ME-3400-24FS-A is an AC-powered ME 3400 Ethernet access switch with 24 100Mbps fiber SFP access ports and two Gigabit Ethernet SFP uplinks. The managed, rack-mount 1U chassis serves service-provider Ethernet access rather than a copper desktop or powered-endpoint role. Its optical access interfaces separate subscriber connections from the higher-speed network-facing links. The 24-port Fast Ethernet fiber switch provides Layer 2 access services for installations retaining existing optical subscriber handoffs. Non-PoE operation means attached equipment needs its own power source. The uplink architecture is fixed, with no removable network-module bay to populate, so additional uplink cards are not part of this hardware configuration.

8.8 Gbps switching capacity and 6.5 Mpps forwarding define the traffic envelope for the access interfaces and network uplinks. The memory configuration combines 128 MB DRAM with 32 MB flash for the running system and stored software. ME-3400-24FS-A supports an 8000-entry MAC address table, which bounds address learning when consolidating customer connections. Management uses the Cisco IOS CLI through the console or Telnet, and cryptographic images add SSH; SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3 support network management. 70W maximum consumption provides the electrical-planning limit, while 50W typical consumption describes normal operation. The 100–240V AC input accepts 50–60Hz supply power. A 0°C to 50°C operating range sets the ambient-temperature boundary for equipment placement. Different optics do not convert the subscriber cages into native Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.
ORM Systems supplies ME-3400-24FS-A in new sealed and certified refurbished condition, with up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units and up to 1 year on certified refurbished units; every condition includes 30-day returns, with terms applying. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, clean boot, rated-speed links on every port, and optics bay recognition, then firmware verified and wiped to factory default. Specify this switch's condition and required optical connections on the purchase order. POs are accepted, government buyers receive Net-30 terms, and RMA includes advance replacement, with regional stock and RMA across the UK, EU, US, and MEA.

When extending an existing carrier Ethernet service across additional customer sites, customer separation and VLAN allocation matter more than matching chassis appearance. UNI/NNI roles distinguish subscriber-facing and network-facing connections, while the switch supports 1005 VLANs. Specify the port-role policy and reserve the required service VLANs before the PO.
When preparing equipment for an established fiber access network, match frame-size requirements before loading the deployment configuration. Fast Ethernet forwarding supports a 1998-byte MTU, while Gigabit Ethernet bridging supports 9000 bytes. Check both sides of each handoff and include the required frame-size verification in the staging requirements before the PO.
10G uplinks to distribution
The fixed uplinks support Gigabit Ethernet, not 10G. A network requiring 10G distribution connections needs different hardware with native 10G uplink interfaces.
Native Gigabit subscriber fiber connections
The 24 subscriber SFP cages operate at 100Mbps. Installing Gigabit optics does not upgrade those interfaces; Gigabit subscriber handoffs require different access hardware.
Active Cisco manufacturer support
Cisco support ended on January 31, 2021. This model cannot satisfy a purchase requirement for equipment still within Cisco's manufacturer support lifecycle.

ME-3400-24FS-A identifies an ME 3400 Ethernet access switch: ME-3400 names the family, 24 identifies the subscriber-port count, FS corresponds to 100Mbps fiber SFP interfaces, and A denotes AC power. Two additional SFP uplinks provide Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. The part number does not identify a particular installed software image.
ME-3400-24FS-A is managed through the Cisco IOS CLI using the console or Telnet, with SSH available in a cryptographic software image. SNMP versions 1, 2c, and 3 support network management. Confirm the installed cryptographic image if encrypted remote administration is a requirement for the order.
ME-3400-24FS-A is discontinued: Cisco ended sales on January 5, 2016, and support on January 31, 2021. Cisco service has ended, so purchases must be planned around the seller's support arrangements rather than a new Cisco support contract. Treat additional units as legacy-equipment purchases.
ORM Systems offers ME-3400-24FS-A new sealed or certified refurbished, with up to a 3-year extended warranty on new units and up to 1 year on refurbished units. Returns are available for 30 days in every condition; terms apply. Cisco warranty service ended on January 31, 2021.
ME-3400-24FS-A supports selectable METROBASE, METROACCESS, and METROIPACCESS software images. METROBASE provides basic Layer 2 services, METROACCESS adds enhanced Layer 2 service features, and METROIPACCESS enables Layer 3 routing. Specify the required image with the hardware order rather than treating the AC power suffix as a software-tier identifier.
ME-3400-24FS-A has 24 100Mbps SFP access ports and two Gigabit Ethernet SFP uplinks. The access cages do not become Gigabit ports when different optics are inserted. Match each transceiver to the cage speed, fiber type, and opposite-end optics before specifying the optical connections on the order.
ME-3400-24FS-A uses an internal AC power supply accepting 100–240V AC at 50–60Hz. Maximum power consumption is 70W, compared with 50W typical consumption, so use the maximum figure for electrical planning. The AC-powered chassis does not supply PoE to attached equipment.
ME-3400-24FS-A provides 8.8 Gbps switching capacity and a 6.5 Mpps forwarding rate. The hardware includes 128 MB DRAM, 32 MB flash, and an 8000-entry MAC address table. Use those limits when matching a replacement unit to an existing configuration and traffic profile.
The ME 3400 fiber access switch is a rack-mount 1U chassis measuring 44 mm high, 445 mm wide, and 242 mm deep. Weight is 2.9 kg. Reserve space for fiber patching and power connections rather than planning from chassis depth alone when preparing the rack order.
Affected ME 3400 switches can fail to boot after a power cycle because of degraded memory. Normal operation may continue before the restart exposes the failure. A failed unit can produce no console response and cannot be recovered by repeated reboots; avoid restarting multiple deployed units simultaneously.
