Scenario: A regional telecommunications provider consolidates diverse OC3, OC12 and OC48 customer circuits at its metro edge POP using the MIC-3D-8OC3OC12-4OC48 high-density multirate MIC with pluggable SFP optics. Benefit: Delivers 50% higher port density on a single supervisor line card, reduces CapEx by eliminating multiple fixed-rate modules, and simplifies provisioning across mixed-rate services for faster time-to-revenue.
Scenario: A Fortune 500 enterprise upgrades its campus DC backbone to support legacy OC3/OC12 uplinks and new OC48-level East-West traffic on a single routing platform. Using the multirate MIC-3D-8OC3OC12-4OC48 and interchangeable SFP optics, IT teams run low-rate branch circuits alongside high-speed VM-to-VM links. Benefit: Achieves seamless coexistence of legacy and next-gen links, eliminates forklift upgrades, and enables non-disruptive capacity expansion.
Scenario: A global bank deploys geographically diverse disaster-recovery sites connected by mixed-rate OC circuits. The MIC-3D-8OC3OC12-4OC48, paired with pluggable SFP optics, dynamically ports both OC3/OC12 for voice backup and OC48 for real-time transaction replication. Benefit: Ensures sub-millisecond latency and automated failover, delivers 3× greater link flexibility, and lowers OPEX by standardizing on a single high-density multirate card.

High density MIC handled mixed OC3 OC12 and OC48 traffic smoothly.
Very flexible card for transport environments.
Stable multirate performance under load.
Good choice for consolidating legacy circuits.
Satisfied with reliability and throughput.
The MIC-3D-8OC3OC12-4OC48 is a high-density multirate router interface card providing eight non-channelized OC3/OC12 ports and four non-channelized OC48 ports for WAN aggregation.
This MIC requires Cisco-qualified SFP optics: OC3 (155 Mbps), OC12 (622 Mbps) and OC48 (2.488 Gbps) SFP modules, such as Cisco SFP-OC3, SFP-OC12 and SFP-OC48 transceivers.
The MIC is supported on Cisco 7600 Series and ASR 1000 Series routers equipped with a 3D Multiservice Engine slot and compatible IOS-XR or IOS XE releases.
Power down the router, align the MIC with the 3D Multiservice Engine slot, slide it fully until the ejector lever engages, then power on and verify module status.
Non-channelized ports operate at their full line rate (155 Mbps for OC3, 622 Mbps for OC12, 2.488 Gbps for OC48) without subdividing into lower-speed channels.
It delivers up to 8×622 Mbps (4.976 Gbps) from OC12 ports plus 4×2.488 Gbps (9.952 Gbps) from OC48 ports for a total of approximately 14.9 Gbps.
No. This MIC only supports full-rate, non-channelized OC3, OC12 and OC48 ports and does not provide subrate or channelization features.
Yes. The MIC supports in-service insertion and removal (hot-swap) to minimize downtime when replacing or upgrading the module.
Ideal for service provider WAN aggregation, enterprise WAN edge, and metro ring applications requiring mixed OC3/OC12/OC48 connectivity.
Use interface POS commands, for example ‘interface pos 3/0:1’, set encapsulation (hdlc, atm), clock source and carrier type to enable and configure each port.
Typical power draw is 20 W; maximum power consumption is 25 W. Actual power may vary based on optics and traffic load.
Operating temperature range: 0 to 40 °C (32 to 104 °F), storage temperature: –40 to 70 °C, relative humidity: 5%–85% non-condensing.
The MIC includes a 90-day limited warranty. For extended hardware replacement and software updates, purchase Cisco SMARTnet Service.
Distance depends on the SFP: up to 2 km with multimode, 10 km with single-mode, and 40–80 km with DWDM OC48 optics.
Use Cisco IOS commands ‘show platform hardware slot 3 state’ and ‘show interface pos’ to view port counters, alarms, and overall module health.
Yes. When installed in a chassis with dual power supplies and redundant fans, the MIC benefits from full power and cooling redundancy.
