WS-C4948-S identifies the Catalyst 4948 configuration with IP Base software, one AC power supply and a fan tray. The WS-C4948 portion identifies the hardware model; the -S suffix selects this supplied configuration. The included power supply is PWR-C49-300AC, and the hardware provides Gigabit copper connections with alternative SFP paths.
WS-C4948-S supports console CLI access, SSH, Telnet, SNMP, CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution, web-based CiscoWorks CiscoView and Cisco Network Assistant. Local out-of-band access uses the console connection, including terminal or modem access. A separate image-management connection supports TFTP recovery and is not an additional endpoint-facing switch port.
WS-C4948-S is no longer supported by Cisco: end of sale was August 1, 2013, and the last date of support was July 31, 2018. The named WS-C4948E-S and WS-C4948E-F-S replacements are also discontinued. Later migration families include Catalyst 9300 and Catalyst 9500.

Using all four fiber paths leaves 44 copper connections available. Specify GLC-SX-MM= or GLC-LH-SM= optics separately when the purchase requires supported fiber connections.
WS-C4948-S supports optional internal power redundancy but includes only one PWR-C49-300AC supply. PWR-C49-300AC/2 is the redundant AC supply option. The chassis can operate with one supply, and two installed supplies share the load. Separate electrical circuits are required for the intended A-to-B power-feed arrangement.
The Catalyst 4948 supports GLC-SX-MM=, GLC-LH-SM= and GLC-ZX-SM= among its Gigabit fiber optic options. These transceivers occupy the fixed SFP connections and do not add removable uplink cards. Select the optic for the required fiber connection, connector and compatible far-end interface before placing the order.
The Catalyst 4948 does not provide full EIGRP or OSPF with IP Base; its included routing functions are static routing, RIPv1, RIPv2 and EIGRP Stub. Enhanced routing belongs to the Enterprise Services image. An order for the IP Base configuration must not assume those enhanced protocols are included.
The Catalyst 4948 is a one-rack-unit switch for rack-optimized server switching. C4948-ACC-KIT= is the spare rack-mount and cable-guide kit, while C4948-BKT-KIT= provides front and rear mounting brackets. Specify the required mounting accessories explicitly, especially when matching a replacement unit to an existing rack installation.
