WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI is a managed Layer 2+ fiber access switch with 24 fixed 100BASE-FX ports for 100 Mbps multimode connections. Two built-in GBIC-based Gigabit Ethernet uplink slots provide the uplink architecture; the fiber access interfaces do not supply endpoint power. The Catalyst 3550 uses a full-width 1U rack chassis and the Standard Multilayer Software Image, subsequently named IP Base, for enterprise access networks retaining Fast Ethernet fiber endpoints. Its interface layout distinguishes it from copper-access configurations in the same family. WS-C3550-24PWR-SMI is the powered-copper sibling, providing inline power through copper access ports instead of fixed fiber connections. For an installed fiber network, the physical interface format remains a separate selection requirement from the software feature set.

8.8 Gbps switching capacity defines the hardware switching envelope. 6.6 Mpps forwarding for 64-byte packets supplies the small-packet performance figure for traffic sizing. Static / RIP routing provides the basic IP routing functions of the supplied software image rather than the full advanced dynamic routing feature set. WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI carries 64 MB DRAM and 16 MB flash for software execution and image storage. An 8000-entry MAC address capacity sets the address-learning limit, while the hardware supports 16000 unicast routes. Browser-based Cisco Cluster Management Suite provides graphical configuration, and the Cisco IOS CLI supplies console-based administration. Telnet and SNMP support in-band administration and monitoring; SSH requires a cryptographic software image. These management paths must be matched to the installed image when defining acceptance requirements. 85W maximum power consumption provides the chassis figure for electrical provisioning; external backup power is separate from an internally redundant power-supply arrangement.
WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI is offered new sealed with up to a 3-year extended warranty or certified refurbished with up to 1 year; both conditions include 30-day returns, terms apply. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, rated-speed links on every port, clean boot, and module bay recognition, with firmware verified and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify the condition, required software entitlement, and accessory part numbers on the PO; Cisco hardware warranty and service ended May 2, 2011. For enterprise and volume orders, POs are accepted, government Net-30 is available, and RMA with advance replacement is supported across UK / EU / US / MEA.

When an existing branch retains multimode fiber access cabling, MT-RJ connectors are a specific compatibility requirement on this model. Compare endpoint interfaces and patch-panel terminations with the installed fiber runs rather than treating the chassis as a copper-access replacement. Specify matching patch leads and the chosen uplink transceiver part numbers before issuing the purchase order.
When a lab must reproduce an installed switch's traffic behavior before a replacement handover, the shared 2 MB packet buffer is part of the hardware profile being retained. Include representative traffic bursts in acceptance testing and identify the existing configuration and required software entitlement before ordering the staging unit.
Native Gigabit fiber access
The fixed access interfaces operate at 100 Mbps. Current C9300-24S provides 24 Gigabit SFP downlinks, requiring appropriate transceivers rather than reuse of the older fixed optical interfaces.
PoE-powered endpoint access
WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI does not supply endpoint power through its fiber access ports. An installation requiring Ethernet-delivered power for phones or access points cannot use this chassis as that power source.
Active Cisco hardware support
Cisco hardware support ended May 2, 2011. A deployment requiring current Cisco hardware service should use a current model; C9300-24S provides 24 Gigabit SFP access ports.

WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI identifies a Catalyst 3550 switch with 24 100BASE-FX multimode fiber ports and Standard Multilayer Software Image. WS-C3550 identifies the family, 24 the access-port count, FX the fiber interface, and SMI the software image. Two GBIC-based Gigabit Ethernet uplinks complete the configuration.
Catalyst 3550 management uses Cisco Cluster Management Suite through a web browser, Cisco IOS CLI through console or Telnet, and SSH with a cryptographic software image. SNMPv1 / SNMPv2c / SNMPv3 and CiscoWorks provide additional management paths. Verify the installed image before making encrypted remote access an acceptance requirement.
WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI is discontinued: Cisco end of sale was May 2, 2006, and hardware support ended May 2, 2011. Remaining new sealed or refurbished inventory does not change those milestones. Plan legacy replacement orders without depending on active Cisco hardware service, and specify the required inventory condition separately.
WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI is offered by ORM Systems new sealed with up to a 3-year extended warranty or certified refurbished with up to 1 year. Both conditions have 30-day returns; terms apply. Cisco's original limited lifetime hardware warranty ended with support on May 2, 2011. Refurbished managed units are inspected, bench-tested, firmware verified, and factory-default wiped.
WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI ships with Standard Multilayer Software Image, subsequently named IP Base, for static and RIP routing. Enhanced Multilayer Software Image, subsequently named IP Services, adds advanced IP unicast and multicast routing. CD-3550-EMI= is the EMI upgrade kit for this model; establish software entitlement separately from the hardware condition.
WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI uses 1G GBIC transceivers in two built-in uplink slots, not SFP modules. WS-G5484= provides 1000BASE-SX, WS-G5486= provides 1000BASE-LX/LH, WS-G5487= provides 1000BASE-ZX, and WS-G5483= provides 1000BASE-T. Select the transceiver for the link medium, connector, required distance, and opposite endpoint before ordering.
WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI supports a nine-member GigaStack daisy chain sharing 1 Gbps; a point-to-point arrangement provides 2 Gbps. WS-X3500-XL includes the GigaStack GBIC and a 50 cm cable, while CAB-GS-1M supplies a longer cable option. Plan the GBIC slot assignments for stacking and uplinks together.
WS-C3550-24PWR-SMI supplies inline power through 24 copper 10/100 ports, while WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI provides unpowered fiber access. Both models are discontinued. The powered model matches legacy powered-copper installations; the fiber model matches installed 100BASE-FX links where endpoint power is supplied separately. Hardware condition does not change the port medium.
WS-C3550-24-EMI includes Enhanced Multilayer Software Image, whereas WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI includes Standard Multilayer Software Image. Both are discontinued, and the EMI model has copper rather than fiber access ports. The EMI model matches legacy advanced-routing requirements on copper; the fiber SMI model matches basic static or RIP routing over fiber.
C9300-24S provides 24 Gigabit SFP downlinks, while WS-C3550-24-FX-SMI provides 24 fixed 100BASE-FX downlinks. Current C9300-24S matches a migration to Gigabit fiber; the retired fiber model preserves the existing Fast Ethernet interface format. Check optics and cabling rather than assuming the older fixed optical interfaces transfer unchanged.
