MS425-16-HW identifies the MS425 fiber aggregation hardware with 16 SFP+ data ports. MS425 is the series designation, 16 is the data-port count, and HW identifies the hardware item rather than its separately ordered license. The full configuration includes 10G data interfaces and 40G uplink interfaces.
The MS425 series is configured through the browser-based Meraki dashboard using cloud management. SNMP and SYSLOG provide integration with other monitoring systems, while remote packet capture, ping, and traceroute support troubleshooting. Scheduled firmware upgrades and searchable configuration-change logs are available without requiring a traditional switch configuration CLI.
MS425-16-HW uses separately ordered Enterprise licensing and support, with a minimum one-year term through LIC-MS425-16-1YR. Enterprise terms of three, five, seven, and ten years are also available. The license combines cloud management, software upgrades, and support; the hardware PID is not a perpetual software entitlement.
MS425-16-HW reached end of sale on June 24, 2024, and its end-of-support date is September 28, 2029. Hardware availability through a reseller does not restart that support period. A purchase intended for service beyond the support deadline needs a different hardware lifecycle.
MS425-16-HW is one of the replacement options for the discontinued MS420-24-HW and MS420-48-HW aggregation switches. Both older models reached end of sale on October 31, 2016, and support ended October 31, 2023. Port density changes, so retained fiber connections must be inventoried before a replacement is ordered.

MS425-16-HW has two fixed 40G QSFP+ uplink interfaces in addition to its SFP+ data ports. The QSFP+ interfaces can also be assigned to flexible stacking, so they are not additional dedicated stack connectors. Specify compatible optics or direct-attach cables separately for the required physical links.
The MS425 series supports physical flexible stacking of eight switches using front-panel interfaces. MA-CBL-40G-50CM, MA-CBL-40G-1M, and MA-CBL-40G-3M are the 0.5 m, 1 m, and 3 m 40G cable options. Virtual stacking is separate dashboard-based administration and does not create the same physical forwarding arrangement.
MS425-16-HW supports static routing and OSPF, plus DHCP server, DHCP relay, and Warm Spare using VRRP. OSPF and Warm Spare cannot operate concurrently. A buyer retaining dynamic routing must therefore settle the gateway redundancy design before ordering rather than assuming those functions can be combined.
MS425-16-HW ships with one MA-PWR-250WAC power supply and accepts a second MA-PWR-250WAC for redundancy. The second MA-PWR-250WAC is ordered separately; a redundant pair is not the standard included configuration. Both supply bays support hot-swappable modules, so the PO should state whether the additional MA-PWR-250WAC is required.
MS425-32-HW provides 32 SFP+ data interfaces, while MS425-16-HW provides 16. Both are discontinued MS425 models, so this is a density comparison for existing installations rather than a current-generation recommendation. The smaller model suits fewer aggregation connections; the larger model suits installations that need more data interfaces.
C9300X-24Y-M provides 25G-capable SFP28 data interfaces, whereas the discontinued MS425-16-HW uses 10G SFP+ data interfaces. The replacement also changes the data-port count to 24, so the connection plan is not identical. The older switch suits existing 10G installations; the current replacement suits buyers moving aggregation links to 25G.
MS425-16-HW occupies 1U in a rack and includes rack-mount hardware. Front-to-back airflow determines the required orientation in the cabinet, and the operating range is 0°C to 40°C. Check cabinet clearance, fiber bend radius, and airflow access when specifying the installation hardware and optical connections.
MS425-16-HW consumes 98W at idle and 136W at full load. Those operating figures describe the chassis draw, not the rating of its MA-PWR-250WAC power supply. Use the full-load value for the switch allocation when sizing rack power, while accounting separately for other equipment on the same feed.
