WS-C3850-24XS-S is a Layer 3 enterprise fiber access and aggregation switch with 24 fixed 1/10G SFP+ ports and IP Base software. The Catalyst 3850 chassis occupies one rack unit and provides optical connections without PoE output. An empty modular uplink bay accepts C3850-NM-4-10G or C3850-NM-8-10G for SFP+ expansion and C3850-NM-2-40G for QSFP+ connections; the base configuration includes no uplink module. The discontinued WS-C3850-24XS-E has the same fixed port configuration but includes IP Services for broader routing requirements. Cisco Catalyst 3850 Series Switches can aggregate fiber links from smaller access switches in branch networks, including EMI-sensitive environments. This 24-port 10G fiber switch separates fixed connectivity from removable uplink expansion, so the purchase configuration needs to distinguish the chassis from additional uplink hardware.

640 Gbps maximum switching capacity provides the bandwidth ceiling for configurations using supported uplink expansion. 454.55 Mpps forwarding rate supplies the packet-processing figure for traffic sizing. Static routing, RIPv1, RIPv2, RIPng, EIGRP Stub, routed-access OSPF, and PBR are available under the supplied feature set; full OSPF, EIGRP, BGPv4, and IS-ISv4 require IP Services. WS-C3850-24XS-S combines 4 GB of DRAM with 4 GB of flash for runtime operation and local software storage. A 32000-entry MAC table and 24000 IPv4 entries, including ARP and learned routes, establish hardware scale; these totals remain separate from software-tier restrictions. The UADP ASIC provides the hardware foundation for forwarding and QoS. Console CLI, remote CLI, SNMP, and Cisco Prime Infrastructure provide configuration and monitoring paths. SSH and cryptographic SNMPv3 require the appropriate cryptographic software image rather than being independent of image selection.
