960 Gbps switching capacity defines the maximum fabric throughput, while 720 Mpps forwarding sets the packet-processing ceiling. 1000 dynamically learned routes is the OSPF routed-access limit under the supplied tier; static routing, RIPv1, RIPv2, and RIPng cover other basic routing requirements. PBR and VRRP provide policy and gateway options, while PIM Stub supports limited multicast participation. BGP, full EIGRP, IS-IS, and StackWise Virtual are not enabled by the included network license. C9500-40X-E identifies a Catalyst 9500 switch with 40 fixed 1/10G interfaces and Network Essentials. C9500 names the family, 40 gives the fixed port count, X identifies the 10-Gigabit Ethernet configuration, and E selects the perpetual Network Essentials tier rather than Network Advantage.
C9500-40X-E supports local CLI and WebUI management, with Catalyst Center management and Meraki dashboard monitoring available through compatible software and subscriptions. Network Essentials supplies the on-box network entitlement. C9500-40X-E supports static routing, RIPv1, RIPv2, RIPng, and OSPF routed access under Network Essentials. OSPF routed access is limited to 1000 dynamically learned routes. PBR, VRRP, and PIM Stub are included; BGP, full EIGRP, and IS-IS require Network Advantage rather than this supplied tier.
C9500-40X-E cannot enable StackWise Virtual with its supplied Network Essentials license. Network Advantage unlocks a two-switch StackWise Virtual design on this hardware family. The pair operates as one logical switch using Ethernet links rather than dedicated stack ports, so licensing and interconnect selection must precede deployment.
C9500-40X-E ships with one PWR-C4-950WAC-R and supports a second internal supply for redundancy. The second bay is not equivalent to a second installed supply. Specify PWR-C4-950WAC-R/2 when redundant AC power is required, and confirm both supplies are included in the quoted configuration rather than assuming redundancy from two bays.
Catalyst 9500 switches retain their perpetual network-license capabilities when an add-on subscription expires. Subscription features require renewal; otherwise, deactivate the add-on license and reload the switch to continue with the base capabilities. This distinction matters when buying used hardware with an expired subscription rather than a new software term.
