Fanless Access Switching for Branch Office Endpoints

MS120-8LP-HW provides fanless Layer 2 access switching through eight Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ ports and two fixed 1G SFP uplinks in a desktop enclosure. The MS120-8 Compact Switch connects branch-office users and powered endpoints, including access points, phones and cameras. Its uplinks are built in rather than supplied through a removable network card, so the hardware configuration does not depend on choosing an uplink module. The discontinued MS120-8-HW omits endpoint power, distinguishing the non-PoE sibling from this powered version. Integrated mounting brackets support wall or utility-board placement, while included feet support desktop installation. A Kensington security slot provides a physical attachment point where the compact enclosure sits outside a locked equipment cabinet.

MS120-8LP-HW price for new stock is $391.65. MS120-8LP-HW refurb price is $185.85. MS120-8LP-HW is in stock and available for next-day dispatch. (terms applied)

Technical Details

20 Gbps switching capacity provides non-blocking forwarding across the access and uplink interfaces. 14.88 Mpps forwarding handles standard-size packets, while eight QoS queues include six configurable queues for DSCP-to-CoS mapping. MS120-8LP-HW supports STP/RSTP, LACP and IGMP Snooping for loop control, aggregation and multicast filtering. DHCP Relay does not provide inter-VLAN routing. Port security, MAC whitelisting, DHCP snooping, Dynamic ARP Inspection and IPv4/IPv6 ACLs apply access controls. Scheduled firmware upgrades operate through the common Meraki software architecture, with hardware forwarding separated from control and management.

Ordering

ORM Systems supplies MS120-8LP-HW new sealed or certified refurbished; new units carry up to a 3-year extended warranty, certified refurbished units up to 1 year, and every condition includes 30-day returns, terms apply. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, rated-speed links on every port, clean boot, PoE output under load on every powered port and optics bay recognition, with firmware verified and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify the condition and required accessories on the purchase order; Cisco's lifetime hardware warranty remains separate and ends at the product's End-of-Support milestone. POs are accepted, government buyers have Net-30 terms, and enterprise or volume orders are supported with RMA and advance replacement.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Separate Enterprise license required

MS120-8LP-HW needs a separate Enterprise license; include LIC-MS120-8LP-1YR for the one-year option. Hardware and license terms are separate purchase items, including when ordering certified refurbished hardware from ORM.

Shared endpoint power allowance

MS120-8LP-HW requires endpoint power sizing: 8 x 30W = 240W exceeds the shared 67W budget. Order against combined endpoint demand; the included MA-PWR-90WAC adapter does not raise that PoE allowance.

Best For

Distributed Branch Standardization

When branch offices need the same access-port policies, configuration templates let administrators prepare a common configuration and apply it through the cloud. The management workflow uses a web browser rather than local CLI configuration. Specify template ownership, site assignments and management access before the purchase order.

Lab Acceptance Testing

When a staging plan includes nonstandard frame sizes or intermittent cabling faults, the 9578-byte jumbo-frame limit and remote diagnostics define the validation work. Cable tests and per-port packet captures can isolate link and traffic behavior. Specify the expected frame sizes and acceptance tests before ordering staging quantities.

Not Suitable If

10G uplinks to distribution

MS120-8LP-HW has fixed 1G SFP uplinks and no removable uplink card slot. A 10G SFP+ transceiver cannot provide a 10G upgrade.

Physical switch stacking

MS120-8LP-HW supports Virtual Stacking for dashboard administration, not a shared forwarding stack. Requirements for dedicated stacking links need a different switch architecture.

More than 30W per endpoint

MS120-8LP-HW supplies PoE+ rather than PoE++ and limits individual powered ports to 30W. Higher-draw endpoints require a different power-delivery solution.

Questions & Answers

What does each part of MS120-8LP-HW mean?

MS120-8LP-HW identifies an MS120 access switch with eight Gigabit access ports, the LP configuration providing a 67W PoE+ budget, and HW identifying the hardware purchase. The Enterprise license is a separate item rather than a license tier encoded in this hardware PID. Two fixed 1G SFP uplinks accompany the access ports.

How is the MS120-8 Compact Switch managed?

The MS120-8 Compact Switch is configured through the browser-based Meraki dashboard rather than a local configuration CLI. Administrators can prepare configurations remotely and manage the device through the cloud interface. SNMP and Syslog support integration with external monitoring and logging systems; those integrations do not replace dashboard configuration.

How much PoE power does MS120-8LP-HW provide?

MS120-8LP-HW provides a shared 67W PoE budget across eight powered access ports, with a maximum of 30W on an individual port. The per-port maximum is not available simultaneously on every port. Add the connected devices' power requirements and compare their combined demand with the shared allowance before specifying endpoint quantities.

Which license does MS120-8LP-HW require?

MS120-8LP-HW uses a separately purchased Enterprise license and support term, with a minimum listed term of one year. LIC-MS120-8LP-1YR is the one-year option; the license range also includes three-, five-, seven- and ten-year terms. Hardware condition does not include or replace the separately required software entitlement.

Which optics can the MS120-8 Compact Switch use?

The MS120-8 Compact Switch uses 1G SFP transceivers in its two fixed uplink slots. Options include MA-SFP-1GB-SX for multimode fiber, MA-SFP-1GB-LX10 for single-mode fiber over 10 km, and MA-SFP-1GB-TX for copper. Select the transceiver against the cable medium and far-end interface; these slots do not provide 10G operation.

Is MS120-8LP-HW end of sale?

Yes, MS120-8LP-HW belongs to the end-of-sale MS120-8 family, with MS130 serving as the current migration family. End of sale is distinct from end of support: it ends manufacturer sales, not automatically all support. New sealed or refurbished condition does not restart the manufacturer's product lifecycle.

Which older switch did MS120-8LP-HW replace?

MS120-8LP-HW was an earlier replacement option for discontinued MS220-8P-HW, whose end-of-sale date was September 21, 2018. That replacement option was subsequently updated to MS120-8FP-HW, also discontinued. The historical relationship identifies an upgrade origin; it does not make either MS120 model a current-generation replacement purchase.

What is the difference between MS120-8LP-HW and MS120-8-HW?

MS120-8LP-HW supplies PoE+ to endpoints, whereas MS120-8-HW does not supply endpoint power. Both models are discontinued within the compact family. The PoE+ version addresses Ethernet-powered devices; the non-PoE version fits sites where every endpoint has its own power source and switch-supplied power is unnecessary.

What is the difference between MS120-8LP-HW and MS120-8FP-HW?

MS120-8LP-HW uses an external MA-PWR-90WAC adapter, while MS120-8FP-HW has a fixed internal power supply. Both models are discontinued members of the compact family. The external-adapter version fits a spare-adapter purchasing plan; the internal-supply version fits requirements to keep the supply within the chassis.

What condition and warranty options does ORM offer for MS120-8LP-HW?

ORM offers MS120-8LP-HW new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to 3-year extended coverage on new units and up to 1 year on refurbished units. Both conditions have 30-day returns; terms apply. Cisco's lifetime hardware warranty ends at the product's End-of-Support milestone and is separate from ORM coverage. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested.
