Fanless Connectivity for Small-Business Access Networks

SF220-48-K9 is a fanless, Layer 2 smart-managed switch with 48 10/100 Ethernet access ports and two fixed Gigabit combo uplinks. Each uplink accepts either an RJ-45 connection or an SFP transceiver, with only one side active at a time. This non-PoE, 1U rack-mount member of the Cisco 220 Series Smart Switches connects independently powered desktops, printers and other wired endpoints in small-business networks. The Cisco SF220-48 serves access installations that retain Fast Ethernet rather than requiring Gigabit at every desk. Its discontinued SF220-48P-K9-NA sibling adds PoE+ for powered endpoints. The combination of copper and fiber uplink connections accommodates different distribution cabling, but inter-VLAN communication still requires an external routing device.

Technical Details

13.6 Gbps switching capacity accommodates traffic across the access and uplink interfaces, while 10.12 Mpps forwarding describes processing of 64-byte packets. A shared 12 Mb packet buffer holds queued traffic across the interfaces rather than reserving that amount for each port. SF220-48-K9 carries 128 MB of DRAM and 32 MB of flash for its embedded switching software. An 8192-entry MAC table limits learned destinations, and 256 simultaneous VLANs define the segmentation ceiling. STP, RSTP and MSTP provide loop-control options, while LACP supports grouped Ethernet connections. Administrators can use the browser-based interface, a scriptable CLI over SSH or Telnet, SNMP, or Cisco FindIT Network Manager. Security controls include RADIUS and TACACS+ authentication, port security and ACLs with 512 rules. IPv6 host operation supports management without making the device an IPv6 router. Published consumption reaches 13.7W at 220V, providing an electrical-demand figure for circuit and UPS planning.

Ordering

SF220-48-K9 is offered new sealed or certified refurbished; specify condition, regional version, quantity and optics on the PO. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested, including optics bay recognition, with firmware verified and configuration wiped to factory default. ORM's warranty is up to 3-year extended for new units or up to 1 year for certified refurbished units, with 30-day returns on every condition, terms apply; Cisco's separate Limited Lifetime hardware coverage ends July 31, 2027. For enterprise and volume purchases, POs are accepted, government buyers receive Net-30, and RMA includes advance replacement across UK, EU, US and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Software maintenance has ended

SF220-48-K9 deployments need a validated firmware baseline because software maintenance releases ended July 30, 2023; allow for migration rather than expecting new bug-fix releases.

Fiber uplink purchasing requirements

Fiber connections require separately ordered MGBSX1 or MGBLX1 transceivers; the original switch package includes a power cord, mounting kit and console cable, but no optical transceivers.

Best For

Multi-Site Configuration Standardization

When several sites need the same approved configuration, the Cisco 220 Series accepts text-editable configuration files that can be downloaded to another switch. CLI privilege levels 1 and 15 support controlled administration. Establish the configuration template, local address changes and administrator access requirements before releasing the multi-site PO.

Predeployment Firmware Staging

When a rollout includes firmware qualification before installation, two stored software images and dual configuration files allow a candidate image and an approved baseline to be retained. A mirror configuration backs up the latest stable configuration. Specify the required firmware baseline and staging acceptance checks before ordering the rollout quantity.

Branch Telephone Rollout

When a branch adds IP phones alongside existing data endpoints, automatic voice VLAN assignment and eight hardware queues per port provide voice classification and scheduling controls. Define the telephone traffic classes, queue scheduling policy and administrative handover, then specify the required voice VLAN and QoS configuration before the PO.

Not Suitable If

Gigabit connectivity on every access port

SF220-48-K9 access ports stop at 100 Mbps; CBS220-48T-4G-NA provides 48 Gigabit access ports and is the current replacement for this discontinued model.

Power delivery to connected endpoints

SF220-48-K9 supplies no PoE; phones, cameras and access points need independent power. CBS220-48P-4G-NA provides PoE across 48 Gigabit access ports.

10G uplinks to distribution

SF220-48-K9 uplinks stop at 1G. CBS220-48T-4X provides four 10G SFP+ uplinks and also changes the access ports from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit.

Questions & Answers

What does the SF220-48-K9 part number identify?

SF220-48-K9 identifies the SF220-48 Fast Ethernet model in the Cisco 220 Series, with 48 non-PoE access ports and two Gigabit combo uplinks. Regional ordering forms include SF220-48-K9-NA for North America, SF220-48-K9-EU for listed European markets and SF220-48-K9-UK for the United Kingdom.

How is SF220-48-K9 managed?

SF220-48-K9 can be managed through its HTTP/HTTPS web interface, CLI over SSH or Telnet, and SNMP versions 1, 2c and 3. Local console access and Cisco FindIT Network Manager provide additional administration paths. The scriptable CLI supports automated configuration, while the browser interface handles configuration, maintenance, monitoring and its system dashboard.

Which uplinks and optics does SF220-48-K9 support?

SF220-48-K9 has two Gigabit combo uplinks, each sharing one RJ-45 connector with one SFP slot; only one connector in each pair operates at a time. MGBSX1 supports multimode fiber and MGBLX1 supports single-mode fiber. Specify the transceiver and matching link media separately rather than counting four independent uplinks.

Can SF220-48-K9 route traffic between VLANs?

No, SF220-48-K9 provides Layer 2 switching rather than inter-VLAN routing. VLAN segmentation and IPv6 host support do not turn the switch into a router. Traffic between VLANs therefore requires a separate routing device; include that requirement when sizing the rest of the network.

Is the Cisco SF220-48 suitable for rack mounting?

Yes, the Cisco SF220-48 uses a 1U rack-mount chassis measuring 440 mm wide, 44 mm high and 201 mm deep, with a weight of 2.98 kg. A mounting kit is included in the original package. Preserve ventilation clearance even though the switch uses fanless cooling.

What power supply and electrical input does SF220-48-K9 require?

SF220-48-K9 uses an internal AC supply with a 100-240V input range and no redundant supply option. Consumption is 13.2W at 110V or 13.7W at 220V. The switch does not deliver endpoint power, so phones or other powered devices need their own power arrangements.

What is the lifecycle status of SF220-48-K9?

SF220-48-K9 is discontinued: end of sale was July 30, 2022, software maintenance ended July 30, 2023, and Cisco's last date of support is July 31, 2027. The final date applies to eligible service and support. Plan continued operation and migration around that remaining support period.

What condition and warranty options does ORM offer for SF220-48-K9?

SF220-48-K9 is offered new sealed or certified refurbished, with ORM warranties of up to 3-year extended for new units and up to 1 year for refurbished units. Every condition has 30-day returns, terms apply. Cisco's original Limited Lifetime hardware warranty is separate and ends July 31, 2027.

What is the difference between SF220-48-K9 and SF220-48P-K9-NA?

SF220-48P-K9-NA provides PoE+ with a shared 375W budget, while SF220-48-K9 does not supply PoE. Both models have 48 Fast Ethernet access ports. Both are discontinued: the non-PoE model fits independently powered endpoints, while the PoE+ sibling is relevant when matching an installed powered-endpoint configuration.

What is the difference between SF220-48-K9 and SF220-24-K9-NA?

SF220-48-K9 has 48 Fast Ethernet access ports, while SF220-24-K9-NA has 24. Both discontinued models retain two Gigabit combo uplinks. The 48-port model suits a larger existing connection count; the 24-port sibling fits smaller legacy installations where an exact family match matters more than adding unused access ports.

What is the difference between SF220-48-K9 and CBS220-48T-4G-NA?

CBS220-48T-4G-NA provides 48 Gigabit access ports instead of the 48 Fast Ethernet access ports on SF220-48-K9. The discontinued SF220 model serves existing 10/100 installations; its current replacement serves buyers moving every access connection to Gigabit. Confirm the regional ordering form when moving from the older hardware.

How many VLANs can the Cisco 220 Series support?

The Cisco 220 Series supports 256 simultaneous VLANs, including port-based, tagged, management and guest VLAN use. The same switch also supports automatic voice VLAN assignment for telephone traffic. Keep the VLAN design within that simultaneous limit; the number of access ports does not expand the available segmentation count.
