Centralized Fabric Extension for Data Center Server Racks

N6001P-6FEX-10G combines a Nexus 6001P parent with six 10G fabric extenders and FET-10G transceivers for centrally managed data center server connections. The parent carries 48 fixed 1/10G SFP+ ports and four fixed 40G QSFP+ ports in 1U, without PoE output. Base NX-OS provides Layer 2 switching, while the fabric extenders operate as extensions of the parent rather than independently managed switches. The fixed uplink architecture does not require a separate uplink card. The discontinued N6001P-6FEX-1G bundle instead includes six 1G fabric extenders, changing the extender speed class rather than the parent family. A configuration combining direct server connections and remote extender connections needs each link assigned to the appropriate parent interface and connection medium.

Technical Details

1280 Gbps switching capacity provides the parent switch's aggregate fabric bandwidth for server-facing and upstream traffic. Approximately 1 microsecond of port-to-port latency comes from cut-through forwarding on the SFP+ model. A shared 25 MB packet buffer serves each group of twelve 10G ports or three 40G ports, so buffering is shared rather than independently dedicated to every interface. N6001P-6FEX-10G supports PVRST+, MSTP and LACP for Layer 2 topology and link aggregation control. Jumbo frames reach 9216 bytes for networks using larger Ethernet frames. Management includes console CLI access, SSHv2 and Telnet, with SNMP and XML NETCONF for integration and Cisco DCNM for graphical operations. The Nexus 6000 architecture supports virtual port channels rather than conventional hardware stacking. Storage convergence requires a separate entitlement: N6001-16P-SSK9 enables storage protocols on sixteen ports, while N6001-64P-SSK9 covers sixty-four. Those licenses enable storage functions without adding physical interfaces to the parent chassis.

Ordering

ORM Systems offers N6001P-6FEX-10G new sealed or certified refurbished; new units carry up to a 3-year extended ORM warranty, certified refurbished units up to 1 year, and every condition has 30-day returns, terms apply. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, rated-speed links on every port, clean boot, optics bay recognition, PSU status and fan status, with firmware verified and configurations wiped to factory default. Specify condition, complete bundle contents and required entitlements on the purchase order. POs are accepted, government buyers receive Net-30, and enterprise or volume orders have RMA with advance replacement, with regional stock and RMA across the UK, EU, US and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Verify installed software entitlements

N6001P-6FEX-10G needs entitlement verification before routed use: N6K-BAS1K9 and N6001-LAN1K9 are separate feature licenses; Cisco ONE Foundation and Advanced perpetual suites were alternative purchasing paths.

Replacement bundle also discontinued

N6001P-6FEX-10G reached end of sale on April 30, 2017. Its named replacement, N5672UP-6FEX-10G, also reached end of sale, on April 30, 2018, and is not a current-order migration target.

Specify upstream link optics

N6001P-6FEX-10G requires link-specific media beyond FET-10G extender connections: specify QSFP-40G-SR4 for compatible 40G multimode fiber links or SFP-10G-SR for compatible 10G multimode fiber links.

Best For

Fabric Extender Consolidation

An existing fabric extender estate approaching a parent's attachment limit needs a topology review before another bundle is added. Nexus 6001 supports 24 fabric extenders in Layer 2 operation, including single-connected and dual-connected arrangements. Map existing associations, planned parent connections and interface allocations before defining the purchase order.

Traffic Capture Staging

A validation lab needing mirrored traffic for troubleshooting must allocate monitoring destinations alongside its server connections. Nexus 6001 supports 31 line-rate SPAN and ERSPAN sessions. Identify source interfaces, destination links and capture appliances, then specify the monitoring connection media and required capture-side connections before the purchase order.

Airflow Matched Sparing

A spare matched to an installed rack must preserve its airflow direction as well as its chassis family. Port-side exhaust uses N6K-C6001-FAN-F= and N55-PAC-1100W=; port-side intake uses N6K-C6001-FAN-B= and N55-PAC-1100W-B=. Confirm the required assembly direction and specify matching spare components before the purchase order.

Not Suitable If

Active Cisco hardware support

Cisco service for N6001P-6FEX-10G ended on April 30, 2022. A deployment requiring active manufacturer hardware support cannot satisfy that requirement with this discontinued bundle.

Native 25G server connections

N6001P-6FEX-10G uses 1/10G SFP+ parent interfaces and 10G fabric extenders; native 25G server attachment is outside this bundle's port capabilities, regardless of software entitlement.

Questions & Answers

What does each part of N6001P-6FEX-10G mean?

N6001P-6FEX-10G identifies a Nexus 6001P chassis bundled with six 10G fabric extenders and FET-10G transceivers. N6001P names the parent switch configuration, 6FEX gives the extender quantity, and 10G gives the extender speed class. The final segment is not a software-license tier or a regional ordering suffix.

How is N6001P-6FEX-10G managed?

N6001P-6FEX-10G is managed through NX-OS CLI over console, SSHv2 or Telnet, using in-band or dedicated Ethernet management access. SNMP and XML NETCONF support automation and monitoring. Graphical and centralized tools include Cisco DCNM, Cisco Fabric Manager and CiscoWorks LMS; the fabric extenders remain managed through the parent switch.

Which licensing paths apply to N6001P-6FEX-10G?

N6001P-6FEX-10G uses base Layer 2 software, with individual feature licenses or Cisco ONE Foundation and Advanced perpetual suites as historical purchasing paths. N6K-BAS1K9 enables Layer 3 Base, while N6001-LAN1K9 adds Enterprise functions. Those discontinued ordering options require entitlement and usage-right verification rather than an assumption that additional software is included.

What is the lifecycle status of N6001P-6FEX-10G?

N6001P-6FEX-10G reached end of sale on April 30, 2017, and Cisco support ended on April 30, 2022. Software maintenance ended April 30, 2018, followed by security support on April 29, 2020. Purchasing remaining inventory does not restart manufacturer engineering, security maintenance or hardware support for this discontinued bundle.

Which uplinks and optics can N6001P-6FEX-10G use?

N6001P-6FEX-10G has 48 fixed 1/10G SFP+ ports and four 40G QSFP+ ports on its parent chassis. QSFP-40G-SR4 supports 40G multimode fiber connections, while QSFP-4SFP10G-CU1M breaks one 40G port into four 10G connections. Specify breakout versus native 40G operation and the matching link media before ordering the connection components.

Can N6001P-6FEX-10G perform OSPF or BGP routing?

N6001P-6FEX-10G requires an additional license for OSPF or BGP routing; default software provides Layer 2 switching. N6K-BAS1K9 enables OSPFv2, OSPFv3, RIPv2 and EIGRP Stub, with a maximum of 256 dynamic routes. N6001-LAN1K9 adds BGP, full EIGRP and IS-IS. Hardware scale and the Base license's dynamic-route limit are separate constraints.

Does the Nexus 6001 parent switch have redundant power supplies?

The Nexus 6001 parent switch ships with two power supplies for redundancy and three fan modules. Compatible AC spares include N55-PAC-1100W= for port-side exhaust and N55-PAC-1100W-B= for port-side intake. Each supply is rated 1100W; that rating does not describe total consumption of the six-extender bundle. Match airflow before specifying spares.

How much rack space does the Nexus 6001P parent require?

The Nexus 6001P parent switch occupies 1U and measures 44 mm high, 439 mm wide and 762 mm deep. Its operating range is 0°C to 40°C. The extenders are separate units, so allow additional rack positions and verify clearance, airflow and power connections for each component before finalizing the cabinet plan.

What is the difference between N6001P-6FEX-10G and N6001P-6FEX-1G?

N6001P-6FEX-10G includes six 10G fabric extenders, whereas N6001P-6FEX-1G includes six 1G fabric extenders. Both use a Nexus 6001P parent and both bundles are discontinued. The 10G configuration corresponds to higher-speed server attachment; the 1G configuration corresponds to legacy Gigabit endpoints, not a different parent uplink class.

What is the difference between N6001P-6FEX-10G and N6001P-4FEX-10G?

N6001P-6FEX-10G includes six 10G fabric extenders, while N6001P-4FEX-10G includes four. Both discontinued bundles pair that extender speed class with a Nexus 6001P parent. Six extenders match a larger existing attachment plan; four match a smaller one. Compare complete bundle inventories rather than the parent chassis alone when identifying replacement stock.

What is the difference between N6001P-6FEX-10G and N6K-C6001-64T?

N6001P-6FEX-10G uses a parent with 48 fixed SFP+ ports, while N6K-C6001-64T provides 48 fixed 1/10GBASE-T ports. Both are discontinued. The SFP+ parent fits compatible fiber or SFP-H10GB-CU1M connections; the copper chassis fits RJ-45 server cabling. The six-extender bundle and bare chassis are not interchangeable order quantities.

What condition and warranty options does ORM Systems offer for N6001P-6FEX-10G?

ORM Systems offers N6001P-6FEX-10G new sealed with up to a 3-year extended ORM warranty or certified refurbished with up to 1 year. Both conditions include 30-day returns, terms apply. Cisco's original 1-year limited hardware warranty and service ended April 30, 2022. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested, with firmware verified and configurations wiped to factory default.

Does the Nexus 6001 support FCoE without a storage license?

The Nexus 6001 requires the applicable storage services entitlement for FCoE. N6001-16P-SSK9 enables storage protocols on 16 ports, and N6001-64P-SSK9 covers 64 ports. Ethernet switching alone does not establish storage rights. Check the installed license inventory and planned storage-facing interfaces; the six-extender bundle name does not establish those entitlements.

Which replacement was named for N6001P-6FEX-10G?

N5672UP-6FEX-10G was the named replacement for N6001P-6FEX-10G, retaining six 10G fabric extenders in a Nexus 5672UP bundle. That replacement bundle also reached end of sale on April 30, 2018. Treat the PID as a historical migration reference, not as a current supported replacement order for a new deployment.
