Its uplinks use a modular bay rather than fixed fiber ports, and the base configuration does not include a network module. The full-width 1U chassis belongs to the Cisco Catalyst 3850 family and carries the IP Base feature set for wired endpoints, IP phones and compatible access points. The discontinued WS-C3850-48UW-S sibling changes the endpoint-power class to UPOE while retaining the access point license bundle. 176 Gbps switching capacity defines the fabric ceiling when sizing traffic between attached endpoints and the distribution connection. Static routing, RIPv1, RIPv2, RIPng, EIGRP Stub and routed-access OSPF cover the IP Base routing role; full OSPF, BGPv4 and IS-ISv4 are not included in this tier. WS-C3850-48W-S provides 4 GB of DRAM and 2 GB of flash for the operating image and local configuration. Hardware scale includes 32000 MAC addresses and 24000 IPv4 routes, with the latter encompassing ARP plus learned routes. LACP supports aggregated Ethernet links, while MSTP and PVRST+ provide spanning-tree control. Administrative access uses the CLI, with SNMP available for monitoring and Cisco Prime Infrastructure for combined wired-and-wireless management. The 48 copper access ports operate at 10/100/1000 Mbps, not 2.5G or 5G. Multigigabit endpoints cannot negotiate above 1G on this model, regardless of uplink module choice.

WS-C3850-48W-S identifies a Catalyst 3850 48-port PoE bundle with five access point licenses and IP Base software. WS-C3850 identifies the switch family, 48 identifies the access-port count, W identifies the wireless-license bundle, and S identifies IP Base. Uplink connectivity is selected through a separate network module.
WS-C3850-48W-S is managed through the Cisco IOS XE CLI using a console connection, SSH or Telnet, with SNMP and Cisco Prime Infrastructure available for network management. Cisco DNA Center provides the SD-Access automation and assurance path when the required subscription and deployment components are present.
WS-C3850-48W-S is discontinued, with end of sale on October 30, 2020, and Cisco support ending October 31, 2025. Cisco service is no longer available for this model. C9300-48P-A is the current migration replacement, while the discontinued bundle remains a legacy hardware choice rather than a supported Cisco purchase.

Compatible data-stacking cable spares are STACK-T1-50CM=, STACK-T1-1M= and STACK-T1-3M=. StackPower uses different connectors and cables, so a data-stacking cable order does not also supply the power-sharing connections between chassis.

Full OSPF, full EIGRP, BGPv4 and IS-ISv4 require IP Services on this generation. Distinguish the installed software entitlement from hardware route capacity when matching an existing routed-access configuration.
Catalyst 3850 copper models can add a second internal supply, including PWR-C1-715WAC= or PWR-C1-1100WAC=, rather than relying only on external redundancy. The standard chassis has two supply bays but ships with one installed supply. Specify the additional supply separately when the order requires two installed power modules.
176 Gbps switching capacity is available on WS-C3850-48W-S as a 48-port Gigabit Ethernet Catalyst 3850 configuration. The modular uplink bay allows uplink selection to match the distribution connection. Specify the uplink module explicitly rather than assuming the capacity rating means that fiber uplink ports are already installed.
The Catalyst 3850 48-port PoE bundle uses a full-width 1U rack chassis, with C3850-RAC-KIT= available as the rack-mount kit. C3850-4PT-KIT= supplies extension rails and brackets for four-point mounting. Confirm the mounting arrangement and required kit on the purchase order rather than assuming a spare kit is included.
WS-C3850-48UW-S is a UPOE bundle, whereas WS-C3850-48W-S is the PoE bundle; both include five access point licenses and IP Base. The UPOE version targets endpoints requiring the higher-power UPOE class. Both models are discontinued: the PoE bundle suits legacy PoE replacements, while the UPOE bundle suits legacy UPOE replacements.
WS-C3850-48P-E carries IP Services, whereas WS-C3850-48W-S carries IP Base. IP Services adds full OSPF, full EIGRP, BGPv4 and IS-ISv4 beyond the routed-access feature set. Both switches are discontinued; the IP Base bundle suits legacy routed-access requirements, while the IP Services model suits legacy configurations needing those additional routing protocols.
C9300-48P-A is the current migration replacement for WS-C3850-48W-S, whose Cisco support ended October 31, 2025. Both are 48-port PoE access choices, but the older bundle belongs to a retired generation. The discontinued bundle fits legacy sparing; the replacement fits purchases that require the current Cisco migration model.
