Fanless Cloud-Managed Access for Branch Wiring Closets

MS225-48-HW provides fanless Gigabit access with 48 copper access ports and four fixed 10G SFP+ uplinks for branch and campus networks. The Meraki MS225 chassis combines Layer 2+ functionality with a 1U rack format and cloud-managed administration. Data-only access ports connect independently powered Ethernet devices without drawing endpoint power from the switch. The discontinued MS225-48LP-HW adds a shared 370W PoE+ budget where switch-delivered endpoint power is required. Fixed uplinks avoid a separate network-module purchase, while dedicated stacking interfaces leave the access and distribution connections available for network traffic. This configuration serves existing installations that need high-density copper connectivity without powered access ports.

MS225-48-HW price for new stock is $1,193.85. MS225-48-HW refurb price is $175.35. MS225-48-HW is in stock and available for next-day dispatch. (terms applied)

Technical Details

176 Gbps switching capacity provides the non-blocking backplane for access and uplink traffic. 130.95 Mpps forwarding capacity defines packet-processing throughput separately from the bandwidth rating. 32000 MAC entries accommodate learned Ethernet addresses, while 4094 VLANs provide segmentation across separate broadcast domains. Static routing and DHCP relay cover basic routed-access functions; dynamic routing is not supported. MS225-48-HW supports STP/RSTP with BPDU guard, Root guard and Loop guard for Layer 2 topology control. LLDP and CDP provide neighbor discovery, and IGMP snooping filters multicast delivery. Security controls combine IEEE 802.1X RADIUS authentication, MAB, IPv4/IPv6 ACLs, DHCP snooping and Dynamic ARP Inspection. Eight QoS queues, including six configurable DSCP-to-CoS mappings, let administrators align forwarding treatment with existing traffic policies. The MS225-48 exposes SNMP and SYSLOG for integration with external monitoring systems. These functions support Ethernet access policy enforcement without turning the switch into a dynamic-routing distribution device.

Ordering

ORM Systems supplies MS225-48-HW new sealed or certified refurbished; new units carry up to a 3-year extended warranty and certified refurbished units carry up to 1 year, with 30-day returns on every condition, terms apply. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, rated-speed links on every port, clean boot, optics bay recognition and PSU status; firmware is verified and configurations are wiped to factory default. Specify the condition, quantity and required accessories on the purchase order before release. For enterprise and volume orders, ORM accepts POs, provides Net-30 for government and handles RMA with advance replacement across UK, EU, US and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Separate cloud licensing choice

MS225-48-HW orders need separate cloud licensing: Enterprise co-term starts at one year; MS200 Large subscriptions start at one year with Essentials LIC-MS-200-L-E or Advantage LIC-MS-200-L-A. Specify the licensing model and term on the PO.

Stack cabling and partners

MS225-48-HW physical stacking uses MA-CBL-40G-50CM, MA-CBL-40G-1M or MA-CBL-40G-3M cables and permits MS210 stack partners. Specify cable lengths and compatible members when ordering additions to an existing physical stack.

Optics and regional power cord

MS225-48-HW needs separately selected uplink optics, such as MA-SFP-10GB-SR or MA-SFP-10GB-LR, plus MA-PWR-CORD-US for a US installation. Specify the optical link and destination region because regional power cords are not included.

Best For

Multi-Site Configuration Standardization

When branches need common settings prepared before equipment arrives, Meraki Dashboard supports advance configuration and zero-touch remote provisioning. Administrators can prepare port settings centrally instead of depending on local command-line configuration. Specify the destination Dashboard organization, configuration ownership and site connectivity needed for initial cloud check-in before the PO.

Replacement Hardware Staging

When replacement hardware needs validation before delivery, MS225-48-HW offers remote cable testing, ping, traceroute and packet capture rather than relying only on a link indicator. Event and configuration change logs support the acceptance record. Specify the diagnostic checks and destination configuration to verify before releasing the PO.

Not Suitable If

Power for phones and cameras

MS225-48-HW does not provide PoE on its access ports. Connected endpoints need independent power; replacing a powered access switch requires separate arrangements for endpoint power.

Dynamic routing at the access edge

MS225-48-HW supports static routing only. A deployment that depends on dynamic route exchange must retain a separate routing device rather than assign that role to this switch.

Dual internal redundant power supplies

MS225-48-HW uses one fixed internal power supply without a second internal PSU bay. External redundancy does not satisfy a requirement for dual internal supplies.

Questions & Answers

What does the MS225-48-HW part number mean?

MS225-48-HW identifies Meraki MS225 hardware with 48 Gigabit access ports: MS225 names the switch family, 48 specifies access-port density, and HW denotes the hardware order. This data-only version has four fixed 10G SFP+ uplinks; cloud licensing is separate rather than a perpetual tier encoded in the suffix.

How is MS225-48-HW managed?

MS225-48-HW is configured through the web-based Meraki Dashboard rather than a traditional switch CLI. Dashboard provides centralized port administration and scheduled firmware upgrades. SNMP and SYSLOG integrate monitoring with external systems, while role-based administration controls which administrators can view devices or make configuration changes across the managed network.

What is the lifecycle status of MS225-48-HW?

MS225-48-HW belongs to the end-of-sale Meraki MS225 family; end of sale does not itself mean that support has ended. Existing deployments require separate consideration of cloud licensing and support entitlement. Evaluate the remaining service horizon before ordering additional hardware for an established installation.

What condition and warranty does ORM Systems offer for MS225-48-HW?

ORM Systems offers MS225-48-HW new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for refurbished units. Every condition has 30-day returns, terms apply. Cisco's separate, nontransferable lifetime hardware warranty covers eligible original purchasers only and ends at product end of support.

Which licensing options are available for MS225-48-HW?

MS225-48-HW supports Enterprise co-term licensing in 1-, 3-, 5-, 7- or 10-year terms, or MS200 Large subscription licensing from one to ten years. Subscription options are Essentials LIC-MS-200-L-E and Advantage LIC-MS-200-L-A. HW identifies hardware rather than an included perpetual license; specify the licensing model, tier and term separately.

Which older switch did MS225-48-HW replace?

MS225-48-HW originally replaced the discontinued MS220-48-HW, which reached end of sale on July 29, 2017. The functionally equivalent replacement was later changed. The predecessor's July 29, 2024 end-of-support date belongs to MS220-48-HW, not to MS225-48-HW or the wider Meraki MS225 family.

Does the Meraki MS225-48 supply PoE?

No, the Meraki MS225-48 is a data-only switch and does not supply PoE to connected devices. Phones, access points and cameras therefore need independent power when connected to this model. Hardware condition does not change the absence of powered access ports on this particular configuration.

What uplink ports and optics does MS225-48-HW support?

MS225-48-HW has four fixed 10G SFP+ uplinks, and compatible optical options include MA-SFP-10GB-SR and MA-SFP-10GB-LR. Uplink optics are ordered separately. Select the transceiver against the installed fiber and required distance; no removable uplink card is needed to expose these ports.

How many switches can a Meraki MS225 physical stack contain?

Meraki MS225 physical stacks contain eight members and provide 80 Gbps stacking bandwidth through two dedicated stacking interfaces. MS210 switches can join the same physical stack. Cabling options are MA-CBL-40G-50CM, MA-CBL-40G-1M and MA-CBL-40G-3M; select lengths for the rack layout and configure membership in Meraki Dashboard.

What power supply is installed in the Meraki MS225-48?

Meraki MS225-48 uses a fixed internal AC supply accepting 100-240V AC and does not provide a second internal PSU bay. Power demand is 25W idle and 42W at full load. The PWR-RPS2300 interface is for external redundancy, not installation of another internal power module.

What is the difference between MS225-48-HW and MS225-48LP-HW?

MS225-48-HW has data-only access ports, whereas MS225-48LP-HW supplies PoE+ from a shared 370W budget. Both are discontinued MS225 configurations. The data-only model fits independently powered devices; the LP model fits an existing installation that requires switch-delivered endpoint power within its shared budget.

What is the difference between MS225-48-HW and MS225-24-HW?

MS225-48-HW offers 48 Gigabit access ports, while MS225-24-HW offers 24; both have four 10G SFP+ uplinks. These are discontinued MS225 models. The 48-port model addresses higher connection counts, while the 24-port version addresses smaller existing installations without changing the uplink class.

What is the difference between MS225-48-HW and MS210-48-HW?

MS225-48-HW has four 10G SFP+ uplinks; MS210-48-HW has four 1G SFP uplinks, with 48 Gigabit access ports on either model. Both families have announced retirement milestones. The MS225 configuration addresses existing installations requiring 10G uplinks, while the MS210 configuration retains Gigabit uplink connectivity.

What routing functions does the Meraki MS225-48 support?

Meraki MS225-48 supports static routing and DHCP relay, but it does not provide dynamic routing. Ethernet switching remains its primary access role. Check the intended addressing, next hops and route-maintenance requirements before assigning routed interfaces; a separate routing device is needed where dynamic route exchange is required.
