Copper and Fiber Connectivity for Small Business Networks

SG250-50-K9 is a smart managed Layer 2+ switch with 48 dedicated 10/100/1000 copper access ports and two fixed Gigabit copper/SFP combo uplinks. Each combo position supports either its copper connection or its fiber connection, not both simultaneously. The access ports do not supply PoE, so connected phones, access points and other powered devices require separate power. A full-width 1U chassis places the Cisco SG250-50 in a rack rather than a compact desktop enclosure. Within the Cisco 250 Series Smart Switches family, this configuration serves small-business networks needing copper density and a choice of copper or fiber handoff. The discontinued SG250-50HP-K9-NA differs by adding PoE+ with a shared 192W power budget.

Technical Details

100 Gbps switching capacity supports nonblocking traffic across the available interfaces. 74.41 Mpps forwarding performance characterizes operation with 64-byte packets, providing a separate small-packet sizing reference. Static IPv4 routing supports 32 routes across 16 IP interfaces, setting the boundary for inter-VLAN routing configurations. SG250-50-K9 combines 512 MB of DRAM with 256 MB of flash for control-plane operation and image storage. A dynamically shared 24 Mb packet buffer accommodates traffic arriving across multiple ports, while the MAC table holds 8000 entries. STP/RSTP/MSTP provide spanning-tree controls, and LACP supports aggregated Ethernet connections. Eight hardware queues support traffic prioritization using strict-priority or Weighted Round-Robin scheduling. Browser configuration and the scriptable Textview CLI provide local administration without requiring a separate controller. 35.4W maximum system consumption informs electrical sizing; the single cooling fan means the chassis is not fanless.

Ordering

ORM Systems offers SG250-50-K9 new sealed or certified refurbished; specify condition, quantity and regional power cord on the PO. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, every port linking at rated speed, clean boot, optics bay recognition, PSU status and fan status; firmware is verified and configurations are wiped to factory default. ORM provides up to 3-year extended warranty for new units, up to 1 year for certified refurbished units, and 30-day returns on every condition, terms apply; Cisco's separate limited lifetime hardware warranty, with 1-year fan and power-supply coverage, ends October 31, 2026. Enterprise and volume orders support PO acceptance, Net-30 for government and RMA with advance replacement across UK, EU, US and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Migration beyond discontinued replacement

New deployments should specify C1200-48T-4G rather than discontinued CBS250-48T-4G-NA, whose end-of-sale date was October 29, 2024; the intermediate replacement is no longer a current purchase alternative.

Separate fiber optic selection

Fiber uplinks need separately ordered optics; specify MGBSX1 for multimode links to 500 m or MGBLX1 for single-mode links to 10 km, with matching fiber connections on the purchase order.

Best For

Branch Provisioning

When several branch switches need a repeatable starting configuration, Cisco Network Plug and Play with PnP Connect supports centralized provisioning. Configuration files can also move through the front-panel USB Type-A slot. Confirm the provisioning workflow and include any required local staging equipment before issuing the purchase order.

Lab Traffic Analysis

When a lab or staging bench needs packet visibility before equipment enters service, port mirroring can send traffic from four source ports to one destination port. The destination connection serves the analyzer rather than another endpoint. Reserve that connection and specify the capture equipment before placing the order.

Not Suitable If

10G uplinks to distribution

The fixed uplinks stop at 1G and cannot accept a 10G uplink card. C1200-48T-4X provides 48 Gigabit copper ports with four 10G SFP+ uplinks.

PoE for connected endpoints

The access ports carry data but do not deliver endpoint power. C1200-48P-4G provides powered Gigabit access with four 1G SFP uplinks.

More than 32 static routes

IPv4 routing supports 32 static routes and 16 IP interfaces. A requirement exceeding either limit cannot be met by expanding this model's routing configuration.

Questions & Answers

What does the SG250-50-K9 part number mean?

SG250-50-K9 identifies the Cisco SG250-50 Gigabit Smart Switch: SG250 names the family, and 50 covers 48 dedicated copper ports plus two combo ports. SG250-50-K9-NA is the regional ordering form for the United States. Retain K9 when specifying the complete part number and confirm the destination region.

How is SG250-50-K9 managed?

SG250-50-K9 supports an HTTP/HTTPS web interface, Textview CLI over SSH or Telnet, SNMP versions 1, 2c and 3, and Smart Network Application. Cisco FindIT Network Manager, the embedded FindIT Network Probe, FindIT Network Discovery Utility and Cisco Active Advisor are additional management or discovery integrations; the CLI supports full and menu-based operation.

What is the lifecycle status of SG250-50-K9?

SG250-50-K9 reached end of sale on October 30, 2021, and Cisco support ends October 31, 2026. Software maintenance ended October 30, 2022. Its direct replacement, CBS250-48T-4G-NA, is also discontinued; C1200-48T-4G is the current migration endpoint after that intermediate generation.

What conditions and warranties does ORM offer for SG250-50-K9?

ORM offers SG250-50-K9 new sealed with up to 3-year extended warranty, or certified refurbished with up to 1 year. Returns are 30 days for every condition; terms apply. Cisco's separate limited lifetime hardware warranty, with 1-year fan and power-supply coverage, is bounded by the last support date of October 31, 2026.

Which older switches did SG250-50-K9 replace?

SG250-50-K9 historically replaced discontinued SG200-50 switches ordered as SLM2048T-AU, SLM2048T-CN, SLM2048T-EU, SLM2048T-NA and SLM2048T-UK. Those regional predecessors belong to the same older generation. Both generations are discontinued; a current migration should follow the later replacement chain to C1200-48T-4G rather than stop at the legacy model.

Which fiber uplinks and optics can the Cisco SG250-50 use?

The Cisco SG250-50 provides two 1G SFP connections shared with its two copper combo uplink connections. MGBSX1 supports multimode fiber to 500 m, while MGBLX1 supports single-mode fiber to 10 km. Only one medium operates in each combo position, so copper and fiber cannot operate simultaneously in that position.

Can SG250-50-K9 route between VLANs?

Yes, SG250-50-K9 supports static IPv4 routing between configured interfaces, with a maximum of 32 static routes and 16 IP interfaces. Interfaces can be associated with a physical port, LAG, VLAN or loopback. The switch is Layer 2+ under this classification because its routing capability is static.

What rack space does the Cisco SG250-50 require?

The Cisco SG250-50 occupies 1U in a rack and measures 440 mm wide, 44 mm high and 257 mm deep. The chassis weighs 2.94 kg and uses an internal AC power supply. Allow space for the selected front-panel connections and the power connection when planning the cabinet.

How much power does SG250-50-K9 consume?

SG250-50-K9 consumes a maximum of 35.4W at 220V AC; its maximum at 110V AC is 35.2W. The internal supply accepts 100-240V AC, and one fan provides cooling. These figures cover system operation without endpoint power delivery because this model does not provide PoE.

What is the difference between SG250-50-K9 and SG250-50HP-K9-NA?

SG250-50HP-K9-NA supplies PoE+ from a shared 192W budget, whereas SG250-50-K9 provides no endpoint power. Both models are discontinued. The non-PoE configuration fits legacy installations with separately powered equipment; the PoE+ version serves legacy replacements where the endpoint load fits its allocated power budget.

What is the difference between SG250-50-K9 and SG250-26-K9-NA?

SG250-50-K9 provides 48 dedicated Gigabit copper ports, while SG250-26-K9-NA provides 24; both add two Gigabit combo ports and are discontinued. The higher-density model fits existing cabinets needing more copper connections, while the smaller configuration fits legacy replacements with fewer endpoint connections to accommodate.

What is the difference between SG250-50-K9 and C1200-48T-4G?

C1200-48T-4G has four 1G SFP uplinks, while SG250-50-K9 has two 1G copper/SFP combo uplinks. The discontinued CBS250-48T-4G-NA sits between them in the replacement chain. The older configuration serves matching legacy installations; the current Catalyst 1200 model suits purchases requiring four independent fiber uplinks.
