WS-C3550-24-EMI is a managed Layer 3 access switch with 24 RJ-45 ports operating at 10/100 Mbps and two fixed Gigabit Ethernet GBIC uplink slots. The access ports carry data without supplying PoE, while the uplink slots accept compatible copper or fiber GBICs rather than removable network cards. The Catalyst 3550 occupies 1U and includes the Enhanced Multilayer Software Image, subsequently named IP Services. This configuration combines Ethernet switching with hardware-based IP routing for enterprise wiring closets. WS-C3550-24PWR-EMI is the discontinued inline-power sibling; the model here requires independently powered endpoints. The 24-port Fast Ethernet multilayer switch serves legacy access connections where the original interface speeds and software feature set remain purchase requirements.

8.8 Gbps switching capacity supports local switching, and 6.6 Mpps forwarding handles 64-byte packets. OSPF and EIGRP provide dynamic unicast routing, while PIM-SM, PIM-DM and PIM-SD support multicast routing. The routing architecture uses Cisco Express Forwarding, with hardware resources supporting 16000 unicast routes and 8000 MAC addresses. WS-C3550-24-EMI contains 64 MB of DRAM, 16 MB of flash and 2 MB of shared packet memory. Routed access control lists and HSRP belong to the enhanced software feature set. Management includes a console CLI, Telnet, browser-based Cisco CMS and SNMPv1/SNMPv2c; SSH requires a cryptographic software image. Environmental status commands expose fan, temperature and power conditions for operational checks. The Cisco IOS configuration also supports dynamic ARP inspection under IP Services, allowing inspection policies to distinguish trusted interfaces from ports whose address bindings must be verified before traffic is forwarded.
New sealed and certified refurbished WS-C3550-24-EMI units are offered with ORM warranties of up to 3 years extended for new hardware and up to 1 year for certified refurbished hardware; returns are available for 30 days on either condition, with terms applying. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, every port linking at rated speed, clean boot, PSU status and fan status; firmware is verified and the configuration is wiped to factory default. Specify condition, quantity and required accessory PIDs before submitting the PO. Enterprise and volume requirements can use PO acceptance, government Net-30 terms and RMA with advance replacement across UK, EU, US and MEA regional stock and RMA coverage.

A staging environment that reproduces older Ethernet configurations needs the original frame-size behavior, not merely matching interface connectors. The configurable MTU ceiling is 1546 bytes, so jumbo-frame exercises exceed the hardware limit. Before the PO, specify the intended test configuration and confirm that its required MTU stays within that ceiling.
An existing estate using Cisco CMS can include geographically separated switches in a management cluster of 16 members through one IP address. That management grouping is distinct from physical interconnection bandwidth. Before ordering additional units, specify the intended command-switch role and check cluster membership against the 16-member limit.
A routed customer-edge deployment that separates routing domains can use multi-VRF CE with the IP Services image. Fast Ethernet models have a maximum of 8000 routes within a VRF. Before the PO, specify the required routing domains and check each domain's route count against that individual limit.
PoE-powered phones or access points
WS-C3550-24-EMI supplies no inline power on its access ports. Connected phones and access points therefore need independent power rather than endpoint power from this model.
10G uplinks to distribution
WS-C3550-24-EMI has Gigabit Ethernet GBIC uplink slots, not 10G interfaces. A deployment requiring a native 10G distribution connection exceeds this model's uplink capability.
9000-byte jumbo frame transport
WS-C3550-24-EMI supports a configurable MTU of 1546 bytes. A requirement to transport 9000-byte packets exceeds that limit and cannot be satisfied by its MTU configuration.
Active Cisco hardware support coverage
Cisco hardware support for the Catalyst 3550 ended May 2, 2011. A purchase requiring active Cisco hardware support cannot be fulfilled with this discontinued series.

WS-C3550-24-EMI identifies a Catalyst 3550 with 24 Fast Ethernet access ports and the Enhanced Multilayer Software Image. WS-C3550 is the model prefix, 24 identifies the access-port count, and EMI identifies the factory software tier. The configuration also includes two Gigabit Ethernet GBIC uplink slots.
The Catalyst 3550 supports browser-based Cisco CMS, web-based Express Setup, a console CLI, Telnet, SSH with a cryptographic image, and SNMPv1/SNMPv2c management. SSH availability depends on the installed encrypted software image. CiscoWorks can also provide network management, while the CLI exposes detailed configuration and environmental status commands.
WS-C3550-24-EMI belongs to the discontinued Catalyst 3550 hardware series, which reached end-of-sale on May 2, 2006, and end of support on May 2, 2011. Cisco hardware service has ended. A reseller purchase does not reopen those milestones or restore Cisco support eligibility for the retired hardware.
WS-C3550-24-EMI is offered new sealed or certified refurbished, with ORM warranties of up to 3 years extended for new units and up to 1 year for refurbished units. Returns are available for 30 days on either condition; terms apply. Cisco's original limited lifetime hardware warranty ended with support on May 2, 2011.
WS-C3550-24-EMI includes EMI, subsequently named IP Services, rather than the standard SMI/IP Base configuration. The family also supports an SMI-to-EMI upgrade using CD-3550-EMI=. An installed enhanced image does not itself establish entitlement, and upgrading software does not alter the factory hardware model number.
WS-C3550-24-EMI is a replacement for WS-C3524-XL-EN in the Catalyst 3524 XL transition. The migration retains a 24-port 10/100 access configuration with two Gigabit Ethernet uplinks while adding the enhanced multilayer software configuration. The replacement itself is now discontinued and is not an active-support purchase.
WS-C3550-24PWR-EMI supplies inline power on 24 Fast Ethernet ports, whereas WS-C3550-24-EMI has non-PoE access ports. Both configurations include two Gigabit Ethernet GBIC uplink slots and enhanced software. Within this discontinued family, the PWR variant addresses powered legacy endpoints; the non-PoE model addresses independently powered connections.
WS-C3550-24-EMI includes EMI/IP Services, while WS-C3550-24-SMI includes SMI/IP Base as its factory software configuration. Their access-port count and GBIC uplink arrangement match. For legacy requirements, EMI provides the enhanced routing feature set; SMI addresses the standard software configuration unless separately upgraded with the appropriate entitlement.
WS-C3550-48-EMI has 48 Fast Ethernet access ports, compared with 24 on WS-C3550-24-EMI. Both configurations retain two Gigabit Ethernet GBIC uplink slots and enhanced software. In this discontinued family, the 48-port model addresses higher connection counts, while the 24-port model matches smaller legacy access requirements.
WS-C3550-24-EMI uses Gigabit Ethernet GBICs, including WS-G5483 for copper, WS-G5484 for 1000BASE-SX, WS-G5486 for 1000BASE-LX/LH and WS-G5487 for 1000BASE-ZX. Fiber GBICs use SC connections. Select the transceiver against the installed media and required link reach rather than treating an SFP as an interchangeable uplink part.
Catalyst 3550 GigaStack connects nine switches in a daisy-chain configuration with 1 Gbps shared bandwidth. GigaStack uses WS-X3500-XL with CAB-GS-50CM or CAB-GS-1M. The interconnection occupies a GBIC slot, so specify the interconnect parts and remaining uplink requirements together when assembling the purchase order.
WS-C3550-24-EMI supports enhanced IP routing, including OSPF, EIGRP, IGRP and BGP4, alongside static routing and RIP. Multicast routing includes PIM-SM, PIM-DM and PIM-SD. The enhanced image also supports HSRP and routed access control lists; installed software and entitlement must match the required enhanced feature set.
No, WS-C3550-24-EMI does not provide PoE or legacy inline power on its access ports. The 24 RJ-45 connections carry 10/100 Mbps data, while connected equipment needs independent power. A powered phone or access point cannot obtain operating power directly from this model's access-port connection.
WS-C3550-24-EMI supports a maximum configurable MTU of 1546 bytes, not a 9000-byte jumbo MTU. The Ethernet frame includes additional header and checksum bytes beyond that setting. MTU configuration changes require a reload, so include the intended frame size and restart procedure in the staging plan.
