Smart-Managed Access for Small Business Networks

SG220-50P-K9 is a Layer 2 smart-managed switch with 48 Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ access ports and two fixed Gigabit RJ-45/SFP combo uplinks in a 1U rack-mount chassis. The Cisco 220 Series serves small and midsize business networks connecting IP phones, wireless access points, cameras and ordinary Ethernet endpoints. The discontinued SG220-50-K9-NA is the corresponding non-PoE sibling. Automatic voice VLAN assignment separates phone traffic, while QoS controls prioritize different traffic classes across shared connections. SG220-50P also supports port authentication, access control lists and storm control for managing endpoint access and unwanted traffic. This is a switching-only design: traffic moving between VLANs requires a separate routing device. The fixed uplink arrangement does not provide an expansion bay for higher-speed network modules.

Technical Details

100 Gbps switching capacity accommodates the fixed port arrangement, while 74.4 Mpps forwarding at 64-byte packet size defines the small-packet processing ceiling. 375W of shared PoE power is allocated among attached devices rather than reserved at every port's maximum. SG220-50P-K9 combines 128 MB of DRAM and 32 MB of flash for its management functions, with a 12 Mb dynamically shared packet buffer handling transient queues. The 8192-entry MAC table and support for 256 simultaneous VLANs bound the Layer 2 configuration. STP/RSTP/MSTP handle loop prevention, and LACP groups links for aggregation. Eight hardware queues per port support traffic prioritization through strict-priority or weighted round-robin scheduling. Browser management, SSH CLI access and SNMPv3 provide separate administrative paths. Four speed-controlled fans cool the chassis, which operates from 0°C to 50°C. A 427W maximum draw supplies the electrical sizing figure for circuit and UPS planning.

Ordering

SG220-50P-K9 is offered new sealed or certified refurbished; ORM warranties are up to 3-year extended for new units and up to 1 year refurbished, with 30-day returns on every condition, terms apply. Cisco's limited lifetime hardware warranty includes 1-year fan/PSU coverage and ends by July 31, 2027; refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested, with PoE output verified under load on every powered port, firmware verified and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify quantity, condition, regional ordering form and required MGBSX1 or MGBLX1 transceivers on the PO. POs are accepted, with Net-30 for government and RMA with advance replacement; enterprise and volume requirements have regional stock/RMA across the UK, EU, US and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Allocate endpoint power before ordering

SG220-50P-K9 needs an endpoint power schedule because 48 × 30W = 1440W exceeds its shared 375W budget; specify each powered device's maximum demand before approving the endpoint list.

Specify fiber uplink components

Fiber connections on SG220-50P-K9 require compatible transceivers such as MGBSX1 or MGBLX1; specify fiber type and distance, and reserve the corresponding copper connector because each combo pair permits one active connection.

Software maintenance has ended

SG220-50P-K9 cannot be planned around future software fixes: software maintenance ended July 30, 2023. Confirm that the intended firmware and required functions satisfy the deployment before ordering additional units.

Best For

Scheduled Endpoint Power

When phones or wireless access points need power only during defined operating periods, time-based PoE lets administrators set an on/off schedule. Treat the endpoint operating calendar as part of the configuration plan, and specify which powered connections must remain active before the PO.

Multi-Site Configuration Rollout

When several small offices need the same approved configuration, text-editable configuration files can be prepared and downloaded to additional switches. Separate site-specific addressing from shared settings in the deployment plan, and specify the regional ordering form and configuration requirements before releasing a volume PO.

Traffic Analysis Staging

When a lab or staging network must reproduce a monitoring setup, port mirroring supports four sessions and can mirror eight source ports to one destination. Keep the analysis connection separate from endpoint planning, and specify the required source ports and analyzer attachment before ordering.

Not Suitable If

10G connections to upstream switches

SG220-50P-K9 has Gigabit combo uplinks only. The fixed connectors cannot provide 10G connectivity, and the chassis has no network-module expansion path for faster uplinks.

Inter-VLAN routing within the access switch

SG220-50P-K9 operates at Layer 2 and does not route between VLANs. Routed gateways must be provided elsewhere in the network rather than on this switch.

Cisco support after July 2027

Cisco support ends July 31, 2027. CBS220-48P-4G-NA is the current replacement and changes the uplinks from two combo pairs to four dedicated Gigabit SFP ports.

Questions & Answers

What does the SG220-50P-K9 part number mean?

SG220-50P-K9 identifies a Gigabit 220 Series PoE+ smart switch with 50 logical ports: 48 access ports and two combo uplinks. SG220 identifies the Gigabit family, 50 includes the uplinks, and P identifies powered access ports. SG220-50P-K9-NA is the regional ordering form used in the United States.

How is the Cisco 220 Series managed?

The Cisco 220 Series supports a web interface over HTTP/HTTPS, a full CLI through console or SSH/Telnet, SNMP versions 1, 2c and 3, and Cisco FindIT Network Manager. Administrators can configure individual switches locally or incorporate them into supported centralized monitoring and configuration workflows.

How much PoE power does SG220-50P-K9 provide?

SG220-50P-K9 provides a shared 375W PoE budget across 48 powered access ports, with a maximum of 30W per port. The aggregate budget does not support every powered port drawing its individual maximum simultaneously. Size the connected-device load before assigning ports to phones, cameras or wireless access points.

Which uplinks and fiber transceivers can SG220-50P-K9 use?

SG220-50P-K9 has two Gigabit RJ-45/SFP combo uplinks, with one connector active in each pair. Compatible fiber options include MGBSX1 for multimode fiber and MGBLX1 for single-mode fiber. Select the transceiver against the installed fiber and required distance; the copper and SFP connectors are not independent additional uplinks.

Does SG220-50P-K9 support redundant power supplies?

No, SG220-50P-K9 uses a fixed internal AC supply rather than redundant PSU modules. The switch accepts 100-240V AC and reaches 427W maximum consumption with PoE. A second internal supply cannot be added, so the purchase plan must not assume a redundant power-supply configuration or a separately orderable PSU module.

Is SG220-50P suitable for a standard equipment rack?

Yes, SG220-50P is a 1U rack-mount switch measuring 440 mm wide, 44 mm high and 350 mm deep, with a weight of 5.28 kg. The original package includes a mounting kit. Confirm the mounting hardware included with the selected condition and allow space for cabling and ventilation.

Which older switches does SG220-50P-K9 replace?

SG220-50P-K9 replaces the discontinued SG200-50FP-AU, SG200-50FP-BR, SG200-50FP-EU, SG200-50FP-NA and SG200-50FP-UK regional models. These predecessors are 50-port Gigabit PoE smart switches. Match the regional ordering form to the destination, and distinguish this legacy replacement from the current successor when planning further purchases.

What is the lifecycle status of SG220-50P-K9?

SG220-50P-K9 is discontinued: end of sale was July 30, 2022, software maintenance ended July 30, 2023, and the last date of Cisco support is July 31, 2027. CBS220-48P-4G-NA is the United States replacement. Reseller stock availability does not extend the original switch's Cisco support milestones.

What is the difference between SG220-50P-K9 and SG220-50-K9-NA?

SG220-50P-K9 supplies PoE+ to its access ports, whereas SG220-50-K9-NA provides data connectivity without endpoint power. Both models are discontinued members of the 220 Series. The powered model fits legacy installations requiring switch-supplied endpoint power; the non-PoE model fits existing installations where connected equipment has separate power.

What is the difference between SG220-50P-K9 and SG220-26P-K9-NA?

SG220-50P-K9 has 48 Gigabit access ports, while SG220-26P-K9-NA has 24 Gigabit access ports. Both models are discontinued, so the density comparison concerns legacy expansion or replacement requirements. The larger model suits existing endpoint schedules needing more connections; the smaller model suits installations retaining a 24-port access layout.

What is the difference between SG220-50P-K9 and CBS220-48P-4G-NA?

CBS220-48P-4G-NA provides four dedicated Gigabit SFP uplinks, whereas SG220-50P-K9 provides two Gigabit RJ-45/SFP combo uplinks. The replacement separates fiber uplinks from the access connections instead of sharing copper and SFP connectors. The discontinued SG220 model suits legacy matching; CBS220 suits migration to the current replacement with dedicated fiber uplinks.

What conditions and warranty does ORM offer for SG220-50P-K9?

ORM offers SG220-50P-K9 new sealed or certified refurbished: new units carry up to a 3-year extended warranty, refurbished units up to 1 year. Every condition has 30-day returns, terms apply. Cisco's limited lifetime hardware warranty has 1-year fan/PSU coverage and ends no later than July 31, 2027, subject to eligibility.
