Fanless Access Connectivity for Small Business Networks

SF250-24-K9 is a fanless, Layer 2+ smart-managed switch with 24 Fast Ethernet access ports and four fixed Gigabit uplinks for small-business networks. Two uplinks are dedicated SFP connections; two are copper/SFP combo connections, with one medium active per combo port. Access ports carry data without supplying PoE, so connected phones, cameras, and wireless access points need separate power. The full-width 1U chassis belongs to the Cisco 250 Series Smart Switches family and provides configurable access switching rather than unmanaged connectivity. The discontinued SF250-24P-K9-NA adds PoE+ for powered endpoints, distinguishing the nearest sibling from this data-only model. This configuration addresses offices retaining 10/100 endpoint connections while using Gigabit links toward shared network resources.

Technical Details

12.8 Gbps switching capacity accommodates the access and uplink interfaces through a nonblocking switching fabric. 9.52 Mpps forwarding handles 64-byte packets at wire speed. Static IPv4 routing supports inter-VLAN communication with a maximum of 32 routes; dynamic routing is not part of the feature set. An 8000-entry MAC address table supports learned endpoint addresses. SF250-24-K9 combines 512 MB of DRAM with 256 MB of flash for operating software and configuration storage. The SF250-24 shares a 12 Mb packet buffer across its ports to absorb traffic bursts. STP/RSTP/MSTP address switching loops, while LACP groups physical connections into logical links. Eight hardware queues provide traffic prioritization, with strict-priority and weighted scheduling available for differentiated treatment. Local administration uses a browser-based HTTP/HTTPS interface or CLI access over SSH/Telnet. Dual software images support firmware upgrade handling without requiring an additional hardware module.

Ordering

ORM Systems supplies SF250-24-K9 in new sealed and certified refurbished condition; specify the condition, regional version, and required MGBSX1 or MGBLX1 optics on the purchase order. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested, with optics bay recognition checked, firmware verified, and configuration wiped to factory default. New units carry up to a 3-year extended ORM warranty, certified refurbished units carry up to 1 year, and every condition includes 30-day returns; terms apply. For enterprise and volume POs, ORM accepts purchase orders, offers Net-30 for government, and provides RMA with advance replacement through regional stock and RMA coverage in the UK, EU, US, and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Software maintenance has ended

SF250-24-K9 deployments need a fixed-firmware maintenance plan because software maintenance releases ended July 30, 2023. Hardware reached end of sale July 30, 2022; plan procurement around remaining inventory.

Specify fiber optics separately

Fiber connections require separately specified optics: MGBSX1 supports multimode links to 500 m, while MGBLX1 supports single-mode links to 10 km. Match MGBSX1 or MGBLX1 to the fiber plant and include quantities on the purchase order.

Best For

Multi-Site Configuration Standardization

When several offices need consistent configurations, the embedded FindIT Network Probe removes the need for a separate probe appliance or virtual machine. Text-editable configuration files support repeatable preparation across sites, while Cisco Network Plug and Play supports provisioning. Before the PO, specify the provisioning workflow and site configuration template.

Traffic Analysis Staging

When a troubleshooting bench needs visibility into several endpoint connections, port mirroring can copy traffic from up to four source ports to one destination port. VLAN mirroring provides another capture option. Before ordering the staging equipment, reserve the analyzer connection and identify which traffic sources need simultaneous observation.

Segmented Office Expansion

When an office adds separate departmental or guest networks, the switch supports 255 active VLANs and 16 IP interfaces. Those limits distinguish VLAN segmentation from the number of networks that can receive routing interfaces. Before the PO, check the proposed interface count and allocate the required VLAN assignments.

Not Suitable If

Gigabit speeds at every access port

SF250-24-K9 access ports stop at 100 Mbps. C1200-24T-4G provides 24 Gigabit access ports and four Gigabit SFP uplinks for an access-speed upgrade.

PoE-powered phones and access points

SF250-24-K9 supplies no endpoint power. C1200-24P-4G provides powered access ports and also changes the access connections from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet.

Questions & Answers

What does the SF250-24-K9 part number mean?

SF250-24-K9 identifies the SF250-24 Fast Ethernet smart switch: SF250 is the family designation, and 24 is the access-port count. K9 remains part of the base identifier. Regional forms include SF250-24-K9-NA, SF250-24-K9-EU, and SF250-24-K9-UK; the final suffix selects the regional ordering version, not a different port configuration.

How is SF250-24-K9 managed?

SF250-24-K9 supports a web UI over HTTP/HTTPS, CLI over SSH/Telnet, SNMP, Smart Network Application, FindIT Network Manager with an embedded FindIT Network Probe, FindIT Network Discovery Utility, and Cisco Active Advisor. Cisco Network Plug and Play also supports provisioning; select the required administration and monitoring methods before staging.

Is SF250-24-K9 discontinued?

SF250-24-K9 is discontinued, with end of sale on July 30, 2022, and last support on July 31, 2027. Software maintenance releases ended July 30, 2023. The current migration chain through the discontinued CBS250-24T-4G-NA leads to C1200-24T-4G, rather than stopping at the older Business replacement.

What conditions and warranties does ORM offer for SF250-24-K9?

SF250-24-K9 is offered new sealed or certified refurbished, with ORM warranties of up to 3 years extended for new units and up to 1 year for refurbished units. Both conditions include 30-day returns; terms apply. Cisco's limited lifetime hardware warranty is separate, subject to eligibility, and ends no later than July 31, 2027.

Which older switch does SF250-24-K9 replace?

SF250-24-K9 replaced the discontinued SF200-24 regional models SLM224GT-AR, SLM224GT-EU, SLM224GT-NA, and SLM224GT-UK. Match the old unit's regional form when identifying a like-for-like spare. The SF250 replacement is itself discontinued, so retaining this hardware is a different decision from specifying a current-generation switch.

How many uplinks does SF250-24-K9 have?

SF250-24-K9 has four Gigabit uplink connections: two dedicated SFP ports and two copper/SFP combo ports. Each combo connection uses either its copper interface or its SFP interface, not both simultaneously. These uplinks are built in; no removable uplink card is required to provide them.

Can SF250-24-K9 route between VLANs?

Yes, SF250-24-K9 supports static IPv4 routing between VLANs, with 32 static routes and 16 IP interfaces. The routing interfaces can be assigned to supported physical, aggregated, VLAN, or loopback interfaces. This is a static-routing configuration rather than a switch that exchanges dynamic routing updates with neighboring routers.

What power supply and maximum draw does SF250-24-K9 use?

SF250-24-K9 uses an internal universal AC power supply accepting 100-240V AC, with worst-case consumption of 10.9W at 220V and 10.6W at 110V. The power connection is for operating the switch itself, not powering attached endpoints. Specify the regional ordering version and matching power cord before dispatch.

Is SF250-24-K9 a rack-mount switch?

Yes, SF250-24-K9 is a full-width 1U rack-mount switch measuring 440 mm wide, 44 mm high, and 202 mm deep, with a weight of 2.72 kg. A mounting kit is included in the original package. Check the mounting hardware and installation clearance when preparing the order.

What is the difference between SF250-24-K9 and SF250-24P-K9-NA?

SF250-24-K9 provides data-only access ports, while SF250-24P-K9-NA adds PoE+ across 24 access ports with a shared 185W budget. Both models are discontinued. The non-PoE model suits retention of separately powered endpoints; the PoE version suits existing installations whose endpoint-power requirements fit that shared budget.

What is the difference between SF250-24-K9 and SF250-48-K9-NA?

SF250-24-K9 has 24 Fast Ethernet access ports, while SF250-48-K9-NA has 48 Fast Ethernet access ports. Both models are discontinued. The smaller model suits an existing connection plan within its port count; the larger model addresses legacy installations needing more access connections on a single switch.

What is the difference between SF250-24-K9 and C1200-24T-4G?

SF250-24-K9 has 100 Mbps access ports, whereas C1200-24T-4G has Gigabit access ports. The migration chain reaches C1200-24T-4G through the discontinued CBS250-24T-4G-NA. Retaining the SF250 model suits matching an existing Fast Ethernet installation; C1200-24T-4G suits buyers specifying Gigabit connections for a current access-switch purchase.

What traffic-prioritization features do Cisco 250 Series Smart Switches provide?

Cisco 250 Series Smart Switches provide eight hardware queues with strict-priority and Weighted Round-Robin scheduling. Traffic treatment can use port settings, VLAN priority, or IP-based classification. Voice VLAN support separates voice traffic for appropriate QoS handling; configure the classification and scheduling policy before introducing production traffic.
