WS-C3550-12G is a managed Layer 3 Gigabit Ethernet switch with ten GBIC-based interfaces and two 10/100/1000 copper Ethernet ports. Its fixed interface architecture serves fiber-heavy enterprise access and aggregation connections rather than a deployment requiring a removable uplink card. The Catalyst 3550 includes the IP Services software image, formerly called the Enhanced Multilayer Image, for hardware-based unicast and multicast routing. The chassis occupies 1.5 rack units. The discontinued WS-C3550-12T sibling assigns ten interfaces to copper Ethernet instead, making media distribution the principal distinction between these two Gigabit models. This 12-port Gigabit multilayer switch belongs to a family positioned for enterprise wiring closets and intermediate network backbones.

24 Gbps switching capacity provides the chassis bandwidth for its Gigabit interfaces. 17 Mpps forwarding at 64-byte packet size supplies a separate packet-processing figure for workload sizing. OSPF, EIGRP, RIPv1, RIPv2 and static routing support IPv4 network connections, while PIM-SM, PIM-DM and PIM-SD provide multicast routing modes. WS-C3550-12G uses 4 MB of shared packet memory across its interfaces, making buffer allocation a consideration for concurrent traffic bursts. System resources include 64 MB of DRAM and 16 MB of flash. Configurable maxima reach 12000 MAC addresses and 24000 unicast routes; memory-allocation profiles determine how resources are assigned to the intended configuration. STP and PVST+ handle Layer 2 topology control, and PAgP supports EtherChannel formation. Console CLI, Telnet and SNMPv1 / SNMPv2c provide local or in-band administration. Native 10G interfaces are not provided.
WS-C3550-12G is offered new sealed or certified refurbished, with ORM warranty coverage of up to a 3-year extended term for new units and up to 1 year for certified refurbished units; every condition includes 30-day returns, with terms applying. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, rated-speed links on every port, clean boot and PSU status, with firmware verified and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify the condition, quantity and required media on the order. ORM Systems accepts POs, offers Net-30 for government and provides RMA with advance replacement, with regional stock and RMA coverage across the UK, EU, US and MEA.

For a legacy lab rebuilding tagged-frame paths, the Catalyst 3550 Gigabit models support a configurable 2025-byte MTU for bridging MPLS-tagged frames. That limit belongs in the test plan before configurations are standardized across spares. Specify the required frame size and media interfaces on the purchase order.
For a multi-site purchase preserving an existing browser-managed switch group, Cisco CMS can manage 16 interconnected devices through one IP address without requiring every device to share a wiring closet. Confirm the management workstation, cluster membership and configuration workflow before fixing the quantity and condition on the purchase order.
10G or faster fiber connections
WS-C3550-12G provides Gigabit GBIC interfaces, not native 10G connections. A requirement for faster individual links exceeds the fixed interface speed of this model.
PoE-powered phones or access points
WS-C3550-12G does not supply endpoint power through its copper Ethernet ports. Connected devices requiring PoE need an independent power source rather than this switch alone.
Active Cisco support for production hardware
Cisco support for the Catalyst 3550 ended May 2, 2011. WS-C3550-12G cannot satisfy a purchase requirement for hardware with active Cisco service eligibility.

WS-C3550-12G identifies a Catalyst 3550 Gigabit configuration with ten GBIC-based interfaces and two copper Ethernet ports. The WS-C3550 portion identifies the switch family, while 12G distinguishes this twelve-interface Gigabit model. The part number has no separate software-image suffix; the Gigabit model ships with IP Services, formerly EMI.
The Catalyst 3550 supports browser-based Cisco CMS, console CLI, Telnet and SNMPv1 / SNMPv2c management, with CiscoWorks integration also available. Console access provides out-of-band administration, while the network-based options require an appropriate management connection. Specify the intended administration workflow when preparing the configuration and acceptance checks for the ordered unit.
Yes, WS-C3550-12G is discontinued: the Catalyst 3550 reached end of sale on May 2, 2006, and Cisco support ended May 2, 2011. New sealed condition therefore means existing inventory, not current manufacture. Buyers requiring active Cisco support should exclude this model from that purchase requirement.
ORM Systems offers WS-C3550-12G new sealed or certified refurbished: new orders carry up to a 3-year extended warranty and refurbished orders up to 1 year. Every condition has 30-day returns; terms apply. Cisco's original Limited Lifetime hardware warranty is no longer active because Cisco service ended May 2, 2011.
WS-C3550-12G ships with the IP Services image, formerly called the Enhanced Multilayer Image or EMI. This is the Gigabit model's included software image, rather than an IP Base configuration awaiting an image upgrade. Specify the required installed image on the quote and include image verification in the acceptance requirements.
No, WS-C3550-12G does not provide PoE on its two copper Ethernet ports. Those interfaces carry Ethernet data rather than endpoint power. Connected phones or access points needing power must receive it independently, so the endpoint power requirement should be resolved separately before the hardware purchase order is finalized.
The Catalyst 3550-12G uses GBIC-format Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, not SFP cages. Its fiber connection options include 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX/LH and 1000BASE-ZX media with SC connectors. Match the required fiber type, connector and link reach before ordering; an existing SFP inventory is not interchangeable with these GBIC interfaces.
Yes, WS-C3550-12G supports GigaStack connectivity with nine switches in a daisy-chain configuration. GigaStack provides 1 Gbps in that arrangement or 2 Gbps point-to-point connectivity. The sixteen-device Cisco CMS management group is a separate capability, so specify the intended physical interconnection rather than treating browser-managed grouping as the same arrangement.
WS-C3550-12G supports static routing, RIPv1, RIPv2, OSPF, IGRP and EIGRP through its included multilayer software image. Multicast routing modes include PIM-SM, PIM-DM and PIM-SD, with HSRP available for gateway redundancy. Confirm the required routing configuration and installed software image when preparing a replacement unit for an existing network.
No, WS-C3550-12G has an internal AC supply rather than two internal redundant power modules. External backup power is supported through PWR300-AC-RPS-N1. That external system can connect to six devices but powers one failed device at a time, so its shared backup behavior must be considered when specifying the power arrangement.
WS-C3550-12G has ten Gigabit GBIC interfaces and two copper Gigabit ports, whereas WS-C3550-12T has ten copper Gigabit ports and two GBIC interfaces. Both models are discontinued. The former matches fiber-heavy legacy connections; the latter matches copper-heavy legacy connections, making installed media the deciding distinction when comparing existing equipment.
WS-C3550-48-EMI provides forty-eight 10/100 copper ports, whereas WS-C3550-12G provides two copper Gigabit ports alongside its fiber-oriented interfaces. Both models are discontinued and include the enhanced multilayer software image. The forty-eight-port model addresses dense legacy Fast Ethernet access; the twelve-interface model addresses legacy Gigabit aggregation requirements.
