WS-C3550-12T is a managed Layer 3 enterprise switch with ten 10/100/1000 RJ-45 access ports and two fixed Gigabit Ethernet GBIC interfaces. The copper ports provide data connectivity without endpoint power, while the GBIC interfaces accommodate the required uplink media. The Catalyst 3550 combines access switching with hardware-based routing in a full-width, 1.5U rack chassis. IP Services, originally called the Enhanced Multilayer Image, is included on this Gigabit model rather than requiring an upgrade from the standard image. The discontinued WS-C3550-12G reverses the media balance, providing ten GBIC interfaces and two copper ports. For an existing installation, that distinction determines whether the replacement matches a copper-oriented access configuration or a fiber-oriented aggregation configuration. Both models belong to a retired product family, so manufacturer support cannot accompany a new deployment of this hardware.

24 Gbps switching capacity provides the switching fabric for the installed interfaces, while 17 Mpps forwarding handles 64-byte packets. Static routing, RIPv1, RIPv2, OSPF, IGRP, EIGRP and BGP support routed configurations; PIM-SM and PIM-DM provide multicast routing. WS-C3550-12T has 64 MB DRAM, 16 MB flash and a 4 MB shared packet buffer, separating system memory from traffic buffering. Configurable scale reaches 12000 MAC addresses and 24000 unicast routes for configuration sizing. Administration includes a CMS web interface, console CLI, Telnet, SNMP and CiscoWorks; SSH requires a cryptographic software image. Environmental commands expose fan, temperature and power status for operational checks. 190W maximum consumption provides the figure for electrical provisioning, not an endpoint-power budget. The internal AC supply accepts the specified low- and high-voltage input ranges, and power redundancy uses an external RPS rather than a second internal supply.
ORM Systems offers WS-C3550-12T in new sealed and certified refurbished condition, with up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units and up to 1 year on certified refurbished units; every condition includes 30-day returns, with terms applying. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on, POST, every port linking at rated speed and a clean boot, with firmware verified and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify the condition, required accessories and quantity on the purchase order. POs are accepted, government buyers can use Net-30, and enterprise or volume orders can specify regional stock and RMA handling across the UK, EU, US and MEA, including advance replacement.

When staging a replacement for an existing installation, establish the administrative connection before loading the production configuration. SSH version 2 requires a cryptographic image, so the installed software matters independently of the hardware identity. Specify the required image and management-access acceptance checks before the PO.
When replenishing spares for an existing rack, match the mounting hardware to the replacement chassis rather than assuming brackets from another model will fit. RCKMNT-3550-1.5RU= is the rack-mount kit for this model. Specify that kit and confirm the required mounting hardware is included before ordering.
Where a purchase preserves redundant default gateways rather than adding endpoint ports, HSRP is available with the included routing image. Review the existing gateway configuration and peer behavior during staging instead of treating replacement as a cabling-only task. Specify the software image and gateway acceptance checks on the PO.
10G uplinks to distribution
WS-C3550-12T has Gigabit Ethernet GBIC interfaces, not 10G uplinks. A purchase requiring a 10G distribution connection needs different hardware; changing the transceiver cannot provide that speed.
PoE-powered phones or access points
WS-C3550-12T supplies no inline power on its copper ports. Phones or access points requiring power through their network connection need separate power equipment or a different switch.
Active Cisco manufacturer support
WS-C3550-12T belongs to a retired family that Cisco no longer supports. Reseller coverage does not restore Cisco service, so manufacturer-support requirements exclude this hardware.

WS-C3550-12T identifies the Catalyst 3550 copper-oriented Gigabit model: WS-C3550 identifies the family, and 12T identifies ten 10/100/1000 ports plus two GBIC interfaces. The configuration totals twelve network interfaces, not twelve copper access ports. This model has no separate image suffix and ships with EMI, now called IP Services.
WS-C3550-12T is managed through the CMS web interface, serial-console CLI, Telnet, SNMP and CiscoWorks. SSH version 1 or 2 additionally requires a cryptographic software image. Match the installed image to the administration policy before deployment; browser-based cluster management does not replace the physical connections between switches.
WS-C3550-12T is retired, and Cisco no longer supports the Catalyst 3550 hardware family. An ORM order does not restore manufacturer support. Treat this model as legacy equipment when reviewing maintenance requirements, and keep reseller coverage separate from any proposed Cisco service contract for the installation.
ORM Systems offers WS-C3550-12T new sealed with up to a 3-year extended warranty or certified refurbished with up to 1 year. Both conditions include 30-day returns; terms apply. Cisco's original limited lifetime hardware warranty is no longer active because the Catalyst 3550 is retired and Cisco service has ended.
WS-C3550-12T ships with IP Services, formerly the Enhanced Multilayer Image or EMI, for hardware-based IP unicast and multicast routing. This Gigabit model does not need the IP Base-to-IP Services upgrade used by standard-image Fast Ethernet variants. Confirm the installed image and software entitlement when ordering previously owned hardware.
WS-C3550-12T uses two fixed Gigabit Ethernet GBIC interfaces rather than SFP cages. WS-G5484= provides a multimode fiber interface, while WS-G5486= supports single-mode or multimode fiber. Match the GBIC, fiber type and remote interface, and specify the required accessory PIDs separately in the purchase order.
Catalyst 3550 supports nine-switch GigaStack daisy chains using WS-X3500-XL. WS-X3500-XL includes a 50 cm cable; daisy-chain bandwidth is 1 Gbps, while a point-to-point connection supports 2 Gbps. CMS separately manages sixteen switches, so management-cluster size and physical stacking size are different limits to check when ordering.
Yes, WS-C3550-12T performs Layer 3 routing with IP Services, including Static, RIPv1, RIPv2, OSPF, IGRP, EIGRP and BGP. PIM-SM and PIM-DM provide multicast routing. Protocol support and hardware route scale are separate checks; size the intended configuration and validate the installed software during acceptance testing.
No, WS-C3550-12T does not supply PoE or inline power on its ten copper access ports. A network connection to a phone or access point therefore does not power that endpoint. Specify separate endpoint power equipment when retaining this model, rather than assigning a PoE budget to the switch.
WS-C3550-12T has ten copper Gigabit ports and two GBIC interfaces, whereas WS-C3550-12G has two copper Gigabit ports and ten GBIC interfaces. Both models are discontinued. For installed-base matching, the former fits copper-oriented connections, while the latter matches a configuration needing a greater number of fiber interfaces.
WS-C3550-12T includes IP Services, while WS-C3550-24-SMI originally includes the standard image, now called IP Base. IP Services adds the richer routing feature set. Both models are discontinued; the former matches a legacy full-routing Gigabit configuration, while the latter matches an existing standard-image Fast Ethernet installation.
WS-C3550-12T provides ten Gigabit copper access ports, whereas WS-C3550-48-EMI provides forty-eight 10/100 copper access ports. Both models are discontinued and include the enhanced routing image. The former matches lower-density Gigabit connections; the latter matches a legacy installation whose requirement is a larger number of Fast Ethernet connections.
