MS220-8P is a fanless, Layer 2 desktop access switch with eight 10/100/1000BASE-T PoE+ ports and two fixed 1G SFP uplinks. The compact MS220-8 series combines copper endpoint connections and fiber uplinks in an enclosure intended for small sites and office areas, including installations serving phones, cameras and wireless access points. An integrated AC supply keeps the power arrangement inside the chassis rather than requiring an external adapter. Cisco Meraki MS access switching uses a cloud interface instead of a command line, so administration follows a centralized management model. The discontinued MS220-8 is the closest non-PoE sibling when connected devices do not require power from their network ports.

20 Gbps switching capacity provides a nonblocking backplane for local traffic forwarding. 14.88 Mpps forwarding supports packet processing at the published standard packet size. 124W of shared PoE power requires the combined endpoint load to remain within a common allocation rather than treating every powered connection as an independent maximum-power entitlement. 149W full-load consumption establishes the AC power allowance to use when sizing the installation. The address table accommodates 8000 MAC entries, while support for 4095 VLANs provides segmentation for separate endpoint groups. Eight dedicated QoS queues distinguish traffic classes for voice, video and data applications. MS220-8P supports STP/RSTP, broadcast storm control and IGMP snooping for controlling switching behavior. LLDP and CDP identify neighboring equipment, while port mirroring provides another way to observe traffic. Jumbo-frame support extends to 9600-byte Ethernet frames. Inter-VLAN routing must reside upstream; this switch does not provide a dynamic-routing upgrade path.
Specify MS220-8P in new sealed or certified refurbished condition, with quantity and condition confirmed on the purchase order. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, clean boot, every port linking at rated speed, PoE output under load on every powered port and optics bay recognition; firmware is verified and configuration wiped to factory default. ORM coverage is up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units or up to 1 year for certified refurbished units, with 30-day returns on every condition, terms apply; Cisco service ended September 21, 2025. Enterprise and volume orders support PO acceptance, Net-30 for government and RMA with advance replacement, with regional stock and RMA across UK, EU, US and MEA.

When several small sites need coordinated port changes, Virtual Stacking groups geographically separated switch ports for configuration without physical stack links. The management group does not create a shared forwarding backplane. Specify the intended Dashboard organization and site assignments before the purchase order is finalized.
When an existing Meraki lab needs another observation point, live remote packet capture and cable testing provide two diagnostic tools for examining traffic and link problems. Keep that purchase separate from production refresh requirements. Specify the required diagnostic exercises and acceptance checks before ordering hardware.
10G fiber uplinks
The fixed fiber uplinks operate at 1G; faster optics do not turn the cages into 10G ports. A requirement for 10G uplinks needs different switching hardware.
Physical stacking with shared forwarding
Virtual Stacking provides centralized port administration, not a physical stack backplane. Interconnected members operating as one forwarding system exceed this compact model's capability.
Active Cisco hardware support
Cisco service ended September 21, 2025. For a current eight-port PoE migration option, consider MS130-8P-HW, whose 120W power allocation differs from the older switch.

MS220-8P identifies a Meraki MS220 model with eight Gigabit access ports and PoE+; MS220 is the series identifier, 8 is the access-port count, and P identifies the powered version. MS220-8P-HW is the hardware ordering form. Neither name selects a perpetual routing license or indicates physical stacking.
MS220-8P is configured through the browser-based Meraki Dashboard cloud interface rather than a command-line interface. Dashboard provides centralized configuration, historical port information and scheduled firmware administration. SNMP and SYSLOG integrate monitoring with other systems, but those integrations are not alternative switch-configuration interfaces. Plan the Dashboard organization before assigning the hardware.
MS220-8P is discontinued: end of sale was September 21, 2018, and Cisco support ended September 21, 2025. MS120-8FP-HW was the replacement, but that model is also discontinued. The current migration direction is the MS130 series; MS130-8P-HW provides eight Gigabit ports with a different, 120W PoE allocation.
ORM Systems offers MS220-8P new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for certified refurbished units. Returns are 30 days on every condition, terms apply. Cisco's original lifetime hardware warranty ended when service ceased September 21, 2025.
MS220-8P uses a model-specific Meraki Enterprise license, with LIC-MS220-8P-1YR and LIC-MS220-8P-3YR identifying one- and three-year terms. The hardware name does not select a perpetual network tier. Confirm license eligibility and the intended Dashboard organization before ordering; a license purchase cannot extend the September 21, 2025 support cutoff.
MS220-8P provides a shared 124W PoE+ budget across eight access ports, with individual ports supporting 30W. Eight endpoints at 30W would require 240W, so full per-port maximum power is not available simultaneously. Size the combined endpoint load against the shared allowance rather than counting only powered ports.
MS220-8P has two fixed 1G SFP uplink ports, separate from the eight copper access ports. The uplinks accept pluggable SFP optics for fiber connectivity; they are not 10G SFP+ ports or an expansion-module bay. Specify compatible transceivers for the required fiber connection when preparing the hardware order.
The MS220-8 series supports Virtual Stacking for centralized management, not physical stacking or a shared forwarding backplane. Switch ports can be administered together even when devices are geographically separate. No physical stack-kit purchase turns this compact model into a hardware stack, so specify it as a standalone forwarding device.
MS220-8P uses a fixed internal AC power supply accepting 100-240V AC, with no second internal supply bay for redundancy. The switch does not require an external power adapter. Full-load consumption reaches 149W versus 13W idle, so size AC power availability using the loaded figure.
The MS220-8 series is Layer 2 and does not provide inter-VLAN routing or dynamic routing protocols. VLAN trunking, STP/RSTP and IPv4 ACLs provide switching and access-control functions instead. Place gateway and routing functions on an upstream device; a management license does not convert this model into a routed-access switch.
MS220-8P supplies PoE+ to connected endpoints, whereas MS220-8 supplies no PoE. Both compact models have eight Gigabit copper ports and two 1G SFP uplinks, so endpoint power is the purchasing difference. Both are discontinued; the powered model suits legacy powered-endpoint requirements, while the non-PoE model fits legacy self-powered devices.
MS220-8P has ended Cisco support, while MS130-8P-HW belongs to the current MS130 migration family. The older switch is an unsupported legacy purchase rather than a current refresh model. Buyers maintaining an existing MS220-8 installation should distinguish that requirement from buyers specifying current-generation eight-port PoE hardware.
The MS220-8 series supports desktop placement and wall or utility-board mounting with included mounting hardware. The enclosure is 230 mm wide, so it is not a full-width 19-inch rack chassis. Confirm the intended surface, cable clearance and mounting arrangement before specifying installation hardware on the purchase order.
