ESW-540-24-K9 provides managed Layer 2 Gigabit Ethernet switching without PoE for small-business access networks. Twenty dedicated copper connections accompany four shared Gigabit copper/SFP interfaces, with one medium active per pair. The fixed uplink architecture accepts compatible SFP transceivers rather than removable network cards and does not provide 10G connectivity. A full-width 1U chassis places this ESW 500 Series model in an equipment rack rather than the compact desktop category. The Cisco Small Business Pro switch connects computers, printers, servers, and separately powered network devices. ESW-540-24P-K9, also discontinued, adds PoE for endpoints requiring power over their Ethernet connections. Reserve the shared interfaces for the intended copper or fiber connections before finalizing the endpoint inventory.

48 Gbps switching capacity sets the switching-fabric limit when sizing aggregate traffic across active interfaces. 35.7 Mpps forwarding with 64-byte packets provides a separate small-packet performance measure for comparing workloads rather than relying on bandwidth alone. STP, RSTP, and MSTP provide loop-control options, so the spanning-tree mode must match the surrounding network. LACP supports eight aggregation groups with eight ports per group, allowing physical connections to form logical links subject to peer configuration. Four hardware queues support priority queuing and weighted round-robin scheduling to separate traffic classes. IGMP snooping versions 1 and 2 supports 256 multicast groups and restricts multicast forwarding to requesting receivers. ESW-540-24-K9 runs VxWorks rather than Cisco IOS and does not provide a Cisco IOS CLI for administration. Two fans provide active cooling, so preserve airflow around the chassis. Port mirroring provides a traffic-analysis connection when investigating application behavior or link problems.
Order ESW-540-24-K9 from ORM Systems in new sealed or certified refurbished condition, specifying the required condition and quantity on the PO. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, every port linking at rated speed, clean boot, optics bay recognition, PSU status, and fan status. ORM's warranty is up to 3-year extended for new units and up to 1 year for certified refurbished units, with 30-day returns on every condition; terms apply. Enterprise and volume orders support PO acceptance, Net-30 for government, and RMA with advance replacement across the UK, EU, US, and MEA stock/RMA regions.

When an unmanaged office LAN needs authenticated access, the ESW 500 Series supports IEEE 802.1X with RADIUS and guest VLAN handling. Access control lists can filter or rate-limit traffic using Layer 2, Layer 3, or Layer 4 parameters. Specify authentication requirements and the intended access-control policy before the PO.
When staging a replacement before a maintenance window, dual firmware images retain an active and alternate software image on the device. Firmware transfers use the browser or TFTP, and configuration changes require a separate save operation. Confirm the required image and configuration handover requirements before placing the replacement order.
PoE power for attached endpoints
ESW-540-24-K9 does not supply Ethernet power. Phones, cameras, and access points require separate power arrangements; this model cannot replace a powered access switch.
10G uplinks to distribution
ESW-540-24-K9 provides Gigabit uplink interfaces only. The fixed copper/SFP connections cannot accept a 10G network card or provide a 10G fiber connection.
Cisco IOS command-line administration
ESW-540-24-K9 runs VxWorks and does not provide a Cisco IOS CLI. Existing command-line automation that depends on Cisco IOS cannot be applied to this model.
Ongoing Cisco manufacturer support
ESW-540-24-K9 belongs to the retired ESW 500 Series, and Cisco service has ended. A requirement for ongoing manufacturer support rules out this model.

ESW-540-24-K9 identifies a non-PoE Gigabit Ethernet switch in the ESW 500 Series. ESW names the family, 540 identifies the Gigabit variant, and 24 identifies the Ethernet connection count. Four SFP interfaces share copper connections, so the fiber cages are not four additional independent ports.
ESW-540-24-K9 is managed through its HTTP/HTTPS web utility or Cisco Configuration Assistant, with basic menu-based access through the serial console or Telnet. SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3 provide monitoring, including read-only MIB access. The console menu is not a Cisco IOS command-line interface.
ESW-540-24-K9 is retired, and Cisco no longer supports the ESW 500 Series. New sealed stock does not restart the manufacturer's product lifecycle. Existing installations therefore need a support and sparing plan that does not depend on renewed Cisco service or continuing manufacturer software maintenance.
ORM Systems offers ESW-540-24-K9 new sealed with up to 3-year extended coverage or certified refurbished with up to 1 year. Returns are 30 days for every condition; terms apply. Cisco's original enhanced 5-year hardware warranty is historical because the ESW 500 Series is retired and Cisco service has ended.
ESW-540-24-K9 has twenty-four copper connections, including four shared Gigabit copper/SFP pairs. Twenty copper ports remain independent of those pairs. Each shared pair operates as either copper or fiber, not both simultaneously, so fitting four optical transceivers does not create four additional independent switch connections.
ESW-540-24-K9 supports 1G fiber uplinks through its fixed SFP interfaces, including MGBSX1 for multimode fiber and MGBLX1 for single-mode fiber. MGBLX1 supports links up to 10 km. Choose MGBSX1 or MGBLX1 to match the installed fiber and remote interface; each copper/SFP pair uses one medium at a time.
ESW-540-24-K9 is a Layer 2 switch, not an inter-VLAN router. VLAN separation and traffic filtering remain switching functions on this model; ACL matching against IP or transport-layer information does not add a routing control plane. Specify a separate routing function when communication between VLANs is required.
ESW-540-24-K9 uses an internal universal AC supply and can connect to the external RPS1000 for backup power. RPS1000 supports the 24-port and 48-port ESW 500 models, but not the 8-port versions. External backup does not provide a second hot-swappable internal power module.
ESW 500 Series switches provide four hardware queues with priority queuing and weighted round-robin scheduling. Traffic classification can use port settings, VLAN priority, IP precedence, or DSCP. These controls distinguish delay-sensitive voice traffic from other traffic; queue and classification policies still need to match the application mix.
ESW-540-24P-K9 provides IEEE 802.3af PoE, whereas ESW-540-24-K9 provides data connections without endpoint power. Both are discontinued members of the ESW 500 Series. The powered variant serves phones or access points requiring Ethernet power; the non-PoE variant suits computers, printers, and other separately powered devices.
ESW-540-48-K9 has forty-eight Gigabit Ethernet connections, compared with twenty-four on ESW-540-24-K9. Both models are discontinued. The higher-density version serves a larger endpoint inventory in one chassis; the smaller version serves installations needing fewer connections. Shared copper/SFP interfaces remain alternative media connections rather than additional independent ports.
ESW-540-24-K9 offers 10/100/1000 Ethernet access, whereas ESW-520-24-K9 offers 10/100 Ethernet access. Both are discontinued ESW 500 models. The Gigabit version serves endpoints requiring 1 Gbps access links; the Fast Ethernet version corresponds to legacy installations whose endpoint links remain limited to 100 Mbps.
The ESW 500 Series succeeded the Cisco Catalyst Express 520 Series for small-business switching and integration with the Cisco Smart Business Communications System. The ESW family added an embedded browser-based configuration utility alongside Cisco Configuration Assistant. Both families are retired, so this relationship describes an earlier migration rather than a current supported upgrade.
