CDB-8U is a fanless, managed Layer 2 switch with eight 10/100 Fast Ethernet UPOE downlinks and two fixed 10/100/1000 copper uplinks. Its compact desktop chassis belongs to the Catalyst Digital Building family, serving low-voltage LED lighting, HVAC controls, security devices, and building sensors through LAN Lite software. The fixed copper connections require neither an uplink module nor a transceiver, but they provide no direct fiber termination. The discontinued CDB-8P supplies PoE+ rather than UPOE, separating the two versions by endpoint power capability. This Fast Ethernet UPOE switch prioritizes power delivery to building equipment rather than Gigabit connectivity at each endpoint; devices needing faster local links fall outside its access-port design.
CDB-8U price for new stock is $545.74, a 63.1% saving from the Cisco list price of $1,479.00. CDB-8U refurb price is $558.48. CDB-8U is in stock and available for next-day dispatch. (terms applied)

5.6 Gbps full-duplex switching capacity supports the installed Ethernet port configuration, while 4.2 Mpps forwarding handles 64-byte packets. 480W of available PoE power supplies connected endpoints, distinct from the switch's own operating requirements. CDB-8U combines 512 MB of DRAM with 256 MB of flash for its Cisco IOS image and running functions. An 8192-entry MAC table and support for 64 VLANs define local segmentation scale; 180 ACLs cover MAC, IPv4, and IPv6 traffic. LACP aggregates Ethernet connections, while LLDP-MED identifies attached endpoints and SNMPv3 enables network monitoring. The CoAP proxy supports communication with building systems. Perpetual UPOE maintains endpoint power during upgrades and reboots, and Fast UPOE restores endpoint power within 5 seconds after AC returns. Inter-VLAN routing is outside the feature set, so an upstream routing device must handle traffic between subnets.
Order CDB-8U new sealed or certified refurbished, specifying CDB-MNT-FLEX-C14= or CDB-MNT-FLEX-DIR= for the required power connection. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on, POST, clean boot, every port's rated-speed link, PSU status, and PoE output under load on every powered port; firmware is verified and configurations are wiped to factory default. ORM provides up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units and up to 1 year on certified refurbished units, plus 30-day returns on every condition; terms apply. Submit enterprise and volume requirements by PO, with Net-30 for government orders and RMA with advance replacement.

For lighting projects with loads approaching 60W per connection, confirm that every luminaire supports Cisco UPOE before selecting the switch. The power-delivery requirement is separate from the endpoint's bandwidth requirement. Build the purchase order around the endpoint inventory and its individual power requirements, not just the number of cables.
Where several building switches must share a cabinet, CDB-MNT-RACK5-C14= accommodates five switches in a 5U chassis and removes the need for individual flexible mounts. The accessory is separate from the compact switch body. Specify the chassis quantity and country-specific power cords on the purchase order.
During bench staging, connecting the USB console disables input on the RJ-45 console because USB takes precedence. Console output remains available on both connectors. Prepare the console cable and workstation driver requirements before the equipment arrives, and specify the console-access method in the staging instructions attached to the order.
Gigabit connectivity for powered endpoints
Eight powered downlinks operate at 10/100 Mbps, not Gigabit Ethernet. The separate Gigabit copper uplinks do not increase the speed available to attached endpoints.
Direct fiber uplinks
Both built-in uplinks are 10/100/1000 copper ports. CDB-8U provides no SFP cages or removable uplink bay, so fiber connections cannot terminate directly on this chassis.
Routing between local VLANs
LAN Lite provides Layer 2 switching rather than routed access. Networks requiring the switch itself to route between VLANs need a separate routing-capable device.

CDB-8U identifies the Catalyst Digital Building UPOE switch: CDB represents the family, 8 identifies eight Fast Ethernet access ports, and U identifies UPOE. The complete configuration includes two Gigabit copper uplinks and LAN Lite software. Neither the uplink configuration nor the software image has a separate suffix in this part number.
CDB-8U supports console CLI, Cisco Configuration Professional for Catalyst web management, SNMP, and Bluetooth apps for Android or iOS. RJ-45 and USB console ports provide local access. Cisco Prime Infrastructure and Cisco Network Assistant support centralized administration, while Cisco Active Advisor supplies cloud inventory information. Bluetooth access requires a removable radio.
CDB-8U reached end of sale on April 30, 2025, and Cisco support ends April 30, 2030, subject to entitlement. Software maintenance releases and new service attachments ended April 30, 2026. No direct one-to-one replacement exists, so migration requires a new design rather than an equivalent drop-in successor.
ORM offers CDB-8U new sealed with up to a 3-year extended warranty, or certified refurbished with up to 1 year. Both conditions include 30-day returns; terms apply. Cisco's separate Enhanced Limited Lifetime Warranty covers the original owner subject to discontinuance limits; Cisco service ends April 30, 2030.
CDB-8U ships with the LAN Lite feature set for Cisco IOS, covering its Layer 2 operating role. The included software tier is part of the switch configuration rather than a separate license suffix on this PID. Specify LAN Lite on the quote and keep software entitlement separate from any service-contract requirement.
CDB-8U was named as a replacement option for CDB-3850-24U-L and CDB-3850-48U-L, both discontinued bundles with end-of-sale dates of October 30, 2020. Their Cisco support ended October 31, 2025. The eight-port replacement is not a like-for-like port-density substitute, and CDB-8U has itself reached end of sale.
CDB-8U provides 480W of UPOE power with up to 60W per port, while CDB-8P provides 240W of PoE+ power with up to 30W per port. Both models are discontinued. For existing-system spares, CDB-8U serves higher-draw UPOE endpoints; CDB-8P serves endpoints within the lower PoE+ limit.
CDB-8U supplies up to 60W on each of eight Cisco UPOE ports, with 480W available across the powered downlinks. The total supports eight ports at that stated maximum, but endpoint negotiation and compatibility still determine delivery. Check each connected device's UPOE requirements rather than treating all powered devices as interchangeable.
The Catalyst Digital Building switch requires a compatible mounting and power assembly: CDB-MNT-FLEX-C14= provides an IEC C14 connection for 100–240V AC, while CDB-MNT-FLEX-DIR= provides direct wiring for 100–277V AC. One flexible mount powers one switch. CDB-MNT-RACK5-C14= instead holds five switches without individual flexible mounts; confirm the selected assembly with the order.
No, CDB-8U operates as a Layer 2 switch with LAN Lite rather than a routed-access device. VLANs can separate endpoint traffic, but an upstream routing device must carry traffic between IP subnets. Include that routing dependency in the network design instead of treating the switch as a local gateway.
No, the Catalyst Digital Building UPOE switch uses a fixed internal AC power supply rather than redundant internal power modules. Its 600W power rating matters for upstream electrical provisioning, not endpoint power availability. Power enters through the compatible mounting assembly, so the purchase must include the required power-connection arrangement.
CDB-8U has two fixed 10/100/1000 copper uplink ports in addition to its powered Fast Ethernet access ports. Both uplinks use RJ-45 connections, not SFP optics, and no removable uplink module is required. Specify copper cabling and confirm the upstream port speeds before placing the purchase order.
