Stackable Powered Access for Enterprise Wiring Closets

WS-C3750E-48PD-S is an enterprise stackable Layer 3 access switch with 48 Gigabit Ethernet PoE ports and two fixed 10G X2 uplink interfaces. The 1U rack-mount chassis belongs to the Cisco Catalyst 3750-E Series and ships with the IP Base feature set for basic routed access alongside switching, security and quality-of-service controls. The uplinks use X2 transceivers rather than native SFP+ cages. This configuration connects wired clients and compatible powered phones or wireless access points in a wiring closet. The discontinued WS-C3750E-48TD-S is the non-PoE sibling for endpoints that receive power separately. A dedicated Ethernet management connection and an RS-232 console provide administration paths apart from ordinary client connections.

Technical Details

160 Gbps switching capacity provides the switching-fabric reference for the access and uplink interfaces. 101.2 Mpps forwarding handles 64-byte packets on this configuration. 420W of shared PoE power requires allocation across connected endpoints rather than maximum draw on every port. Static, RIPv1, RIPv2, RIPng and EIGRP Stub support basic routing; OSPF, BGPv4 and full EIGRP require IP Services. WS-C3750E-48PD-S runs Cisco IOS with 256 MB DRAM and 64 MB flash for runtime operation and software storage. The routing template permits 11000 total unicast routes, while the VLAN template permits 12000 MAC entries; these maxima belong to different resource allocations. 540W measured consumption at full throughput with maximum tested PoE loading provides a loaded electrical-planning reference, distinct from the 750W rating of C3K-PWR-750WAC. StackWise Plus stacks nine members with 64 Gbps stack bandwidth. The C3K-BLWR-60CFM= fan tray provides active cooling; the chassis is not fanless.

Ordering

Order WS-C3750E-48PD-S in new sealed or certified refurbished condition, and specify quantity and included accessories on the PO. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested, with PoE output verified under load on every powered port. ORM Systems provides up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units and up to 1 year on certified refurbished units, with 30-day returns on every condition (terms apply); Cisco's original 90-day limited hardware and software warranty and service coverage ended January 31, 2018. Volume orders accept POs, Net-30 for government and RMA with advance replacement, with regional stock and RMA support in the UK, EU, US and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Used equipment license entitlement

Catalyst 3750-E used-equipment purchases need license entitlement specified separately: LL-3750E-IPB= is the IP Base relicensing option, while LL-3750E-IPS= covers IP Services. An installed image does not establish the entitlement supplied with an order.

Legacy replacement chain planning

WS-C3750E-48PD-S requires legacy-equipment planning: sales ended January 30, 2013. The direct replacement WS-C3750X-48P-S is also discontinued; the forward replacement chain ends at C9300-48P-A.

Specify the optical connection

WS-C3750E-48PD-S fiber connections require an optical choice on the PO: X2-10GB-SR= supports 10GBASE-SR, while X2-10GB-LR= supports 10GBASE-LR. CVR-X2-SFP= instead accepts Gigabit SFP optics; specify the matching fiber termination.

Refurbished configuration starts clean

Certified refurbished managed units arrive with verified firmware and configurations wiped to factory default, so retain the intended configuration for staging. Inspection and bench testing precede shipment; supply configuration requirements with the PO.

Best For

Existing Stack Expansion

When an existing wiring closet needs another stack member, Catalyst 3750-E can join Catalyst 3750 switches rather than operating only as a standalone unit. Cable choices include CAB-STACK-50CM=, CAB-STACK-1M= and CAB-STACK-3M=. Record the existing members, software image and physical cable reach before specifying the stack connection on the PO.

Enhanced Endpoint Power

When replacing phones or wireless access points that need more than standard PoE power, Cisco Enhanced PoE permits 20W per port through supported power negotiation. That capability is not standard PoE+. Record each endpoint's required draw and negotiation compatibility, then specify the power allocation before issuing the PO.

Configuration Reproduction Lab

When a lab must reproduce an existing campus configuration, the platform supports 1005 VLANs and 1000 switched virtual interfaces. Resource allocation changes with the selected Switching Database Manager template, so configuration size alone is not enough. Specify the intended template and retain the configuration requirements with the staging PO.

Not Suitable If

Active Cisco service coverage

WS-C3750E-48PD-S reached its last date of support on January 31, 2018. C9300-48P-A is the current replacement-chain endpoint; the intermediate Catalyst 3750-X and Catalyst 3850 models are discontinued.

Standard PoE+ power for endpoints

WS-C3750E-48PD-S supplies PoE with Cisco Enhanced PoE up to 20W per port, not standard PoE+. C9300-48P-A provides 48 PoE+ ports with Network Advantage.

OSPF or BGPv4 without upgrading

WS-C3750E-48PD-S ships with IP Base, which excludes OSPF and BGPv4. IP Services is required for those protocols; the supplied feature set cannot provide that advanced dynamic routing.

Questions & Answers

What does the WS-C3750E-48PD-S part number mean?

WS-C3750E-48PD-S identifies a Catalyst 3750-E configuration: WS-C3750E is the family prefix, 48 is the access-port count, P indicates PoE, D corresponds to two X2-based 10G uplinks, and S identifies IP Base. This configuration includes C3K-PWR-750WAC rather than the higher-power supply supplied with the SF variant.

How is WS-C3750E-48PD-S managed?

WS-C3750E-48PD-S is managed through the Cisco IOS CLI using console, Telnet or SSH, plus SNMP, Cisco Network Assistant and CiscoWorks LMS. SSH and encrypted SNMPv3 require a cryptographic software image. A dedicated Ethernet management port provides an out-of-band connection for administration.

Is WS-C3750E-48PD-S still supported by Cisco?

No, WS-C3750E-48PD-S passed Cisco's last date of support on January 31, 2018; its end-of-sale date was January 30, 2013. The direct replacement WS-C3750X-48P-S is discontinued, as is the subsequent WS-C3850-48P-S. The current forward replacement chain ends at C9300-48P-A rather than either intermediate model.

Which conditions and warranties does ORM Systems offer for WS-C3750E-48PD-S?

ORM Systems offers WS-C3750E-48PD-S new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for refurbished units. Both conditions have 30-day returns; terms apply. Cisco's original 90-day limited hardware and software warranty and service coverage ended January 31, 2018.

Which software licensing options apply to WS-C3750E-48PD-S?

WS-C3750E-48PD-S includes IP Base and can upgrade to IP Services using 3750E48-IPSLCB-QTY. Software activation uses a license file to enable the authorized feature set. Used-equipment relicensing options are LL-3750E-IPB= for IP Base and LL-3750E-IPS= for IP Services; specify entitlement separately from the installed software image.

How much PoE power does WS-C3750E-48PD-S provide?

WS-C3750E-48PD-S has a shared 420W PoE budget with C3K-PWR-750WAC, insufficient for 15.4W on all 48 ports simultaneously. Cisco Enhanced PoE supports 20W per port with compatible power negotiation. Size the sum of endpoint loads against the available budget; a higher per-port capability does not increase total available power.

Which uplink optics can WS-C3750E-48PD-S use?

WS-C3750E-48PD-S has two fixed 10G X2 uplink interfaces accepting optics such as X2-10GB-SR= and X2-10GB-LR=. The CVR-X2-SFP= TwinGig converter changes each X2 interface into two Gigabit SFP ports. Specify the operating speed, optical connection and matching fiber termination rather than assuming native SFP+ compatibility.

How many switches can the Catalyst 3750-E stack?

StackWise Plus stacks nine Catalyst 3750-E members with 64 Gbps stack bandwidth and single-IP management. Catalyst 3750 switches can also participate in a mixed stack. Cable options include CAB-STACK-50CM=, CAB-STACK-1M= and CAB-STACK-3M=; identify existing members and cable reach when specifying an extension.

Can the Catalyst 3750-E use redundant power supplies?

The Catalyst 3750-E supports external power backup, not two internal redundant supplies, because the chassis has one internal power-supply slot. WS-C3750E-48PD-S ships with C3K-PWR-750WAC. The external backup connection accepts PWR2300-AC-RPS-N1=; a second internal supply cannot be added to create a dual-bay configuration.

Which routing protocols does WS-C3750E-48PD-S support as shipped?

WS-C3750E-48PD-S supports Static, RIPv1, RIPv2, RIPng, EIGRP Stub and HSRP under IP Base. OSPF, full EIGRP, BGPv4 and IS-ISv4 require IP Services. The routing template supports 11000 total unicast routes, divided into 3000 directly connected hosts and 8000 indirect routes; these resource limits remain distinct from software entitlement.

What is the difference between WS-C3750E-48PD-S and WS-C3750E-48TD-S?

WS-C3750E-48PD-S powers connected endpoints through PoE, whereas WS-C3750E-48TD-S is non-PoE. Both models are discontinued members of the Catalyst 3750-E family. For legacy-equipment matching, the PD configuration suits powered phones or access points; the TD configuration suits endpoints whose electrical power comes from another source.

What is the difference between WS-C3750E-48PD-S and WS-C3750E-48PD-E?

WS-C3750E-48PD-S ships with IP Base, while WS-C3750E-48PD-E ships with IP Services, enabling advanced routing such as OSPF and BGPv4. Both models are discontinued. The S configuration suits legacy basic routed access; the E configuration suits maintaining an existing deployment that requires the advanced routing entitlement.

What is the difference between WS-C3750E-48PD-S and C9300-48P-A?

WS-C3750E-48PD-S has exhausted Cisco hardware support, whereas C9300-48P-A is the current forward-chain replacement. The migration passes through the discontinued WS-C3750X-48P-S and WS-C3850-48P-S. The older model suits matching legacy spares; C9300-48P-A suits a replacement purchase intended to move beyond the retired hardware generations.
