ME-3400G-12CS-A is a managed Gigabit Ethernet access switch for service-provider customer premises, combining 12 dual-purpose copper or SFP connections with four fixed 1G SFP uplinks in a rack-mount 1U chassis. Each dual-purpose connection uses either its RJ-45 interface or its paired SFP interface, not both simultaneously. The Cisco ME 3400 Series supports Metro Ethernet customer handoffs rather than powered endpoint access; this model does not provide PoE. Two fixed redundant AC supplies distinguish this configuration from the discontinued ME-3400G-12CS-D, which uses DC power. The fixed uplink architecture accepts SFP transceivers rather than removable uplink cards, keeping the purchase configuration focused on the required copper and fiber connections.

32 Gbps switching capacity provides the forwarding bandwidth for the connected Ethernet services, while a 26 Mpps forwarding rate establishes the packet-processing ceiling for traffic planning. ME-3400G-12CS-A combines 128 MB of DRAM with 32 MB of flash memory for software operation and local image storage. An 8000-entry MAC address table provides the address-learning limit to check against the connected estate. Cisco IOS supplies the command-line operating environment, with cryptographic images supporting SSH access. 80W maximum power consumption is the electrical-load figure to use when allocating cabinet power; it is not an endpoint-power budget. The 0°C to 50°C operating range also needs to accommodate the temperature inside the installed cabinet, rather than the room temperature alone. There are no 10G uplinks or removable uplink expansion cards.
Choose ME-3400G-12CS-A in new sealed or certified refurbished condition, and specify quantity and condition on the purchase order. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, rated-speed links on every port, clean boot, optics bay recognition and PSU status; firmware is verified and configurations are wiped to factory default. ORM Systems provides up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units and up to 1 year on certified refurbished units, with 30-day returns on every condition; terms apply. Cisco coverage ended January 31, 2019. Enterprise and volume orders can use POs, with Net-30 for government.

When a repeat rollout must preserve provider-controlled service activation, UNI/ENI ports start disabled and do not switch locally by default. Treat commissioning as a configuration task rather than an unmanaged plug-in installation. Specify the port roles, activation checklist and approved configuration for each site before issuing the PO.
When an installed estate needs replacement hardware across regional operations, ORM Systems supports stock and RMA handling in the UK, EU, US and MEA. RMA with advance replacement is available. Put the destination, condition and required spare quantity on the PO so the replacement arrangement is specified before ordering.
10G uplinks to the provider network
The uplinks stop at 1G. N540-6Z18G-SYS-A provides six 1G/10G SFP+ connections, but also changes the access arrangement to 18 dedicated 1G SFP ports.
Hot-swappable redundant power supply modules
The two redundant AC supplies are fixed, not hot-swappable modules. This configuration does not meet a purchasing requirement for replacing an internal power supply while the chassis remains installed and operating.

ME-3400G-12CS-A identifies a Gigabit ME 3400 access switch: ME-3400G identifies the Gigabit model family, 12CS denotes 12 dual-purpose copper/SFP ports, and -A selects AC power. The configuration also includes four SFP uplinks and two fixed redundant AC supplies. The power suffix does not identify a software tier.
The Cisco ME 3400 Series is managed through the Cisco IOS CLI using the console or Telnet, with SSH available through a cryptographic image. SNMP versions 1, 2c and 3 support network management, and CiscoWorks integration is supported. Specify the required secure-access image before ordering.
ME-3400G-12CS-A is discontinued: end of sale was January 9, 2014, and Cisco support ended January 31, 2019. Its original replacement, ME-3400EG-12CS-M, is also discontinued, as is the intermediate N520-4G4Z-A. The forward migration chain reaches N540-6Z18G-SYS-A rather than stopping at either retired replacement.
ORM Systems offers ME-3400G-12CS-A new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units and up to 1 year on refurbished units. Returns are available for 30 days in either condition; terms apply. Cisco hardware service and warranty coverage ended January 31, 2019.
ME-3400G-12CS-A supports METROBASE, METROACCESS and METROIPACCESS software images; the -A suffix specifies AC power rather than a software tier. METROBASE supplies Layer 2 services, METROACCESS adds Layer 2 tunneling, and METROIPACCESS enables Layer 3 routing. Specify the required image on the PO rather than relying on the hardware PID alone.
The Cisco ME 3400 Series supports fiber transceivers including GLC-SX-MM= for Gigabit SX and GLC-LH-SM= for Gigabit LH connections. Match the transceiver to the installed fiber and far-end interface. These are SFP transceivers for built-in cages, not removable cards that add uplink ports.
Yes, ME-3400G-12CS-A has two fixed redundant AC power supplies, but they are not hot-swappable power modules. Fixed redundancy should not be confused with a chassis offering removable supply bays. Specify the AC configuration for the existing electrical feeds, and do not add modular power-supply spares intended for another model.
ME-3400G-12CS-A uses redundant AC power supplies, whereas ME-3400G-12CS-D uses redundant DC supplies. Both models are discontinued, so this distinction concerns matching an existing installation rather than selecting a current replacement. The AC version matches legacy AC-fed locations; the DC version matches legacy installations with the appropriate DC feeds.
ME-3400G-12CS-A provides 12 dual-purpose access connections, while ME-3400G-2CS-A provides two. Both belong to the discontinued ME 3400 Series. For legacy replacement planning, the larger configuration matches sites needing more customer handoffs, while the smaller configuration matches an existing demarcation point needing only two dual-purpose connections.
ME-3400G-12CS-A has 1G uplinks, while N540-6Z18G-SYS-A provides six 1G/10G SFP+ connections. The successor also has 18 dedicated 1G SFP ports, changing the access-port arrangement. The retired ME model concerns legacy Gigabit replacements; N540-6Z18G-SYS-A suits migration requirements that include 10G connections and a revised fiber-port plan.
