800 Gbps switching capacity and 250 Mpps forwarding support dense 10G aggregation without changing the one-rack-unit chassis. 64000 IPv4 forwarding entries, 55000 MAC entries, 4094 VLANs, 4094 SVIs, 32 MB of shared buffers, 4 GB of DRAM and 2 GB of NVRAM set the scale for the 16-port base system. WS-C4500X-16SFP+ supports Static, RIPv1/v2, OSPF for Routed Access up to 1000 routes, EIGRP limited Stub Routing, PIM SM, SSM and Bidir under IP Base; BGP, IS-IS, Full OSPF, Full EIGRP and VRF-lite require Enterprise Services. VSS combines two same-model switches over 1G or 10G Virtual Switch Links with up to eight VSL links, and Cisco IOS XE 3.4.0SG is the minimum release for VSS capability. WS-C4500X-16SFP+ is the front-to-back Catalyst 4500-X 16-port 10GE IP Base chassis with no power supply. WS-C4500X identifies the Catalyst 4500-X switch family, 16SFP+ identifies the 16 SFP+ 10GE port hardware, and the absence of the F airflow marker separates it from the back-to-front variant.
WS-C4500X-16SFP+ is managed through Cisco IOS XE CLI and setup tools, not as an unmanaged switch. Management paths include the RJ-45 console, the 10/100/1000 Ethernet management port, Telnet virtual terminal access, SNMP, device manager and Cisco Network Assistant after initial IP addressing is configured.
Cisco support for WS-C4500X-16SFP+ ended on 31 October 2025. Hardware end of sale was 30 October 2020, last ship was 29 January 2021, software maintenance ended 30 October 2021, and active service or warranty support became unavailable after the last support date.

WS-C4500X-16SFP+ ships without a power supply. Front-to-back AC deployments use C4KX-PWR-750AC-R, front-to-back DC deployments use C4KX-PWR-750DC-R, and the chassis supports one or two supplies, including mixed AC and DC combinations. Order power cords accordingly.

WS-C4500X-16SFP+ is a 1U rack-mount chassis. The standard C4948E-ACC-KIT mounts it in a 19-inch two-post rack, while WS-X4948E-19CNTR=, WS-X4948E-23CNTR= and C4948E-BKT-KIT= are optional rack-mount kits for other mounting positions. The chassis is 44 mm high.
C9500-16X was the replacement named for WS-C4500X-16SFP+, and C9500-16X is now discontinued with C9500-24Y4C as its migration target. Buyers maintaining Catalyst 4500-X spares should separate like-for-like service stock from new designs that need current 9500-series ordering.
WS-C4500X-16SFP+ uses front-to-back airflow, while WS-C4500X-F-16SFP+ uses back-to-front airflow. Both are 16-port 10GE IP Base Catalyst 4500-X chassis without power supplies, so buyers choose by rack airflow direction and matching power-supply airflow before stocking spares.
