WS-CE500-24PC provides 24 Fast Ethernet PoE access ports and two fixed Gigabit combo uplinks in a Layer 2, rack-mount switch. Each uplink uses either its copper connection or its shared SFP slot, rather than operating both connections simultaneously. The Catalyst Express 500 serves small-business networks connecting desktops, IP phones, wireless access points and cameras. Its access connections remain limited to 10/100 Mbps; Gigabit connectivity is reserved for the uplink connections. The discontinued WS-CE500-24LC differs by powering only four access ports. This 24-port PoE configuration addresses installations that need powered connections throughout the access block while retaining copper or fiber connectivity to another switch or a server.

8.8 Gbps switching capacity and 6.6 Mpps forwarding support traffic across the access and uplink interfaces. 370W of PoE capacity supplies compatible powered endpoints, while the 460W maximum consumption must be included when sizing electrical capacity. WS-CE500-24PC carries 32 MB of DRAM and supports 8000 learned MAC addresses. Browser-based Device Manager and Cisco Network Assistant provide graphical administration rather than a conventional switch CLI. VLAN separation does not provide inter-VLAN routing; traffic between subnets requires an external router. For link aggregation, LACP and static EtherChannels are supported, with six EtherChannels available and matching speed, duplex and port characteristics required within each group. Local SPAN supports traffic inspection, but Remote SPAN is unavailable. The Cisco Catalyst Express family uses separate switching and routing equipment when a deployment needs communication between VLANs.
Specify new sealed or certified refurbished WS-CE500-24PC units on the purchase order, including quantity and required optics by part number. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested, including PoE output verified under load on every powered port, then firmware verified and wiped to factory default. ORM's warranty is up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for certified refurbished units; both conditions have 30-day returns, terms apply, while Cisco's original limited lifetime hardware warranty ended December 18, 2014. Enterprise and volume orders can use purchase orders, government Net-30 and RMA with advance replacement, with regional stock and RMA coverage across the UK, EU, US and MEA.

When replacing connections for existing phones or wireless access points, distinguish switch-side power allocation from each endpoint's requirements. Individual powered connections support 15.4W using IEEE 802.3af, with Cisco prestandard inline power also supported. Confirm each endpoint's power standard and maximum requirement before specifying the powered-device schedule.
When standardizing configurations across existing offices, Smartports roles provide predefined settings for device types rather than requiring identical manual port configuration. Voice and guest assignments require the case-sensitive Cisco-Voice and Cisco-Guest VLAN names. Include the intended endpoint roles and required VLAN names in the configuration instructions before the purchase order.
When preparing replacement hardware before installation, initial setup requires a directly connected computer configured to obtain its address through DHCP. The SETUP indication identifies the connection used for browser configuration. Reserve an isolated staging connection and record the intended management address before ordering the replacement units for site shipment.
Gigabit connections for access endpoints
Access ports stop at 100 Mbps; Gigabit connectivity is confined to the combo uplinks. Endpoints requiring dedicated 1Gbps access connections need different switching hardware.
Powered devices requiring more than 15.4W
Each powered port supplies a maximum of 15.4W. Devices requiring greater switch-side power need another power source or switching hardware with a higher per-port allowance.
Inter-VLAN routing inside the switch
Layer 2 switching does not route traffic between VLANs. Use an external router supporting VLAN trunking when separate subnets must communicate through this access switch.

WS-CE500-24PC identifies a Catalyst Express 500 switch with 24 10/100 PoE ports and two Gigabit copper-or-SFP uplinks. WS-CE500 identifies the switch family, while 24PC identifies this powered access configuration. The uplinks are dual-purpose connections, so each copper interface shares its connection with an SFP slot.
The Catalyst Express 500 is managed through its embedded browser-based Device Manager or Cisco Network Assistant. These graphical tools provide configuration and monitoring, with Network Assistant exposing additional functions. Administration uses the switch's management IP address; the family uses graphical management rather than a conventional console-based switch CLI.
WS-CE500-24PC is discontinued, and Cisco support has ended. The Catalyst Express 500 reached end of sale on December 17, 2009, followed by the end of support on December 18, 2014. A remaining hardware unit does not restore Cisco service eligibility or extend those lifecycle dates.
ORM offers new sealed WS-CE500-24PC units with up to a 3-year extended warranty and certified refurbished units with up to 1 year. Both conditions have 30-day returns, terms apply. Cisco's original limited lifetime hardware warranty and service coverage ended December 18, 2014.
WS-CE500-24PC provides a 370W PoE budget, with a maximum of 15.4W on each powered port. All 24 access ports support IEEE 802.3af and Cisco prestandard inline power. The budget accommodates 24 connections at the stated per-port maximum; endpoints requiring more power need another power arrangement.
WS-CE500-24PC supports GLC-SX-MM= and GLC-LH-SM= Gigabit SFP transceivers for its fiber uplinks. Each SFP slot shares a connection with a copper Gigabit port, so installing fiber does not add another independent uplink. Match the transceiver to the installed fiber and the remote interface when specifying the connection.
The Catalyst Express 500 cannot perform inter-VLAN routing internally; an external router must handle communication between VLANs. The switch supports 32 VLANs, including the default VLAN. A router-facing connection can carry VLAN-tagged traffic, with the router providing the required interfaces and routing between the separate subnets.
WS-CE500-24PC powers 24 access ports, whereas WS-CE500-24LC powers four access ports. Both retain 24 Fast Ethernet access connections overall. Both models are discontinued; within an existing installation, the former configuration covers a fully powered access block, while the latter covers a smaller number of powered endpoints.
WS-CE500-24PC supports an external redundant power system, whereas WS-CE500-24TT does not. External backup does not give WS-CE500-24PC a second internal power supply. Both models are discontinued; the former addresses an existing installation requiring that backup connection, while the latter has no external redundant-power option.
WS-CE500-24PC has 10/100 Mbps access connections, whereas WS-CE500G-12TC provides Gigabit Ethernet connections. Both models are discontinued. For matching existing hardware, the former serves Fast Ethernet endpoint connections; the latter addresses connections requiring Gigabit speed rather than restricting Gigabit connectivity to the uplinks.
