WS-X3500-XL is the Cisco GigaStack Stacking GBIC and 50 cm cable, a 1 Gbps GigaStack GBIC for Catalyst 3550, 2950G, 3500 XL and modular Catalyst 2900 XL switches. Cascaded stack or point-to-point operation is its edge over a standard 1000BASE-X GBIC. A switch without a GBIC slot does not take this part. The Catalyst 3550 GigaStack GBIC uses the front GBIC slot and the Cisco proprietary GigaStack cable. A Cisco Catalyst 3550 stack cable build needs one GigaStack GBIC in each switch. The stack gives network management through one IP address and presents the group as one large switch for management.

1 Gbps of stack bandwidth serves a cascaded GigaStack or a two-switch point-to-point link. Nine switches is the maximum daisy-chain size, so a stack of n switches needs n GBICs and n-1 GigaStack cables. The two GigaStack ports on the module take Cisco proprietary CAB-GS-50CM or CAB-GS-1M cables, and the GBIC-to-GBIC distance limit is 1 m. WS-X3500-XL autonegotiates duplex on each port. Loops inside one GBIC are not permitted because one cable in port 1 and port 2 of the same GBIC creates an unstable link. Catalyst 3500 XL and modular Catalyst 2900 XL switches need IOS 12.0(5.1)XP or later.
WS-X3500-XL is offered new sealed and certified refurbished. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested between two compatible switches, with link up in a compatible GBIC slot. Cisco no longer supports the Catalyst 3550, Catalyst 2950, Catalyst 3500 XL and Catalyst 2900-XL, so ORM's warranty is the cover that applies. Count one GBIC per switch and confirm 50 cm or 1 m cable reach before the PO. Warranty is new — up to 3-year extended and certified refurbished — up to 1 year, with 30 days on every condition; terms apply. Regional stock/RMA covers UK, EU, US and MEA, RMA with advance replacement, PO accepted and Net-30 for government.

A buyer maintaining retired Catalyst 3550, Catalyst 2950G, Catalyst 3500 XL or modular Catalyst 2900 XL stacks needs like-for-like GBIC spares because Cisco no longer supports these families. Count one GigaStack GBIC per switch, then count the GigaStack cables between each adjacent member before the PO.
A buyer adding another switch to a cascaded GigaStack needs another front-slot GBIC and another Cisco proprietary GigaStack cable. The stack ceiling is nine switches, and the GBIC-to-GBIC distance limit is 1 m, so count the new member and measure the cable path before the PO.
A buyer staging two retired Catalyst switches for a lab can use the GigaStack GBIC for a point-to-point Gigabit connection. Each switch needs a GBIC slot and one module, and the two modules need a GigaStack cable within 1 m before the PO.
Switches without GBIC slots
WS-X3500-XL fits front GBIC slots on named Catalyst families. Catalyst 2950 models without GBIC slots do not take this GBIC.
More than 1 m reach
GigaStack GBIC-to-GBIC distance is 1 m. Use WS-G5484 for a standard 1000BASE-SX uplink when the link must run beyond GigaStack cable reach.
StackWise or FlexStack migration
WS-X3500-XL is a GigaStack GBIC, not a StackWise or FlexStack part. Do not order it for StackWise or FlexStack switches.

WS-X3500-XL is the Cisco GigaStack Stacking GBIC and 50 cm cable for 1 Gbps GigaStack links. It fits the front GBIC slot on Catalyst 3550, Catalyst 2950G, Catalyst 3500 XL and modular Catalyst 2900 XL switches. The part is a GBIC, not a switch.
WS-X3500-XL fits Catalyst 3550, Catalyst 2950G, Catalyst 3500 XL and modular Catalyst 2900 XL switches with GBIC slots. Catalyst 2950 models without GBIC slots do not take this GBIC. StackWise, FlexStack and SFP-only Catalyst switches need their own stack hardware, not this GigaStack GBIC.
A Catalyst 3550 with GBIC slots uses WS-X3500-XL for GigaStack links. The same GigaStack cable choices are CAB-GS-50CM and CAB-GS-1M, and the GBIC-to-GBIC distance limit is 1 m. Standard 1000BASE-X GBICs serve uplinks instead of GigaStack stacking.
WS-X3500-XL is described as a GigaStack Stacking GBIC and 50 cm cable. The GBIC provides the front-slot interface, and the cable provides the short GigaStack link. A stack still needs one GigaStack GBIC per switch, so one package does not populate a multi-switch stack.
WS-X3500-XL GigaStack carries 1 Gbps. The technology forms a cascaded stack or a point-to-point link, gives one IP address for stack management, and autonegotiates duplex on each GigaStack port. A point-to-point link runs full duplex; a stack link uses half-duplex links.
A GigaStack needs one WS-X3500-XL per switch and one fewer GigaStack cable than the member count in a daisy chain. Four switches need 4 GBICs and 3 cables. Use CAB-GS-50CM for adjacent switches and CAB-GS-1M when the measured path needs 1 m.
WS-X3500-XL can stack up to 9 switches in a GigaStack daisy chain. The same GBIC also forms a point-to-point Gigabit link between two switches. Do not cable port 1 and port 2 of the same GBIC together, because that loop makes the link unstable.
WS-X3500-XL needs IOS 12.0(5.1)XP or later on Catalyst 3500 XL and modular Catalyst 2900 XL switches. IOS 12.0(5)XU is the release for redundant loop configurations. Every switch in the GigaStack must meet the software rule before the GBICs and cables are installed.
WS-X3500-XL is the GigaStack GBIC that sits in the switch GBIC slot. CAB-GS-1M is only the 1 m proprietary GigaStack cable between two GigaStack GBICs. Order the GBIC when a switch lacks the module, and order the cable when the 50 cm lead cannot reach.
Cisco has retired the Catalyst 3550, Catalyst 2950, Catalyst 3500 XL and Catalyst 2900-XL and no longer supports them. WS-X3500-XL serves those retired families, so the part is for maintenance, sparing and lab use on installed GigaStack networks rather than new Catalyst stack builds.
ORM offers WS-X3500-XL new sealed with up to 3-year extended warranty and certified refurbished with up to 1 year. Returns are 30 days on every condition; terms apply. Cisco no longer supports the Catalyst families this GBIC serves, so ORM's warranty is the cover that applies. Commercial terms are PO accepted, Net-30 for government and RMA with advance replacement.
