Enclosure-Integrated Networking for Data Center Servers

WS-CBS3020-HPQ is a managed Gigabit Ethernet blade switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem enclosures, with 16 internal server connections and eight external Gigabit interfaces. Four external interfaces offer shared RJ-45/SFP connectivity; the remaining four provide copper connections. The original LAN Base configuration supplies Layer 2 switching rather than an enterprise routing tier. This Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 for HP is an enclosure module, not a standalone desktop or rack-mounted switch. Its fixed uplink architecture allows copper and fiber media choices without a removable uplink card. The configuration serves blade-server network interfaces rather than PoE-powered endpoints, with the host enclosure providing the switch’s operating environment.

Technical Details

48 Gbps switching capacity provides the switching fabric, while 36 Mpps forwarding performance applies to 64-byte packets. WS-CBS3020-HPQ contains 128 MB of DRAM and 32 MB of flash memory for switch operation and software storage. An 8192-entry MAC table bounds address learning. LACP supports aggregated connections, while RSTP and MSTP provide spanning-tree controls. Four output queues per port support traffic prioritization through Shaped Round Robin scheduling and priority queuing. Management includes a browser-based Device Manager, the console, Telnet, SNMP and SSH with a cryptographic image. The original software configuration supports 1005 VLANs and 128 spanning-tree instances; these limits should govern configuration sizing rather than the larger VLAN identifier range. Jumbo-frame support reaches a 9018-byte MTU, subject to matching settings across the connected network.

Ordering

ORM Systems offers WS-CBS3020-HPQ new sealed and certified refurbished, with up to 3-year extended warranty on new units, up to 1 year on certified refurbished units, and 30-day returns on every condition; terms apply. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, rated-speed port links, optics bay recognition and clean boot, with firmware verified and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify condition, quantity, installed software and required media configuration on the purchase order. Enterprise and volume orders can use PO acceptance, Net-30 for government and RMA with advance replacement, with regional stock/RMA across the UK, EU, US and MEA.

Best For

Installed-Base Module Replacement

An existing blade enclosure needing a replacement network module requires the original connection map to be preserved. Two copper uplinks can instead provide internal cross-connections to another switch module, changing the available external connections. Specify the required connection arrangement and preserve the existing configuration before issuing the PO.

Legacy Software Staging

A staging project moving older software to an IP Base release needs the upgrade sequence agreed before shipment. Device Manager upgrades from releases 12.2(35)SE through 12.2(40)SE1 to 12.2(50)SE or later must first pass through 12.2(40)SE2. Specify the installed image and required destination release on the order.

Not Suitable If

10G uplinks to aggregation

WS-CBS3020-HPQ provides Gigabit external interfaces, including its shared fiber connections. A requirement for native 10G uplinks exceeds the switch’s fixed interface capabilities.

Standalone rack or desktop installation

WS-CBS3020-HPQ is an integrated module for HP c-Class BladeSystem enclosures. The hardware is not a standalone switch for direct rack or desktop installation.

Active Cisco hardware support

Cisco support for WS-CBS3020-HPQ ended November 30, 2018. An installation requiring an active Cisco hardware support entitlement cannot satisfy that requirement with this model.

Questions & Answers

What does the WS-CBS3020-HPQ part number identify?

WS-CBS3020-HPQ identifies the Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 for HP. The model designation is 3020, and the complete ordering identifier selects the HP enclosure version. The product is an integrated blade-server switch, not a standalone access switch with front-panel server access ports.

How is WS-CBS3020-HPQ managed?

WS-CBS3020-HPQ supports browser-based Device Manager, CLI access through the console or Telnet, SSH with a cryptographic image, and SNMP management including CiscoWorks. HP Onboard Administrator and Express Setup also provide initial IP setup paths. The installed software image determines whether encrypted management features are available.

Is WS-CBS3020-HPQ end of life?

WS-CBS3020-HPQ is retired, and Cisco support ended November 30, 2018. End of sale was November 15, 2013. Purchasing remaining hardware does not restart those milestones or restore Cisco service eligibility, so the purchase must be assessed as continued operation of an unsupported installed base.

What condition and warranty options does ORM Systems offer for WS-CBS3020-HPQ?

ORM Systems offers WS-CBS3020-HPQ new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for certified refurbished units. Both conditions have 30-day returns; terms apply. Cisco’s original 90-day hardware warranty no longer provides coverage; Cisco support ended November 30, 2018.

How many independent network connections does WS-CBS3020-HPQ provide?

WS-CBS3020-HPQ provides 16 internal Gigabit server connections and eight external Gigabit interfaces. Four external interfaces share copper and SFP media positions, so their copper and fiber connectors are not independent ports. Two additional copper interfaces can be configured for internal cross-connections instead of external uplinks.

Which fiber uplink option does the Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 for HP support?

The Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 for HP supports Gigabit fiber connectivity through four shared SFP interfaces, including GLC-SX-MM= for short-reach multimode connections with an LC connector. Selecting fiber uses the corresponding shared interface rather than adding another uplink. Specify the required media arrangement with the switch order.

How is WS-CBS3020-HPQ powered?

WS-CBS3020-HPQ receives power through its HP c-Class BladeSystem enclosure connection, with a 12V DC, 5A requirement and 60W power figure. The purchase is an enclosure-dependent switch module rather than a standalone AC-powered switch. Confirm the intended enclosure installation and available power allocation before ordering.

Which software image does WS-CBS3020-HPQ use?

WS-CBS3020-HPQ originally uses LAN Base, while Cisco IOS release 12.2(50)SE and later uses an IP Base image. Device Manager upgrades from certain earlier LAN Base releases require an intermediate 12.2(40)SE2 upgrade. Specify the actual installed image and release rather than assuming software from the hardware identifier alone.

Can the Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 for HP be installed as a standalone switch?

The Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 for HP cannot serve as a standalone rack or desktop switch; the module integrates into an HP c-Class BladeSystem enclosure. Its internal server connections depend on the enclosure backplane. Confirm the intended enclosure and connection arrangement before purchasing hardware for a replacement installation.

What switching performance does WS-CBS3020-HPQ provide?

WS-CBS3020-HPQ provides 48 Gbps switching capacity and a maximum forwarding rate of 36 Mpps for 64-byte packets. These figures describe different performance measures rather than interchangeable ratings. Individual server and external network connections remain Gigabit interfaces, so an aggregate capacity figure does not increase any single link’s speed.
