Fanless Access Connectivity for Small Business Networks

SF250-48-K9 brings fanless, Layer 2+ smart-managed switching to 48 Fast Ethernet access ports without endpoint PoE. Four fixed Gigabit uplinks comprise two dedicated SFP slots and two copper/SFP combo connections, with either medium active on each combo connection. The full-width 1U rack-mount chassis accommodates small-business desktops, printers, and other locally powered network devices. The Cisco 250 Series Smart Switches family combines a built-in browser interface with configurable VLAN separation for business access networks. Voice VLAN handling assigns phone traffic to a dedicated VLAN, while QoS applies traffic priorities at the access edge. The discontinued SF250-48HP-K9-NA counterpart adds PoE+ for cable-powered endpoints. This 48-port 10/100 smart switch retains Fast Ethernet endpoint connectivity rather than upgrading those connections to Gigabit access.

Technical Details

17.6 Gbps switching capacity provides nonblocking forwarding across the installed access and uplink connections. 13.1 Mpps forwarding handles 64-byte packets at wire speed. Static IPv4 routing supports 32 routes, so inter-VLAN designs must fit that routing scale rather than depend on dynamic route exchange. SF250-48-K9 uses 512 MB of DRAM and 256 MB of flash for its embedded software and configuration storage. A shared 24 Mb packet buffer allocates space across ports rather than assigning an independent buffer to every interface. STP/RSTP/MSTP controls Layer 2 loops, and LACP supports aggregated links between compatible devices. Network monitoring is available through SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3, with a full scriptable CLI accessible over SSH or Telnet for configuration work. 24.2W maximum consumption at 220V sets the equipment power allowance; the internal universal AC input accepts 100–240V. Operation from 0°C to 50°C defines the ambient-temperature range for cabinet placement.

Ordering

SF250-48-K9 is available new sealed or certified refurbished; specify condition, quantity, and the regional power cord on the PO. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for POST, rated-speed links on every port, clean boot, and optics bay recognition, with firmware verified and configurations wiped to factory default. ORM warranties cover new units for up to 3 years extended and refurbished units for up to 1 year, with 30-day returns in every condition, terms apply; Cisco's limited lifetime hardware coverage ends July 31, 2027, with power supply coverage limited to 1 year. ORM accepts POs, offers government Net-30, and supports volume orders through UK, EU, US, and MEA stock and RMA with advance replacement.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Follow the replacement chain

Successor purchases follow C1200-48T-4G beyond the discontinued CBS250-48T-4G-NA replacement. SF250-48-K9 reached end of sale July 30, 2022, so a replacement order must distinguish the current model from the intermediate discontinued generation.

Fiber type determines optics

Fiber uplinks on SF250-48-K9 need separately ordered MGBSX1 for multimode or MGBLX1 for single-mode connections. Fiber type and reach must match the selected transceiver before an uplink is added to the PO.

Best For

Segmented Workgroup Access

When separate workgroups need traffic between VLANs, the switch supports up to 16 IP interfaces and 255 active VLANs. Interface allocation, rather than VLAN count alone, becomes a purchase constraint for a segmented small-business network. Specify the required gateway interfaces and verify the addressing plan before the PO.

Replacement Unit Staging

When a replacement unit must be staged before entering a retained network, port mirroring can copy traffic from four source ports to one destination port for packet analysis. The staging purchase should include the receiving analyzer connection and the intended capture layout. Confirm source-port selection before approving the order.

Multi-Site Configuration Standardization

When several small-business locations need a common configuration, text-editable configuration files and secure SCP downloads provide a repeatable staging method. Dual software images allow a second image to remain available during firmware work. Specify the shared configuration file, software version, and local addressing differences before ordering units for the rollout.

Not Suitable If

Gigabit access to endpoints

SF250-48-K9 limits access ports to 10/100 Mbps. C1200-48T-4G provides 48 Gigabit access ports and four 1G SFP uplinks for a same-density replacement.

Power delivery over endpoint cabling

SF250-48-K9 supplies no PoE to endpoints. C1200-48P-4G provides 48 Gigabit PoE access ports and four 1G SFP uplinks, changing both endpoint power and access speed.

10G upstream network connections

SF250-48-K9 has only 1G uplinks. C1200-48T-4X provides four 10G SFP+ uplinks with 48 Gigabit access ports, so the replacement also changes endpoint speed.

Questions & Answers

What does the SF250-48-K9 part number identify?

SF250-48-K9 is the 250 Series Fast Ethernet switch with 48 non-PoE access ports. SF250 identifies the series and port class, while 48 identifies access-port count; K9 remains part of the ordering identifier. The North American variant is SF250-48-K9-NA, which should be specified for a United States order.

How is SF250-48-K9 managed?

SF250-48-K9 is managed through an HTTP/HTTPS web interface, full or menu-based CLI over SSH or Telnet, and SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3. Network-level options include Smart Network Application, FindIT Network Manager, embedded FindIT Network Probe, FindIT Network Discovery Utility, and Cisco Active Advisor. Cisco Network Plug and Play supports automated provisioning.

Is SF250-48-K9 discontinued?

SF250-48-K9 is discontinued: the North American variant reached end of sale on July 30, 2022, and Cisco support ends July 31, 2027. Software maintenance ended July 30, 2023. Purchases for an existing installation therefore require a planned support horizon rather than an assumption of continuing software updates.

What condition and warranty options does ORM offer for SF250-48-K9?

SF250-48-K9 is offered new sealed or certified refurbished, with ORM warranties of up to 3 years extended for new units and up to 1 year refurbished. Returns are available for 30 days in either condition; terms apply. Cisco's original limited lifetime hardware warranty ends July 31, 2027. Power supply coverage is limited to 1 year.

How many uplinks can SF250-48-K9 use at once?

SF250-48-K9 can use four Gigabit uplinks simultaneously: two dedicated SFP links and two copper/SFP combo links. Each combo link activates either its RJ-45 connector or its SFP slot, not both. Copper and fiber selections therefore change the media, not the available number of uplink connections.

Which optics work with Cisco 250 Series Gigabit uplinks?

Cisco 250 Series Gigabit uplinks support MGBSX1 for multimode fiber and MGBLX1 for single-mode fiber. MGBSX1 supports 500 m; MGBLX1 supports 10 km. MGBT1 provides a 1G copper SFP option over Category 5e cabling to 100 m. Match the selected MGBSX1, MGBLX1, or MGBT1 to the installed media and distance.

Can SF250-48-K9 route traffic between VLANs?

Yes, SF250-48-K9 routes IPv4 traffic between VLANs using static routing, with up to 32 static routes and 16 IP interfaces. The switch provides Layer 2+ functionality rather than dynamic route exchange. Gateway-interface allocation and the required route list must remain within those limits when specifying the network configuration.

Is Cisco SF250-48 rack-mountable?

Cisco SF250-48 is rack-mountable as a 1U switch, with a 440 mm width, 44 mm height, and 257 mm depth. The unit weighs 3.57 kg. A mounting kit is included, so rack planning should account for chassis depth and power-cord clearance before the installation is scheduled.

What power supply does SF250-48-K9 require?

SF250-48-K9 uses an internal universal AC supply accepting 100–240V, with worst-case consumption of 23.4W at 110V or 24.2W at 220V. The power cord is included. No external adapter is needed, and the fixed supply is not a redundant internal power arrangement; specify the regional cord for the installation.

What is the difference between SF250-48-K9 and SF250-48HP-K9-NA?

SF250-48HP-K9-NA supplies PoE+ across 48 access ports with a shared 195W budget; SF250-48-K9 supplies no endpoint power. Both are discontinued. The PoE+ counterpart fits retained installations needing cable-fed endpoint power, while SF250-48-K9 fits legacy endpoints with their own power supplies and no requirement for power delivery over Ethernet.

What is the difference between SF250-48-K9 and SF250-24-K9-NA?

SF250-48-K9 has 48 Fast Ethernet access ports, compared with 24 on SF250-24-K9-NA; both models are discontinued. Each provides four Gigabit uplinks, including two combo connections. SF250-48-K9 suits denser retained endpoint layouts, while SF250-24-K9-NA suits smaller legacy installations that do not need the additional access ports.

What is the difference between SF250-48-K9 and C1200-48T-4G?

C1200-48T-4G has 48 Gigabit access ports, while SF250-48-K9 has 48 Fast Ethernet access ports. C1200-48T-4G follows the discontinued CBS250-48T-4G-NA in the replacement chain. The former suits a Gigabit refresh; SF250-48-K9 remains a legacy-fit choice when preserving existing 10/100 endpoint connections rather than increasing endpoint link speed.
