20 Gbps nonblocking switching capacity serves the Gigabit interfaces, with line-rate forwarding across all ports and packet sizes. 240W is the maximum PoE allocation; full-budget operation requires an enclosure ambient temperature no higher than 55°C and a suitable external power source. 40W chassis consumption excludes PoE output, so the source must cover both loads. When adding switching inside an industrial enclosure, reserve 50.8 mm clearance above, below, beside, and in front of the chassis. Hazardous-location installations impose additional enclosure requirements, including IP54 protection. Before the PO, confirm the enclosure rating, internal clearances, grounding arrangement, and installation environment.
When preparing a replacement spare for an existing installation, account for the removable SD storage used for software and configuration. SD-IE-1GB= is the spare 1 GB card. Specify the card requirement and the configuration restoration procedure before releasing the replacement hardware purchase order.
When staging switches before installation, choose between the RJ-45 console connection and USB mini-Type B access. The USB console takes priority when both console connections are present. Confirm the workstation connection, required cable, and any USB driver preparation before specifying the staging accessories on the PO.
Dynamic routing without additional licensing
LAN Base provides static IPv4 routing rather than OSPF or EIGRP. Dynamic-routing requirements need IP Services entitlement; the delivered LAN Base configuration does not meet them.
10G connections to the upstream network
The fixed uplinks operate at Gigabit speed, and the chassis has no removable uplink card bay. Installing a different optic does not provide 10G connectivity.

Cisco support ends July 31, 2029. IE-3500-8P3S-E is the migration model, but its base configuration has eight PoE+ downlinks rather than sixteen copper access ports.

The complete -E model ships with LAN Base software, so the order should retain the full part number.
Industrial Ethernet 4000 management includes Web Device Manager, Cisco IOS CLI through console, SSH or Telnet, SNMP, Cisco Network Assistant, Industrial Network Director, and Cisco Catalyst Center. CIP tools and PROFINET tools such as STEP 7 also provide industrial management paths. Specify the administration method and associated license requirements before ordering.
