORM warranties: new units include up to a 3-year extended warranty; certified refurbished units include up to 1 year. Returns are 30 days for every condition, terms apply. Cisco's Enhanced Limited Lifetime Warranty requires original-owner eligibility; Cisco support ends October 31, 2027.

Does WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I require a Cisco DNA subscription?

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I includes permanent IP Lite without a mandatory subscription. Cisco DNA Essentials add-ons have a three-year minimum term and three-, five-, or seven-year options. Cisco ONE Foundation also enables Full Flexible NetFlow and DNS-AS. Manage term entitlements through Smart Accounts; expiration requires deactivating the add-on and reloading to retain base functionality.

How much PoE power does WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I provide?

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I provides a shared 740W PoE budget, supporting 24 ports at 30W or 48 ports at 15.4W. Intelligent power management allocates available power across powered ports. Adding a second PWR-C2-1025WAC preserves redundancy but does not increase the budget, so endpoint demand must be sized collectively.

What uplinks does WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I have?

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I has four fixed 1G SFP uplinks, not 10G SFP+ uplinks or a removable uplink card. The built-in cages accept compatible SFP optics for the required link media. Choose optics for each connection before ordering; stacking connections are separate from these network uplinks.

Can WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I be stacked, and which accessories are required?

Yes, WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I supports FlexStack-Plus with eight Catalyst 2960-XR IP Lite members and 80 Gbps stack bandwidth. Each member requires C2960X-STACK, with CAB-STK-E-0.5M, CAB-STK-E-1M, or CAB-STK-E-3M connecting the stack. Catalyst 2960-X LAN Base and Catalyst 2960-S/SF switches cannot join an IP Lite stack, so verify every member before ordering.

Does WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I support Layer 3 routing?

Yes, WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I provides Layer 3 routed access with OSPF for Routed Access, OSPFv3, static routing, RIPv1, RIPv2, RIPng, and EIGRP Stub. Multicast routing includes PIM-SM, PIM-DM, SSM, and PIMv6 Stub. HSRP and VRRP support routed-link redundancy; resource allocation depends on the selected SDM configuration.

Which power supply ships with WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I?

PWR-C2-1025WAC is the default supply in WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I, and a second PWR-C2-1025WAC is optional. Dual supplies provide switch and PoE power redundancy while retaining 740W PoE capacity. The 1025W supply rating is not actual switch consumption; use the 890 VA maximum apparent-power figure for facility capacity planning.

What is the difference between WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I and WS-C2960XR-48LPS-I?

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I has a 740W shared PoE budget, whereas WS-C2960XR-48LPS-I provides 370W. Both models are discontinued. The 740W version suits larger combined powered-endpoint loads; the 370W version suits lower aggregate demand. Compare endpoint allocations rather than assuming an identical port count means identical available power.

What is the difference between WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I and WS-C2960XR-48FPS-L?

WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I carries IP Lite, whereas WS-C2960XR-48FPS-L carries LAN Base. Both models are discontinued, and their feature sets are tied to the hardware rather than selected by replacing the universal image. The IP Lite version suits existing IP Lite configurations; the LAN Base version suits matching LAN Base requirements.

What is the difference between WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I and C9200-48P?

C9200-48P uses modular uplinks, while WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I has four fixed 1G SFP uplinks. C9200-48P is the current replacement for the discontinued model. The older configuration suits maintaining existing fixed Gigabit fiber access; the successor suits migrations requiring a separately selected uplink module and current hardware.

Is the Catalyst 2960-XR suitable for rack mounting?

Yes, the Catalyst 2960-XR uses a full-width Rack-Mount 1U chassis. WS-C2960XR-48FPS-I measures 445 mm wide, 44.5 mm high, and 408 mm deep, with a weight of 6.7 kg. RCKMNT-1RU-2KX= is the spare rack-mount kit; confirm mounting hardware requirements when specifying replacement units.

Which long-distance stacking options does the Catalyst 2960-XR support?

Catalyst 2960-XR supports FlexStack-Extended through C2960X-FIBER-STK or C2960X-HYBRID-STK, with eight members and 40 Gbps stack bandwidth. C2960X-FIBER-STK provides two fiber stacking ports; C2960X-HYBRID-STK provides one copper and one fiber stacking port. Cisco IOS 15.2(6)E or later is required, and Catalyst 2960-XR IP Lite members cannot mix with Catalyst 2960-X LAN Base members.
