WS-C3550-48-EMI is a Layer 3 enterprise access switch with 48 copper 10/100 Mbps ports and two fixed Gigabit Ethernet GBIC uplink slots. The access ports are non-PoE, so connected endpoints require their own power. Its 1U rack-mount chassis belongs to the Catalyst 3550 family, and the included Enhanced Multilayer Software Image enables advanced IP routing rather than switching alone. The Intelligent Ethernet Switch combines endpoint connectivity with routed interfaces and traffic controls at the network edge. The discontinued WS-C3550-48-SMI has the same physical port arrangement but ships with the Standard Multilayer Software Image instead of EMI.

13.6 Gbps switching capacity accommodates traffic across the access and uplink interfaces. 10.1 Mpps forwarding handles 64-byte packets, while hardware-based forwarding supports routed traffic between VLANs. OSPF, EIGRP, IGRP, RIPv1, RIPv2, and static routing provide the unicast routing choices; PIM-SM and PIM-DM support multicast routing, and HSRP supports redundant gateway configurations. WS-C3550-48-EMI has 64 MB DRAM and 16 MB flash for its operating software and configuration storage. An 8000-entry MAC table supports endpoint learning, and the configurable unicast route ceiling is 16000 routes. Cisco IOS CLI and SNMP provide configuration and monitoring paths. 110W maximum power consumption establishes the switch's electrical load allowance without an endpoint-power allocation.
ORM Systems offers WS-C3550-48-EMI in new sealed and certified refurbished condition, with up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for certified refurbished units. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, rated-speed links on every port, clean boot, and PSU status; firmware is verified and configurations are wiped to factory default. Specify the required condition, accessories, and quantities on the PO; every condition has 30-day returns, terms apply, and Cisco hardware service ended May 2, 2011. Enterprise and volume orders can use PO acceptance, government Net-30, and RMA with advance replacement, with regional stock and RMA across the UK, EU, US, and MEA.

When replacing a discontinued WS-C3548-XL-EN, this model is one of its named transition options. A replacement purchase should preserve the required interface arrangement while accounting for any configuration changes introduced by multilayer switching. Identify the existing software requirements and required accessories before specifying the replacement on the PO.
When recreating older enterprise configurations in a lab, the switch supports 1005 VLANs and 128 spanning-tree instances. Those limits are distinct, so a configuration using many VLANs still needs a separate spanning-tree assessment. Include the intended VLAN layout and spanning-tree requirements in the staging checklist before ordering.
When maintaining several established switching locations, Cisco Cluster Management Suite can manage 16 interconnected switches through a single IP address without confining them to one wiring closet. Compatibility depends on the participating switch families. Record the intended cluster members and management connectivity before specifying units for a standardized replacement purchase.
Gigabit copper access ports
The 48 copper access ports support 10/100 Mbps only; Gigabit Ethernet connectivity is confined to the two built-in GBIC uplink slots.
Power delivery to connected endpoints
The 48 RJ-45 access ports carry data without endpoint power. Phones, access points, and other powered devices require separate power arrangements.
10G connections to distribution switches
The two built-in GBIC uplink slots support Gigabit Ethernet connections, not 10G. A supported GBIC changes the connection medium rather than that speed ceiling.

WS-C3550-48-EMI identifies a Catalyst 3550 switch with 48 Fast Ethernet access ports and the Enhanced Multilayer Software Image installed. WS-C3550 identifies the switch family, 48 identifies its copper access-port count, and EMI identifies its software feature set. Two additional GBIC slots provide Gigabit Ethernet uplink connectivity.
WS-C3550-48-EMI supports Cisco IOS CLI, browser-based Cisco Cluster Management Suite, SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, and CiscoWorks2000 management. A serial console provides a local management connection. Cluster Management Suite also provides graphical configuration and troubleshooting for multiple interconnected switches, whereas CLI access allows direct configuration of the individual switch.
WS-C3550-48-EMI is discontinued, and Cisco hardware support ended on May 2, 2011, following end of sale on May 2, 2006. The Catalyst 3550 family is retired rather than a currently supported hardware purchase. Replacement or sparing decisions therefore need to account for the absence of ongoing Cisco hardware service.
ORM Systems offers WS-C3550-48-EMI new sealed with up to a 3-year extended warranty or certified refurbished with up to 1 year. Returns are available for 30 days on every condition; terms apply. Cisco's original limited-lifetime hardware warranty is no longer active because Cisco support ended on May 2, 2011.
WS-C3550-48-EMI comes with the Enhanced Multilayer Software Image, which provides advanced IP routing as part of this hardware configuration. EMI enables OSPF, EIGRP, multicast routing, and HSRP. The Standard Multilayer Software Image is the separate lower-feature configuration, with an EMI upgrade available through CD-3550-EMI=.
WS-C3550-48-EMI is a named transition option for WS-C3548-XL-EN, the older Catalyst 3548 XL Enterprise Edition switch. That predecessor is also discontinued. The transition preserves a 48-port Fast Ethernet access arrangement while introducing the Catalyst 3550 multilayer feature set, so existing configurations require review rather than an assumption of identical behavior.
No, WS-C3550-48-EMI does not provide PoE on its 48 copper access ports. Those interfaces supply Ethernet data connectivity only, so connected devices need another power source. The model should not be specified as the endpoint-power source for phones or wireless access points merely because other Catalyst 3550 variants provide inline power.
The Catalyst 3550 supports Gigabit Ethernet GBIC uplinks, including WS-G5484 for 1000BASE-SX and WS-G5486 for 1000BASE-LX/LH connections. These optical options use SC fiber connectors rather than smaller SFP interfaces. Optic selection therefore needs to match the fiber type, remote interface, and patch-lead connectors used by the existing connection.
A Catalyst 3550 GigaStack can connect nine switches in a cascaded arrangement using WS-X3500-XL. Cascaded operation shares 1Gbps, while point-to-point operation supports 2Gbps. GigaStack connections use CAB-GS-50CM or CAB-GS-1M, and the adapter occupies a GBIC slot that must be accounted for when planning the remaining uplinks.
WS-C3550-48-EMI has 48 non-PoE access ports, whereas WS-C3550-24PWR-EMI has 24 access ports with inline power. Both configurations have two Gigabit GBIC uplink slots. The former addresses higher-density unpowered legacy access, while the latter addresses powered legacy endpoints at lower port density; both models are discontinued.
WS-C3550-48-EMI includes the Enhanced Multilayer Software Image, whereas WS-C3550-48-SMI includes the Standard Multilayer Software Image and can be upgraded to EMI. Their physical access and uplink arrangements match. EMI addresses legacy purchases requiring advanced IP routing; SMI addresses the lower-feature software configuration. Both switches are discontinued.
WS-C3550-48-EMI provides 48 Fast Ethernet access ports, whereas WS-C3550-24-EMI provides 24; both include EMI and two Gigabit GBIC uplink slots. The 48-port model addresses a larger legacy connection requirement, while the 24-port model addresses fewer connections without changing that software tier. Both configurations are discontinued.
