ME-3400G-12CS-D is a managed Gigabit Ethernet access switch for service-provider customer handoffs and small Layer 2 aggregation. Twelve dual-purpose interfaces each offer a 10/100/1000 RJ-45 connection or an SFP connection, while four separate fixed SFP uplinks connect toward the provider network. Copper and fiber handoffs therefore share the same chassis without requiring an uplink expansion card. The Cisco ME 3400 family serves Metro Ethernet access rather than unmanaged desktop connectivity, with software selection determining the available service features. Two fixed internal DC supplies occupy a 1U rack-mount chassis. The discontinued ME-3400G-12CS-A has the same interface arrangement but uses AC power, so the power source remains an important distinction when matching an existing installation.

32 Gbps switching capacity handles traffic across the fixed interface set, while 26 Mpps forwarding defines the packet-processing ceiling. The address table accommodates 8000 MAC entries for Ethernet forwarding. ME-3400G-12CS-D contains 128 MB of DRAM and 32 MB of flash for operating software and configuration storage. Administrators can use the console CLI, Telnet, SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, and SNMPv3; cryptographic Cisco IOS images also provide SSH. RSTP supplies a spanning-tree option for Layer 2 topology control, while ingress policing and egress shaping apply traffic policy at the access edge. Routing requires the appropriate software image rather than following automatically from the hardware configuration. 70W maximum consumption provides the chassis-load figure for DC feed sizing. The operating range is 0°C to 50°C, which sets the environmental boundary for enclosure and ventilation planning. The fixed interfaces do not provide 10G connectivity.
ORM Systems offers ME-3400G-12CS-D new sealed with up to a 3-year extended warranty and certified refurbished with up to 1 year of warranty; 30-day returns apply to every condition, terms apply. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, every port linking at rated speed, optics bay recognition, and clean boot; firmware is verified and configuration wiped to factory default. Specify the condition, supplied software image, optical transceivers, and quantity on the purchase order. POs are accepted, government buyers receive Net-30, and RMA with advance replacement is available for enterprise and volume procurement.

When a maintenance program needs a like-for-like spare, identify ME-3400G-12CS-D on the purchase order rather than using a generic Gigabit-switch description. ORM supports regional stock and RMA handling across the UK, EU, US, and MEA; specify the receiving region, required condition, and spare quantity before the PO.
When a test environment must reproduce larger Ethernet frames, the Gigabit interfaces support bridging with an MTU of 9000 bytes. Keep that Layer 2 frame-size setting separate from IP routing and the far-end device's limits; specify the required MTU and acceptance traffic before the PO.
10G uplinks or faster
ME-3400G-12CS-D has fixed 1G SFP uplinks without an uplink expansion bay. Faster transceivers cannot turn those interfaces into 10G connections.
Hot-swappable power supply modules
ME-3400G-12CS-D contains two fixed DC supplies rather than removable power modules. Supply redundancy does not provide power-module replacement while the chassis remains in service.
Active Cisco hardware support
Cisco support for ME-3400G-12CS-D ended January 31, 2019. Purchasing a new-sealed or refurbished unit does not restart the retired Cisco service lifecycle.

ME-3400G-12CS-D identifies a Gigabit Ethernet access model in the ME 3400 family: 12CS corresponds to twelve dual-purpose copper/SFP ports, and D identifies DC power. The configuration also includes four separate SFP uplinks and two fixed internal DC supplies. Software image selection is separate from those hardware identifiers.
ME-3400G-12CS-D supports console CLI, Telnet, SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, and SNMPv3 management; cryptographic Cisco IOS images also provide SSH. CiscoWorks supports centralized administration. Confirm the supplied image when encrypted remote administration is required, rather than assuming SSH availability follows from the hardware part number alone.
ME-3400G-12CS-D is discontinued: Cisco ended sales on January 9, 2014, and support on January 31, 2019. Cisco hardware service has therefore ended, regardless of whether an individual unit is new sealed or refurbished. Procurement should account for that closed support lifecycle when approving the purchase.
ORM Systems offers ME-3400G-12CS-D new sealed with up to a 3-year extended warranty, or certified refurbished with up to 1 year of warranty. Both conditions include 30-day returns, terms apply. Cisco's hardware warranty and service ended January 31, 2019; ORM's warranty is separate and does not reactivate Cisco support.
ME-3400G-12CS-D supports METROBASE for standard Layer 2 services, METROACCESS for enhanced Layer 2 VPN services, and METROIPACCESS for Layer 3 VPN services. METROIPACCESS adds IP routing, Multi-VRF CE, and PBR. Confirm the licensed image supplied with the unit before including advanced routing functions in the purchase specification.
ME-3400G-12CS-D supports sixteen simultaneously usable Ethernet connections: twelve dual-purpose copper/SFP interfaces and four additional SFP-only uplinks. Each dual-purpose interface uses its RJ-45 connector or its SFP cage, not both simultaneously. The paired copper connectors therefore do not create another twelve independent switch ports.
ME-3400G-12CS-D requires DC input between -72V and -36V and contains two fixed internal DC supplies. Chassis consumption is 55W typical and 70W maximum, so feed planning must use the appropriate equipment load. This is not an AC-input model, and its supplies are not removable power modules.
ME-3400G-12CS-D supports Gigabit SFP options including GLC-SX-MM=, GLC-LH-SM=, and GLC-ZX-SM=. Match the selected transceiver to the installed fiber, link requirements, and far-end optics. The SFP interfaces are fixed switch ports; inserting a transceiver does not add an uplink expansion card or enable 10G operation.
ME-3400G-12CS-D uses redundant DC power, while ME-3400G-12CS-A uses redundant AC power with the same twelve dual-purpose ports and four SFP uplinks. Both models are discontinued. The DC version matches existing DC-powered installations; the AC version corresponds to AC-powered spare requirements rather than a current Cisco-supported refresh.
ME-3400G-12CS-D provides twelve dual-purpose ports and four SFP uplinks, whereas ME-3400G-2CS-A provides two dual-purpose ports and two SFP uplinks. Both models are discontinued. Existing installations needing more customer handoffs use the larger configuration; lower-density spare requirements correspond to the smaller model's reduced interface allocation.
