IEM-3400-8S is an eight-port Gigabit Ethernet SFP expansion module for Catalyst IE3400 Rugged industrial switches, not a standalone switch. Its fixed fiber interfaces add connections to an existing base system without adding another independently managed device. 27W of module power consumption must be included when sizing the complete assembly's supply, rather than counted as power available to attached devices. IEM-3400-8S also supports 100Mbps SFP operation for lower-speed industrial fiber endpoints. Host management includes WebUI, CLI through console, SSH or Telnet, SNMP, and Cisco Catalyst Center; CIP-based tools and PROFINET integrations provide additional industrial management paths. SGT/SGACL requires Network Advantage on the base, so the expansion hardware alone does not enable that policy feature. Enclosure design sets the operating temperature ceiling: 60°C in sealed cabinets, 70°C in vented cabinets with 0.2032 m/s airflow, or 75°C with a fan or blower providing at least 1.016 m/s airflow. The lower operating limit is -40°C. A 91 mm module width also needs to be allowed beside the host when planning the assembled enclosure.

Industrial cabinet expansion around an installed base switch requires a shutdown window before the module is attached. The expansion connector engages directly with the host, and installation uses four retaining screws. Include the planned outage, installation labor, and access to both sides of the assembly in the purchase scope.
Standardizing assemblies across industrial sites requires matching the installed base and enclosure layout, not just the number of fiber links. The assembled equipment needs 50.8 mm clearance at the top, bottom, sides, and front. Check cabinet access and reserved space at each location before releasing a volume PO.
Standalone switching without a base
IEM-3400-8S is an expansion module and cannot operate independently. A complete installation requires a compatible Catalyst IE3400 Rugged base switch, not the module alone.
10G fiber interface requirements
The SFP interfaces support 100Mbps or 1Gbps, not 10Gbps. A 10G transceiver cannot turn this expansion module into a 10G interface.

IEM-3400-8S identifies a Catalyst IE3400 expansion module with eight Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports. IEM denotes the expansion-module role, 3400 identifies the IE3400 family, and 8S denotes eight SFP interfaces. The orderable hardware form is IEM-3400-8S=; this is not a standalone switch or a base-switch license variant.
IEM-3400-8S fits Catalyst IE3400 Rugged base switches, including IE-3400-8T2S-E, IE-3400-8T2S-A, IE-3400-8P2S-E, and IE-3400-8P2S-A. The base switch is required for operation; an expansion module is not a complete switch. Confirm the installed host PID before ordering hardware for an existing cabinet, and include the base separately for a new assembly.
IEM-3400-8S is managed through its Catalyst IE3400 Rugged host rather than a separate module interface. Host access includes WebUI, console CLI, SSH, Telnet, SNMP, Cisco Catalyst Center, NETCONF, and RESTCONF. Industrial integrations include CIP-based tools and PROFINET through STEP 7 or TIA Portal. Cisco has not announced an end-of-sale date for Catalyst IE3400 Rugged. IEM-3400-8S is an expansion-module option within that series. No, IEM-3400-8S must not be attached while the host switch is energized. Disconnect power before the expansion hardware is joined to the base, then engage the side connector and secure the retaining screws. The expansion module also requires its own EMC ground connection, separate from the base chassis ground.
IEM-3400-8S consumes 27W, which must be included in the complete assembly's power sizing. That figure belongs to the expansion module, not to the host switch or attached equipment. The module provides no PoE output, so its consumption is not an endpoint power budget.
