Fanless Access Switching Near Powered Ethernet Endpoints

CMICR-4PC is a fanless, managed Layer 2 switch with four Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ access ports and two fixed Gigabit uplinks: one RJ-45 copper port and one SFP cage. The DIN rail model belongs to the Cisco Catalyst Micro Switches family and runs the LAN Lite image of Cisco IOS. Its distributed-access role places Ethernet connectivity near IP phones, cameras, and wireless access points rather than concentrating every connection in a wiring closet. Fiber-to-the-desk deployments are its defining use case. The discontinued CMICR-4PS differs by carrying two SFP uplinks instead of the mixed copper/SFP arrangement. Neither configuration provides a removable network-module expansion bay, so uplink selection is part of choosing the hardware rather than a later module upgrade.

Technical Details

12 Gbps switching capacity and 8.928 Mpps forwarding at 64-byte packet size define the forwarding envelope for local access traffic. MAC learning accommodates 8192 entries, while 512 MB DRAM and 256 MB flash support the operating image and configuration. CMICR-4PC supports LACP for Ethernet channeling, LLDP and LLDP-MED for endpoint discovery, and SNMP v3 for monitoring and control. Port-based ACLs apply traffic policies, while 802.1X, TACACS+, and RADIUS support authenticated network access. Secure Boot limits startup to signed, authorized software. Inter-VLAN routing requires a separate gateway because the embedded software provides no Layer 3 routing. Four egress queues per port support traffic scheduling. Energy Efficient Ethernet moves idle interfaces into low-power operation, while protected ports restrict direct communication between endpoints. Perpetual PoE maintains endpoint power during software upgrades and reboots; Fast PoE restores endpoint power within 5 seconds after power returns.

Ordering

ORM Systems offers CMICR-4PC new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to 3-year extended warranty on new units and up to 1 year on certified refurbished units; every condition includes 30-day returns, terms apply. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested, with every port linked at rated speed, PoE output verified under load on every powered port, optics bay recognition checked, firmware verified, and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify the required condition and accessories on the purchase order. PO accepted, Net-30 for government, RMA with advance replacement, and regional stock/RMA across the UK, EU, US, and MEA support enterprise and volume orders.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Extended-node license dependency

SD-Access extended-node deployment requires Cisco DNA Advantage and an upstream fabric-edge-capable switch. Cisco DNA Essentials covers basic automation and assurance rather than the SD-Access extended-node feature.

Shared endpoint power allocation

CMICR-4PC requires endpoint power sizing: four ports × 30W equals 120W, exceeding the 62W shared budget with PSU-L-80W-ADPT or PSU-L-74W-ADPT. Include the selected external adapter on the order.

Discontinued hardware procurement window

CMICR-4PC passed end of sale on April 30, 2026. New service attachments and software maintenance end April 30, 2027; align spare quantities and service arrangements before issuing the purchase order.

Best For

Multi-Site Configuration Rollout

When several sites need a consistent initial configuration, the embedded Network Plug and Play agent can automate image and configuration delivery. Deployment requires a preconfigured PnP server managing site devices and their files. Specify the onboarding configuration and server readiness before placing the purchase order.

Existing Duct Installation

When replacing hardware inside an existing cable duct, mounting compatibility determines the accessory order. M45-compatible ducts permit direct installation, while a DIN rail installation uses CMICR-CLIP-DIN. Identify the existing mounting arrangement and include the appropriate mounting accessories before issuing the purchase order.

Recovery Image Staging

When staging replacement units with a removable recovery image, CMICR-MSD-1G can hold boot images and configuration files. Booting from the card requires configuration, and microSD access must be enabled again after reload. Include the card and verify the intended recovery procedure before ordering replacement quantities.

Not Suitable If

Routing between local VLANs

CMICR-4PC provides Layer 2 switching without Layer 3 routing. Traffic between VLANs therefore requires a separate routed gateway; LAN Lite does not provide a routed-access upgrade.

A single managed hardware stack

CMICR-4PC does not support hardware stacking. Centralized management does not combine multiple units into one hardware stack, and no stacking expansion path exists for this family.

Operating power through an uplink

CMICR-4PC requires an external AC/DC adapter and cannot receive operating power through an uplink. A powered upstream connection cannot replace the local adapter for this model.

Questions & Answers

What does the CMICR-4PC part number identify?

CMICR-4PC identifies the Catalyst Micro Switch wall-jack configuration with one copper uplink and one SFP uplink. The complete configuration provides four Gigabit PoE+ access ports and LAN Lite software. Its mixed copper/SFP uplinks distinguish this model from the family's dual-SFP wall-jack configuration.

How is CMICR-4PC configured and managed?

CMICR-4PC supports the Cisco IOS CLI through its micro USB console, SSH, or Telnet, plus SNMP management. Cisco Prime Infrastructure and Cisco DNA Center provide centralized management paths. Network Plug and Play supports automated onboarding when a preconfigured PnP server supplies the required images and configurations.

How much PoE power does CMICR-4PC provide?

CMICR-4PC provides a shared 62W PoE budget with PSU-L-80W-ADPT or PSU-L-74W-ADPT, with a 30W maximum on an individual access port. All four access ports support PoE+, but the shared allocation prevents every port from supplying its individual maximum simultaneously. Adapter selection determines the available budget.

Which uplinks does CMICR-4PC include?

CMICR-4PC includes one fixed 1G RJ-45 copper uplink and one fixed 1G SFP uplink. These are separate interfaces rather than a shared copper/SFP combo port. The SFP cage accepts an appropriate compatible transceiver; uplink expansion does not use a removable network-module bay.

What licensing options apply to CMICR-4PC?

CMICR-4PC ships with LAN Lite, while Cisco DNA Essentials and Cisco DNA Advantage cover centralized automation and assurance features. Cisco DNA Advantage is required for SD-Access extended-node operation, which also requires an upstream fabric-edge-capable switch. The base operating image is Cisco IOS LAN Lite.

Can Catalyst Micro Switches route between VLANs?

No, Catalyst Micro Switches provide Layer 2 switching without Layer 3 routing functionality. VLAN traffic requiring a routed hop must use a separate gateway. LAN Lite is the supported embedded feature set, so these switches should not be specified as local inter-VLAN routers.

Can Catalyst Micro Switches form a hardware stack?

No, Catalyst Micro Switches do not support hardware stacking on any model. Multiple units can participate in centralized management, but that does not create a shared hardware stack. Specify each unit as an independent switch rather than ordering stacking cables or planning a stack expansion.

Which mounting accessories fit the CMICR-4PC?

CMICR-4PC supports direct installation in M45-compatible cable ducts and DIN rail mounting with CMICR-CLIP-DIN. Other duct arrangements use mounting brackets and bezels matched to the installation. Mounting accessories are optional, so identify the existing duct or rail arrangement before finalizing the accessory order.

What is the lifecycle status of CMICR-4PC?

CMICR-4PC reached end of sale on April 30, 2026, with final support scheduled for April 30, 2031. Software maintenance ends April 30, 2027, and Cisco IOS 15.2(8)E is the final supported release. No direct replacement is available for the Catalyst Micro Switches.

What is the difference between CMICR-4PC and CMICR-4PS?

CMICR-4PC has one copper and one SFP uplink; CMICR-4PS has two SFP uplinks. Both models are discontinued. CMICR-4PC matches existing mixed-media installations requiring like-for-like replacement, while CMICR-4PS matches existing dual-fiber installations. The distinction is uplink media, not a different access-port count.

What is the difference between CMICR-4PC and CMICR-4PT?

CMICR-4PC requires an external AC/DC adapter; CMICR-4PT can also receive operating power through its uplink PD port. Both models are discontinued. CMICR-4PC matches locally powered replacement installations, while CMICR-4PT matches existing deployments that rely on upstream PoE input for switch operating power.

What conditions and warranties does ORM Systems offer for CMICR-4PC?

ORM Systems offers CMICR-4PC new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to 3-year extended warranty for new units and up to 1 year for refurbished units. Both conditions include 30-day returns; terms apply. Cisco's enhanced limited lifetime warranty is separate, subject to eligibility, and bounded by April 30, 2031.
