ESW-520-24-K9 is a managed Layer 2 switch with 24 Fast Ethernet access ports and four fixed Gigabit uplink connections. Two uplinks are dedicated copper ports; the other two are combo connections that each accept either copper or an SFP fiber connection, with one medium active at a time. The access ports do not supply PoE, so attached devices need their own power. The ESW 500 family belongs to the Cisco Small Business Pro portfolio and serves small-business networks connecting computers, printers and other Ethernet endpoints. Its full-width chassis occupies one rack unit. The discontinued ESW-520-24P-K9 is the closest powered sibling, adding PoE to its access ports rather than changing their Fast Ethernet speed.

12.8 Gbps switching capacity defines the aggregate switching ceiling, while 9.5 Mpps forwarding applies to 64-byte packets. STP, RSTP and MSTP provide spanning-tree options for networks with redundant Ethernet paths; LACP supports link aggregation between compatible devices. VLAN segmentation separates traffic groups, but this remains a Layer 2 switch rather than an inter-VLAN router. ESW-520-24-K9 runs VxWorks instead of Cisco IOS, which matters when matching existing administration procedures. Configuration uses the embedded browser utility or Cisco Configuration Assistant, not an IOS-style command-line interface. SNMP versions 1, 2c and 3 support monitoring, and port mirroring provides a way to send traffic to an analyzer.
Specify ESW-520-24-K9 in new sealed or certified refurbished condition and identify the required quantity on the purchase order. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, clean boot, rated-speed links on every port, optics bay recognition, PSU status and fan status; firmware is verified and configurations are wiped to factory default. ORM Systems provides up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units, up to 1 year on certified refurbished units, and 30-day returns on every condition, terms apply. Enterprise and volume orders can use PO acceptance, Net-30 for government, and regional stock/RMA coverage across the UK, EU, US and MEA.

When replacing an unmanaged branch switch, existing voice and data policies need to be translated into managed port settings. Four hardware priority queues and Cisco Smartports roles provide configuration choices for different endpoint types. Before the PO, specify the required port roles, VLAN assignments and traffic-priority policy.
Before refreshing firmware on an existing installation, check the boot-code dependency rather than scheduling only an application-image update. Firmware 2.1.16 requires boot version 1.0.0.4 on the 24-port models, and Cisco Configuration Assistant does not upgrade boot code. Specify a staged boot-code and firmware verification step before the PO.
PoE power for connected endpoints
ESW-520-24-K9 supplies no PoE output. Phones, cameras or access points that depend on Ethernet-delivered power require separate endpoint power or a switch with powered access ports.
Gigabit speed on every access port
ESW-520-24-K9 limits its 24 access ports to 10/100 Mbps. The Gigabit uplinks do not increase endpoint-port speed; choose hardware with native Gigabit access ports.
Command-line configuration and automation
The ESW 500 family does not provide a configuration CLI. Administration workflows that require command-line configuration need hardware with an explicitly supported CLI.

ESW-520-24-K9 identifies an ESW 500 managed switch with 24 non-PoE 10/100 access ports and four Gigabit expansion connections. ESW-520 identifies the Fast Ethernet model group, 24 identifies the access-port count, and K9 remains part of the complete ordering identifier used to specify this model.
ESW-520-24-K9 is configured through its embedded HTTP/HTTPS browser utility or Cisco Configuration Assistant, not a configuration CLI. Remote monitoring is available through those interfaces and SNMP-capable applications using read-only MIBs. Administration procedures should therefore match the graphical tools rather than assume Cisco IOS command compatibility.
ESW-520-24-K9 belongs to the retired ESW 500 family, and Cisco support has ended. Remaining hardware should be evaluated as legacy equipment rather than an actively supported Cisco purchase. Condition selection does not change that manufacturer-support status, so replacement stock and configuration recovery need separate consideration.
New sealed and certified refurbished ESW-520-24-K9 units are offered with ORM warranties: up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for certified refurbished units. Both conditions have 30-day returns, terms apply. Cisco's original enhanced 5-year hardware warranty is no longer active because manufacturer support has ended.
ESW-520-24P-K9 adds PoE on its 24 Fast Ethernet access ports, whereas ESW-520-24-K9 does not supply endpoint power. Both models are discontinued. For legacy installations, the non-PoE model matches separately powered endpoints; the P variant addresses devices that require power from the switch.
ESW-540-24-K9 has 24 Gigabit Ethernet access ports, while ESW-520-24-K9 has 24 Fast Ethernet access ports. Both are discontinued ESW 500 models. The former matches legacy requirements for Gigabit endpoint links; the latter fits an existing installation whose access connections remain at 10/100 Mbps.
ESW-520-48-K9 provides 48 Fast Ethernet access ports instead of the 24 on ESW-520-24-K9. Both models are discontinued. The larger model addresses an existing installation requiring more endpoint connections in one chassis; the smaller model matches a legacy replacement requirement with fewer access connections.
ESW-520-24-K9 has four Gigabit uplink connections: two dedicated copper ports and two copper/SFP combo ports. Each combo connection permits only one medium to operate at a time. The fiber cages therefore do not add two extra simultaneous links beyond the four available uplink connections.
Yes, ESW-520-24-K9 can connect to the external RPS1000 redundant power supply alongside its internal AC supply. That arrangement is external power backup, not a second internal PSU module. Specify RPS1000 explicitly when matching an existing redundant-power installation rather than assuming the switch contains dual supplies.
The ESW 500 family runs VxWorks rather than Cisco IOS. Existing IOS configurations and command-line procedures should not be treated as interchangeable with this switch's graphical administration workflow. Configuration uses the embedded switch utility or Cisco Configuration Assistant, so operating procedures need to match those interfaces.
