C9500-48X-E combines 40 fixed 1/10G SFP/SFP+ ports with the included C9500-NM-8X, adding eight modular 1/10G connections for campus aggregation. This managed Layer 3, non-PoE bundle occupies one rack unit and carries Network Essentials. Cisco Catalyst 9500 serves enterprise core and distribution networks that aggregate fiber connections from access switches rather than powering endpoint devices. The discontinued C9500-48X-A changes the license to Network Advantage while retaining the same physical bundle. Within the Catalyst 9000 family, this configuration addresses existing 10G fiber infrastructure with a fixed chassis and a removable uplink module. A chassis-only quotation is not equivalent to this bundle: the included C9500-NM-8X is part of the ordered configuration, not an empty expansion bay awaiting a separate purchase.

960 Gbps switching capacity provides the switching fabric for the populated bundle, while 720 Mpps forwarding defines its packet-processing ceiling. OSPF supports up to 1000 routes under Network Essentials, alongside Static, RIP, EIGRP Stub, PBR and VRRP; PIM Stub multicast has a separate 1000-route limit. Full BGP, EIGRP and IS-IS require Network Advantage rather than additional physical ports. C9500-48X-E uses 16 GB of DRAM for operation and 16 GB of flash for local software storage. UADP 2.0 forwarding supports a 64000-entry MAC table, with resource allocation dependent on the selected template. Local CLI and embedded WebUI provide configuration paths without requiring a central controller. Five FAN-T4-R fans direct airflow from front to back, and an optional PWR-C4-950WAC-R/2 adds a second internal AC supply where redundant power is specified.

C9500-48X-E identifies a Catalyst 9500 bundle: C9500 names the series, 48 denotes the bundle's port count, X identifies 10G connectivity, and E means Network Essentials. The hardware comprises 40 fixed connections plus eight connections on the included C9500-NM-8X, rather than 48 fixed chassis ports.
C9500-48X-E supports local CLI and embedded WebUI management, with Catalyst Center integration and Meraki cloud monitoring options. NETCONF and RESTCONF provide API access using YANG models. Subscription entitlements and software compatibility govern centrally integrated functions; ordinary local configuration does not require deployment of Catalyst Center.
C9500-48X-E is discontinued, with end of sale on April 30, 2024, and last support on April 30, 2029. New service attachment ended April 30, 2025. Existing eligible coverage remains subject to its contract, and C9500-48Y4C is the current replacement for migration planning.
ORM offers C9500-48X-E new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to a 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for refurbished units. C9500-48X-E ships with one PWR-C4-950WAC-R AC power supply and an empty second supply bay. Order PWR-C4-950WAC-R/2 for redundant AC power. PWR-C4-950WDC-R is a supported DC alternative. The 950W supply rating is not the switch's power consumption, so specify the required input type before ordering.
C9500-48X-E includes Network Essentials, while discontinued C9500-48X-A includes Network Advantage on the same 40-port chassis and C9500-NM-8X bundle. Both models are discontinued. Essentials serves routed-access requirements; Advantage adds full routing and two-member StackWise Virtual for deployments requiring those licensed functions. Neither license changes the bundle's physical connections.
C9500-48X-E includes eight 10G uplinks on C9500-NM-8X, whereas discontinued C9500-40X-2Q-E includes two 40G uplinks on C9500-NM-2Q. Both bundles are discontinued and retain 40 fixed 10G connections with Network Essentials. The former fits existing 10G uplink plans; the latter fits installed 40G connections rather than additional 10G port density.
C9500-48X-E provides 10G connections, while its current replacement C9500-48Y4C supports 48 native 1/10/25G connections. The discontinued bundle includes C9500-NM-8X rather than native 25G interfaces. Existing 10G hardware standards can justify the older spare; new purchases specifying native 25G should use C9500-48Y4C with the required license.
