What are Cisco Meraki switches?

Meraki MS switches are cloud-managed access and aggregation switches configured and monitored entirely from the Meraki Dashboard, with no CLI required. They deliver enterprise switching with radically simplified operations.

Do Meraki switches require a license?

Yes. Every Meraki switch needs an active Meraki license (Enterprise or Advanced) to operate. Licenses are sold in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 10-year terms and include Dashboard access, firmware updates, and Cisco support.

What happens if a Meraki license expires?

After a 30-day grace period, an unlicensed Meraki switch stops passing traffic until the license is renewed. Always co-term or renew licenses before expiration to avoid downtime.

What is the difference between Meraki MS and Catalyst switches?

Meraki MS switches are managed purely from the cloud Dashboard, while Catalyst switches traditionally use CLI and Catalyst Center. Meraki prioritizes simplicity and remote management, and many Catalyst 9300 models can now also run in Meraki-managed mode.
