Copper and Fiber Access for Small Business Networks

ESW-540-24P-K9 combines Gigabit Ethernet connectivity and standards-based PoE in a managed Layer 2 rack-mount switch. The ESW 500 chassis provides 20 dedicated copper access ports plus four fixed Gigabit combo connections, each selecting its copper interface or SFP cage. These shared connections do not add four independent links to the copper-port total. All 24 copper interfaces can supply endpoint power within the shared allocation. Phones, wireless access points, video cameras, PCs, and printers can connect to the small-business access network. The discontinued ESW-540-24-K9 offers the same copper-port density without PoE. This model belongs to a retired family, so maintaining an installed network must be distinguished from purchasing equipment with current Cisco service.

Technical Details

48 Gbps switching capacity supports the Gigabit interfaces, while 35.7 Mpps forwarding performance specifies packet handling with 64-byte frames. Spanning Tree, Rapid Spanning Tree, and Multiple Spanning Tree provide loop-control options for redundant connections. LACP supports eight aggregation groups and eight ports per group, subject to the available interfaces. Four hardware queues combine priority queuing with weighted round-robin scheduling to distinguish delay-sensitive traffic from other flows. ESW-540-24P-K9 supports port mirroring for packet analysis and RMON for history, statistics, alarms, and events. Cisco Small Business Pro management includes browser-based HTTP/HTTPS configuration and Cisco Configuration Assistant rather than a Cisco IOS configuration CLI. SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3 provide network-management integration. Access control lists filter traffic using Layer 2, Layer 3, or Layer 4 parameters; filtering does not make the chassis a routed-access switch.

Ordering

ORM Systems offers ESW-540-24P-K9 new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units, up to 1 year on certified refurbished units, and 30-day returns on either condition; terms apply. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested, with PoE output verified under load on every powered port, optics bay recognition checked, firmware verified, and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify condition and quantity on the PO; Cisco's original enhanced 5-year limited hardware warranty has ended with manufacturer support. Enterprise and volume orders are supported with PO acceptance, Net-30 for government, and RMA with advance replacement, with regional stock and RMA across the UK, EU, US, and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Shared endpoint power allocation

The endpoint power plan must fit 280W: 24 × 15.4W = 369.6W. Allocate device loads before ordering because maximum per-port output is not simultaneously available across every copper connection.

Fiber transceiver selection

Fiber connections require compatible optics: MGBSX1 supports multimode Gigabit Ethernet, while MGBLX1 supports single-mode Gigabit Ethernet. Specify MGBSX1 or MGBLX1 quantities against the installed fiber and the intended link endpoints.

Best For

Endpoint Power Changes

An endpoint replacement project can change the power mix even when the connection count stays unchanged. A 24-device mix drawing less than 11W per device is one supported planning example. Collect each phone, camera, or access point's requirements and specify the intended load mix before the PO.

Replacement Hardware Staging

For replacement hardware staged before a maintenance window, two firmware images allow a separate image to be retained during upgrade work. Keep the intended production settings separate from the staging configuration, and identify which image must boot. Specify the required firmware and boot-image selection before the PO.

Not Suitable If

Powered endpoints requiring more than 15.4W

The powered copper interfaces stop at 15.4W per port and cannot supply higher-draw devices. Endpoint requirements above that limit cannot be met by this switch.

10G uplinks to distribution

The built-in uplink connections top out at 1G, not 10G. A distribution design requiring 10G links therefore needs different switching hardware rather than different SFP transceivers.

Configuration through a Cisco IOS CLI

The ESW 500 series does not run Cisco IOS and does not provide a configuration CLI. Existing command-line deployment procedures cannot be applied to this switch.

Current Cisco manufacturer support

The ESW 500 series is retired and no longer receives Cisco service. A purchase requiring an active Cisco support entitlement cannot be fulfilled by this model.

Questions & Answers

What does the ESW-540-24P-K9 part number mean?

ESW-540-24P-K9 identifies an ESW 500 Gigabit Ethernet PoE model: ESW identifies the switch family, 540 identifies the Gigabit model group, 24 denotes the copper-port count, and P denotes PoE. Order the complete PID, including K9, to retain the exact product identity.

How is the Cisco ESW 500 series managed?

The ESW 500 series is configured through its embedded HTTP/HTTPS web interface or Cisco Configuration Assistant; SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3 support network management. The series does not use a Cisco IOS configuration CLI, so command-line configuration templates are not interchangeable.

Is ESW-540-24P-K9 still supported by Cisco?

ESW-540-24P-K9 belongs to the retired ESW 500 series, and Cisco service has ended. New sealed condition does not restart manufacturer support. For an order intended to maintain existing equipment, distinguish the hardware condition from the support arrangements supplied by the seller.

What conditions and warranty does ORM Systems offer for ESW-540-24P-K9?

ORM Systems offers new sealed and certified refurbished ESW-540-24P-K9 units, with up to a 3-year extended warranty for new equipment and up to 1 year for certified refurbished equipment. Both conditions include 30-day returns; terms apply. Cisco's original enhanced 5-year limited hardware warranty has ended with manufacturer support.

How much PoE power does ESW-540-24P-K9 provide?

ESW-540-24P-K9 shares 280W across its powered copper interfaces and supplies a maximum of 15.4W per port under IEEE 802.3af. Full per-port output is not available on every copper interface simultaneously. Size the actual endpoint mix against the shared budget before allocating powered connections.

How many independent ports does ESW-540-24P-K9 have?

ESW-540-24P-K9 has 24 copper Gigabit interfaces, including four shared copper/SFP combo connections, leaving 20 dedicated copper access ports. Each combo connection activates copper or fiber, not both simultaneously. Four populated SFP cages therefore do not create four additional independent switch ports.

What power supply and redundancy does ESW-540-24P-K9 use?

ESW-540-24P-K9 uses an internal universal AC supply accepting 100-240V, with an external -48V DC connector for RPS1000 backup power. RPS1000 is an external accessory, not a second internal supply module. Specify external backup-power requirements separately from the switch condition and quantity.

Can the Cisco ESW 500 series provide routed access?

The ESW 500 series provides Layer 2 switching rather than routed access. VLAN separation and traffic filtering do not turn the switch into an inter-VLAN router. Keep routing on a separate device, and do not specify this model for a routed access requirement.

What rack space does the ESW 500 24-port chassis require?

The ESW 500 24-port chassis is a rack-mount 1U unit measuring 440 mm wide, 375 mm deep, and 44 mm high. The original package includes mounting hardware. Specify rack hardware requirements and cable clearance when preparing the equipment order.

What is the difference between ESW-540-24P-K9 and ESW-540-24-K9?

ESW-540-24P-K9 supplies PoE, while ESW-540-24-K9 does not; both have 24 copper Gigabit interfaces and four shared SFP connections. Both models are discontinued. The PoE version serves powered endpoints; the non-PoE version fits an existing installation whose endpoints receive power separately.

What is the difference between ESW-540-24P-K9 and ESW-540-8P-K9?

ESW-540-24P-K9 uses an internal AC supply, while ESW-540-8P-K9 uses an external 150W AC adapter. Both models are discontinued. The larger model fits an installed rack-based power arrangement; the eight-port model fits an existing arrangement that specifically requires its external adapter.

What is the difference between ESW-540-24P-K9 and ESW-540-48-K9?

ESW-540-48-K9 provides 48 copper Gigabit interfaces, compared with 24 on ESW-540-24P-K9; each has four shared SFP connections. Both models are discontinued, and the 48-port model is non-PoE. Existing installations needing more unpowered connections differ from those needing the 24-port model's endpoint power.
