Low-Latency Connectivity for Top-of-Rack Server Networks

N3K-C3524P-10G is a low-latency data center switch with 24 enabled 1/10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ interfaces and default Layer 2 switching. Fixed data interfaces carry server connections and network uplinks without a removable uplink-card bay. The 1U chassis belongs to the Nexus 3500 family within the Nexus 3000 portfolio, serving top-of-rack deployments. Cisco Nexus 3524 hardware contains 48 physical cages, but the initial port entitlement activates only the licensed interfaces. The discontinued N3K-C3548P-10G enables 48 ports instead. High-frequency trading and high-performance computing are established roles for this architecture. Buyers retaining the original generation should distinguish physical port availability from enabled interfaces when matching an existing installation, rather than assuming every visible cage is ready for a connection.

N3K-C3524P-10G price for new stock is $4,819.50, a 5.5% saving from the Cisco list price of $5,100.00. N3K-C3524P-10G refurb price is $598.48. N3K-C3524P-10G is in stock and available for next-day dispatch. (terms applied)

Technical Details

480 Gbps switching capacity supports line-rate traffic through the enabled data interfaces. 360 Mpps forwarding provides a separate packet-rate limit for traffic sizing. Normal mode supports 64000 MAC addresses, while an 18 MB shared packet buffer accommodates queued traffic across the chassis. N3K-C3524P-10G carries 4 GB of DRAM and 2 GB of boot flash for its operating environment and local software storage. LACP supports aggregated links; RSTP and MSTP provide spanning-tree operation. SSHv2 and Telnet expose the CLI, while NETCONF, SNMP versions 1, 2, and 3, and Cisco DCNM provide additional management paths. Layer 3 Base N3548-BAS1K9 unlocks OSPFv2 with a 256-route limit and EIGRP Stub; LAN Enterprise N3524-LAN1K9 adds BGP and full EIGRP. 245W maximum power draw belongs in rack power sizing rather than the power-supply nameplate rating. The network interfaces do not provide PoE output.

Ordering

Specify N3K-C3524P-10G in new sealed or certified refurbished condition and identify the required configuration on the PO. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested, including optics bay recognition, PSU and fan status, firmware verification, and configuration wiping to factory default. ORM's warranty is up to 3-year extended on new units and up to 1 year on certified refurbished units, with 30-day returns on every condition, terms apply; Cisco's original 1-year limited hardware warranty and service ended October 31, 2021. For enterprise and volume orders, POs are accepted, government buyers receive Net-30, and regional stock and RMA with advance replacement cover the UK, EU, US, and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Replacement chain matters

Migration orders should specify N3K-C3524P-XL rather than discontinued N3K-C3524P-10GX. The latter was the first replacement, but its end-of-sale date was January 31, 2022.

Routing entitlements are separate

Routed deployments require Layer 3 Base N3548-BAS1K9 before LAN Enterprise N3524-LAN1K9. Algo Boost N3548-ALGK9 is separate. Specify feature entitlements on the PO rather than assuming the chassis PID includes them.

Specify connection parts explicitly

Fiber link orders should pair SFP-10G-SR with multimode fiber or SFP-10G-LR with single-mode fiber. SFP-H10GB-CU1M provides a 1 m direct-attach alternative; match the remote endpoint and installed medium before ordering.

Best For

Existing Rack Expansion

When an existing rack needs additional connections without replacing the chassis, N3548-24P-UPG= enables another 24 ports; L-N3548-24P-UPG= is the electronic-delivery form. Treat expansion as an entitlement purchase rather than a line-card installation, and confirm the installed port license and required delivery form before the PO.

Airflow Standardization

When standardizing switches across racks with different aisle orientations, port-side exhaust uses NXA-FAN-30CFM-F with N2200-PAC-400W, while port-side intake uses NXA-FAN-30CFM-B with N2200-PAC-400W-B. Match airflow across the complete fan and power-supply set, and specify the required direction for every unit before issuing the purchase order.

Batch Staging

When staging multiple switches before handover, Power On Auto Provisioning and Python scripting provide setup mechanisms, while configuration rollback supports reversal of configuration changes. The chassis has one USB port. Define the intended staging workflow, required software image, and production configuration before specifying the batch on the PO.

Not Suitable If

Active Cisco hardware service coverage

Cisco service ended October 31, 2021. Orders requiring manufacturer service should use the current successor N3K-C3524P-XL rather than this discontinued original-generation switch.

Routing without additional feature licenses

The system-default software provides Layer 2 switching, not licensed routing. Layer 3 deployments require additional entitlements, with LAN Enterprise features requiring the Base license first.

Dedicated QSFP uplink cages

The chassis uses fixed SFP+ interfaces and has no built-in QSFP cages. Logical 40G operation combines four sequential SFP+ interfaces rather than adding a separate uplink bank.

Questions & Answers

What does each part of N3K-C3524P-10G mean?

N3K-C3524P-10G identifies a Nexus 3524 with 24 licensed 10G ports: N3K places the product in the Nexus 3000 family, C3524P identifies the Nexus 3524 hardware, and 10G denotes the 10 Gigabit Ethernet configuration. The P does not indicate powered Ethernet ports; this model uses non-PoE SFP+ connections.

How is the Cisco Nexus 3524 managed?

Cisco Nexus 3524 supports CLI management through the serial console, SSHv2, or Telnet, using in-band or out-of-band access. Additional mechanisms include Cisco DCNM, NETCONF, SNMP versions 1, 2, and 3, Python scripting, and Power On Auto Provisioning. Define the management connection and authorized access settings before introducing the switch into an existing environment.

Is N3K-C3524P-10G end of life?

Yes, N3K-C3524P-10G reached end of sale October 7, 2016, and Cisco service ended October 31, 2021. Its first replacement, N3K-C3524P-10GX, is also discontinued; the replacement chain ends at current N3K-C3524P-XL. An order for the original unit therefore cannot include active Cisco manufacturer service coverage.

What condition and warranty options does ORM Systems offer for N3K-C3524P-10G?

ORM Systems supplies N3K-C3524P-10G new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for certified refurbished units. Returns are 30 days for every condition; terms apply. Cisco's original 1-year limited hardware warranty no longer applies, and Cisco service ended October 31, 2021.

What licensing does N3K-C3524P-10G require?

N3K-C3524P-10G uses the license-free system-default Layer 2 feature set unless additional entitlements are supplied. Layer 3 Base N3548-BAS1K9 adds routing, LAN Enterprise N3524-LAN1K9 requires Base, and Algo Boost N3548-ALGK9 enables NAT and warp functions. Specify these feature licenses separately rather than assuming the chassis order includes routing or latency-mode entitlements.

Which optics work with the Nexus 3500?

Nexus 3500 supports SFP-10G-SR for multimode fiber and SFP-10G-LR for single-mode fiber; SFP-H10GB-CU1M provides a 1 m direct-attach copper connection. Select the reach and medium together with the remote endpoint, and itemize the chosen connection parts on the PO rather than treating every SFP+ connection as interchangeable.

Can N3K-C3524P-10G use redundant power supplies?

Yes, N3K-C3524P-10G supports redundant internal power supplies and AC or DC modules with matching airflow. N2200-PAC-400W is the port-side-exhaust AC option; N2200-PAC-400W-B is the port-side-intake AC option. Maximum switch draw is 245W, not the rating printed on the power supply. Specify power input and airflow on the order.

What is the difference between N3K-C3524P-10G and N3K-C3548P-10G?

N3K-C3548P-10G enables 48 network ports, whereas N3K-C3524P-10G enables 24 on the same underlying hardware. Both original-generation models are discontinued. The 24-port configuration matches a legacy installation with fewer active connections; the 48-port configuration matches an existing installation requiring every interface enabled without a port-activation upgrade.

What is the difference between N3K-C3524P-10G and N3K-C3524P-L3?

N3K-C3524P-L3 includes Layer 3 licensing with 24 ports licensed, whereas N3K-C3524P-10G is the unbundled 24-port hardware configuration. Both models are discontinued, and the L3 bundle has no named replacement. The base unit matches a Layer 2 legacy bill of materials; the L3 bundle identifies a previously licensed routed configuration.

What is the difference between N3K-C3524P-10G and N3K-C3524P-XL?

N3K-C3524P-XL increases system memory to 16 GB, compared with 4 GB in N3K-C3524P-10G. The XL model is the current endpoint of the replacement chain, and the original unit is discontinued. Retaining the original matches legacy sparing; the XL model suits buyers moving to the current hardware generation.
