DS-C9250I-K9 combines 20 enabled 16G Fibre Channel ports, eight 10G FCoE ports and two fixed 1/10G IP storage services ports in a multiservice SAN switch. The fixed configuration connects native Fibre Channel storage fabrics with Ethernet-based storage services rather than providing copper endpoint access. The Cisco MDS 9250i Multiservice Fabric Switch belongs to the MDS 9200 family and occupies two rack units. Its storage interfaces support departmental fabrics, remote SAN connectivity and connections into larger storage networks. The discontinued DS-C9250ID16GSFPK9 bundle included twenty 16G Fibre Channel transceivers, distinguishing that package from the base configuration.

64 buffer-to-buffer credits per shared-mode Fibre Channel port support credit-controlled storage traffic; dedicated-mode allocation can reach 253 credits on an individual port. PortChannel groups can contain 16 physical links, while each IP storage services port supports six FCIP tunnels. Hardware-assisted IPsec protects FCIP and iSCSI traffic, and hardware-enforced zoning separates storage initiators and targets. DS-C9250I-K9 provides VSAN isolation, per-VSAN role-based access control and diagnostics including POST, internal loopbacks and Fibre Channel traceroute. SSHv2 and SNMPv3 provide secure administration paths. An integrated supervisor holds 4 GB of flash for software images, and front-to-back airflow moves cooling air through the chassis.
DS-C9250I-K9 is offered new sealed with up to a 3-year extended ORM warranty or certified refurbished with up to a 1-year ORM warranty; both conditions include 30-day returns, terms apply. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, rated-speed port links, optics bay recognition, PSU status, fan status and clean boot, with firmware verified and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify the condition, installed licenses, transceiver PIDs and power cord PIDs on the purchase order. ORM Systems accepts POs, offers Net-30 for government and RMA with advance replacement, and supports enterprise and volume orders through UK, EU, US and MEA regional stock and RMA.

An existing MDS 9222i installation needing replacement hardware can match DS-C9222I-K9, DS-C9222I-NAK9 or DS-C9222IEVBDL-K9 to this discontinued replacement generation. Those older configurations reached end-of-sale on April 22, 2015. Before the purchase order, identify the existing configuration and confirm the required storage interfaces and installed feature entitlements.
A storage fabric adding connections beyond the enabled base can use the chassis's forty physical Fibre Channel ports, subject to additional port activation. Traditional M9250IP20-16G= and Smart License M9250IP20-16G-SL= identify activation paths. Before the purchase order, confirm installed activation entitlements and specify optics for the additional connections.
A replacement switch entering a controlled staging process needs its installed release checked before production acceptance. Cisco NX-OS 9.4(4) can cause unexpected reloads on affected MDS fabric switches, including this model. Include firmware verification in acceptance planning and establish the approved corrective release before issuing the purchase order.
32G Fibre Channel device connections
Fibre Channel interfaces stop at 16G. The current migration family, MDS 9220i, supports 32G Fibre Channel but has twelve Fibre Channel ports, so connection density also changes.
More than forty Fibre Channel connections
The fixed chassis has forty physical Fibre Channel ports. Additional activation enables existing ports; it does not add interfaces or expand the chassis beyond that physical limit.
Continued Cisco security software maintenance
Vulnerability and security support ended December 18, 2025. MDS 9220i is the migration family; continued hardware service eligibility does not restore security maintenance for MDS 9250i.

DS-C9250I-K9 identifies the MDS 9250i 50-port base configuration, with twenty enabled Fibre Channel ports, eight FCoE ports and two FCIP ports. The 9250I segment corresponds to the MDS 9250i model. The complete part number identifies the base switch rather than a transceiver bundle or spare configuration.
DS-C9250I-K9 is managed through the MDS command-line interface, Cisco Prime DCNM, Cisco Device Manager GUI and integrated third-party storage management tools. Local access uses the RS-232 console, while SSH provides remote CLI access. Scriptable CLI and the DCNM web services API support administrative automation.
DS-C9250I-K9 is discontinued: end-of-sale was December 19, 2023, and the last date of support is December 31, 2028. Software maintenance ended December 18, 2024, and vulnerability support ended December 18, 2025. Existing eligible service contracts have a final renewal date of March 15, 2028.
ORM Systems offers DS-C9250I-K9 new sealed with up to a 3-year extended warranty, or certified refurbished with up to a 1-year warranty. Both conditions have 30-day returns, terms apply. Cisco's original hardware warranty is 1-year limited; eligible Cisco coverage cannot extend beyond December 31, 2028.
MDS 9250i includes SAN Extension over IP and offers optional feature packages plus traditional and Smart License port activation. M9250IP20-16G= identifies traditional activation, while M9250IP20-16G-SL= identifies Smart License activation. Data Mobility Manager has M9250IDMMK9 and six-month M9250IDMMT6M options. Verify installed entitlements separately from hardware condition.
DS-C9250I-K9 replaced DS-C9222I-K9, DS-C9222I-NAK9 and DS-C9222IEVBDL-K9. These MDS 9222i configurations reached end-of-sale on April 22, 2015. DS-C9250I-K9 subsequently reached its own end-of-sale, so the lifecycle chain now continues to MDS 9220i rather than ending at the MDS 9250i generation.
DS-C9250I-K9 enables twenty Fibre Channel ports in its base configuration, although the chassis contains forty physical Fibre Channel ports. Additional activation enables the remaining twenty ports. The physical Fibre Channel interfaces support autosensing storage connections, and activation entitlement must be distinguished from the presence of the port cages.
MDS 9250i supports DS-SFP-FC16G-SW and DS-SFP-FC16G-LW for compatible Fibre Channel connections, plus SFP-10G-SR and SFP-10G-LR for compatible 10G Ethernet interfaces. Transceiver selection depends on the interface and fiber connection. Configured or bundled transceivers ship in the box rather than installed in the switch's port cages.
Yes, DS-C9250I-K9 has three DS-C50I-300AC supplies in its default redundant configuration. With FCoE enabled, three online supplies provide N+1 redundancy and two provide nonredundant operation. Supported software permits redundancy with two online supplies when FCoE ports are administratively down; power-grid redundancy requires additional power-source arrangements.
DS-C9250ID16GSFPK9 bundles twenty 16G Fibre Channel transceivers, while DS-C9250I-K9 identifies the base configuration rather than that optics bundle. Both models reached end-of-sale on December 19, 2023. The base configuration corresponds to individually specified optics; the bundle corresponds to orders requiring those twenty transceivers together.
DS-C9250I-D12S-ENT includes an Enterprise license, while DS-C9250I-K9 requires the optional Enterprise package for those advanced functions. Both configurations are discontinued. The base configuration corresponds to buyers using standard functions or existing entitlements; the Enterprise bundle corresponds to configurations requiring the additional licensed feature set.
DS-C9220I-K9 supports 32G Fibre Channel connections, while DS-C9250I-K9 supports Fibre Channel speeds through 16G. MDS 9220i is the migration family for the discontinued MDS 9250i. The older model corresponds to existing 16G installations; the successor addresses requirements for higher-speed Fibre Channel storage connections.
Yes, MDS 9250i supports Inter-VSAN Routing with the optional Cisco MDS 9000 Enterprise package, M9200ENT1K9. IVR selectively connects initiators and targets across VSAN boundaries while maintaining control-plane isolation. The base hardware configuration does not itself include that optional Enterprise entitlement, so verify licensing before specifying cross-VSAN communication.
