Powered Endpoint Connectivity With Copper and Fiber Uplinks

SG500-28P-K9 is a managed Layer 2+ access switch with 24 Gigabit PoE+ copper ports and four fixed Gigabit uplink connections in a rack-mount 1U chassis. Two uplinks provide shared RJ-45/SFP interfaces, while the other two SFP connections can serve network links or stacking. The Cisco 500 Series supports small-business access networks that need powered endpoints and local VLAN segmentation without a modular uplink purchase. The discontinued SG500-28-K9 provides the corresponding non-PoE configuration, separating otherwise similar legacy choices by endpoint power requirements. For the SG500-28P, built-in voice VLAN handling and Auto Smartports associate attached devices with port settings. Copper and fiber connection options let the uplink medium follow the installed cabling rather than changing the access-port arrangement.

Technical Details

72 Gbps switching capacity defines the fabric available for access and uplink traffic, while 41.67 Mpps forwarding describes packet handling with 64-byte frames. 2048 IPv4 static routes support local inter-VLAN forwarding; RIP v2 and VRRP are absent on this model. SG500-28P-K9 uses 256 MB of memory and 32 MB of flash for operating software and configuration storage, with an 8 Mb packet buffer shared across ports. STP, RSTP and MSTP control redundant switching paths, while LACP combines physical connections into link aggregation groups. An address table holding 16384 MAC entries supports endpoint learning across the installation. Eight hardware queues separate traffic priorities, with strict-priority and weighted round-robin scheduling available. RADIUS and TACACS+ provide centralized administrative authentication. The two fans operate without speed control, a consideration when locating the chassis near occupied work areas.

Ordering

Order SG500-28P-K9 in new sealed or certified refurbished condition, and specify the condition and required accessories on the purchase order. Certified refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, every port linking at rated speed, clean boot, PoE output under load on every powered port and optics bay recognition; firmware is verified and configuration wiped to factory default. ORM's new-unit extended warranty is up to three years, certified refurbished coverage is up to one year, and every condition includes 30-day returns, terms apply. PO accepted, Net-30 for government and RMA with advance replacement support enterprise and volume orders across UK, EU, US and MEA.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Current migration destination

New deployment purchases should follow the migration chain to C1300-24P-4X; the intervening SG550X-24P-K9-NA and CBS350-24P-4X-NA models are also discontinued, not current alternatives.

Shared endpoint power allocation

Maximum endpoint requests total 24 × 30W = 720W, exceeding SG500-28P-K9's shared 180W allocation. Specify endpoint power limits and priorities before ordering rather than assuming every powered port can supply its individual maximum together.

Stack cable ordering constraint

Short-distance stack links require SFP-H10GB-CU1M, SFP-H10GB-CU3M or SFP-H10GB-CU5M. SG500-28P-K9 uses these cables at 5G; match the existing stack mode and reserve the participating ports before ordering.

Fiber optics ordered separately

Fiber-connected installations need compatible transceivers in addition to SG500-28P-K9. MGBLX1 provides 1000 Mbps over single-mode fiber to 10 km; specify matching fiber and remote-end optics on the purchase order.

Best For

Existing Stack Expansion

When an existing switch group needs another member, the shared control plane lets the installation retain one management IP address. Master and backup roles support stack control, while automatic numbering affects member identity. Record the existing topology and member numbering before specifying the additional unit.

Branch Configuration Standardization

When several branches need the same administrative baseline, configuration files can be edited as text and transferred with Secure Copy. CLI privilege levels 1, 7 and 15 constrain how access roles are assigned. Specify the site addressing, authentication settings and staging baseline before releasing the purchase order.

Replacement Hardware Staging

When replacement hardware needs validation before joining an installation, dual firmware images provide separate image storage for staging. Firmware upgrades can start through the console connection, and eight source ports can mirror traffic to one destination for testing. Specify the required image and test connections before ordering.

Not Suitable If

10G uplinks to distribution

SG500-28P-K9 provides 1G network uplinks; its 5G setting serves stacking. C1300-24P-4X retains 24 Gigabit access ports and provides four 10G SFP+ uplinks.

Full 30W power across every endpoint

The shared 180W budget cannot supply 24 endpoints at 30W simultaneously. Limit aggregate endpoint allocation rather than treating every PoE+ port as independently provisioned.

Dynamic routing and gateway redundancy

Static IPv4 and IPv6 routing does not provide RIP v2 route learning or VRRP gateway redundancy. SG500-28P-K9 cannot satisfy a requirement for those functions.

Current Cisco service and security maintenance

SG500-28P-K9 passed its final Cisco support date on April 30, 2023, and has security vulnerabilities without firmware fixes. C1300-24P-4X is the current migration endpoint.

Questions & Answers

What does the SG500-28P-K9 part number mean?

SG500-28P-K9 is the Gigabit 500 Series PoE+ configuration with 28 total connections: 24 copper access ports and four additional Gigabit connections. SG500 identifies the Gigabit switch family, 28 is the total connection count, and P marks PoE+. The complete ordering identifier retains the K9 suffix.

How is SG500-28P-K9 managed?

SG500-28P-K9 is managed through HTTP/HTTPS web configuration, Textview CLI over console, SSH or Telnet, and SNMP versions 1, 2c and 3. The built-in interface provides monitoring and maintenance. The Cisco 500 Series also includes FindIT device discovery and Cisco OnPlus integration in its feature set.

Is SG500-28P-K9 discontinued and still supported by Cisco?

SG500-28P-K9 is discontinued: end of sale was April 12, 2018, and Cisco support ended April 30, 2023. A sealed unit does not restart those milestones. Existing installations therefore need independent maintenance and replacement arrangements rather than relying on a new Cisco support entitlement.

What condition and warranty options does ORM Systems offer for SG500-28P-K9?

ORM Systems offers SG500-28P-K9 new sealed or certified refurbished, with new-unit extended warranty up to three years and refurbished warranty up to one year. Both conditions include 30-day returns, terms apply. Cisco's original limited lifetime hardware warranty no longer provides service; Cisco support ended April 30, 2023.

How much PoE power does SG500-28P-K9 provide?

SG500-28P-K9 provides a shared 180W PoE budget across 24 PoE+ access ports, with an individual port maximum of 30W. The aggregate budget prevents every powered port from delivering its maximum simultaneously. Size the attached-device allocation against the shared budget and configure power priorities before deployment.

What uplink ports does SG500-28P-K9 have?

SG500-28P-K9 has four fixed Gigabit uplink connections: two shared copper/SFP interfaces and two additional SFP interfaces that also support stacking. Each shared interface uses either copper or fiber, not both simultaneously. MGBLX1 supports a 1G single-mode fiber connection over distances reaching 10 km.

How many Cisco 500 Series switches can form a stack?

Cisco 500 Series true stacking joins eight members into one managed system. SG500-28P-K9 supports 5G copper stack connections using SFP-H10GB-CU1M, SFP-H10GB-CU3M or SFP-H10GB-CU5M. The cable lengths are 1 m, 3 m and 5 m respectively, so specify the cable PID for each required connection.

What routing capabilities does SG500-28P-K9 include?

SG500-28P-K9 supports static IPv4 and IPv6 routing rather than dynamic routing, making its feature classification Layer 2+. IPv4 capacity reaches 2048 static routes with 256 IP interfaces; IPv6 supports 2048 static routes with 128 interfaces. RIP v2 and VRRP are not available on this model.

What power supply and cooling does SG500-28P-K9 use?

SG500-28P-K9 uses an internal universal AC supply accepting 100-240V AC and two fans without fan-speed control. Maximum consumption reaches 227W with PoE at 110V, compared with 35W system consumption without the PoE load at that voltage. The fixed power arrangement does not provide redundant internal supplies.

What is the difference between SG500-28P-K9 and SG500-28-K9?

SG500-28P-K9 powers attached endpoints through PoE+, while SG500-28-K9 is the non-PoE counterpart. Both models are discontinued. For like-for-like maintenance, the powered model matches installations requiring switch-delivered endpoint power; the non-PoE model matches installations whose endpoints already receive power from another source.

What is the difference between SG500-28P-K9 and SG500-52P-K9?

SG500-28P-K9 has 24 Gigabit access ports, while SG500-52P-K9 has 48 Gigabit access ports. Both models are discontinued. The smaller configuration matches like-for-like maintenance of lower-density installations, while the larger configuration matches existing installations that need the higher access-port count in a single chassis.

What is the difference between SG500-28P-K9 and C1300-24P-4X?

SG500-28P-K9 offers four 1G network uplinks, while C1300-24P-4X provides four 10G SFP+ uplinks. The migration chain ends at C1300-24P-4X. SG500-28P-K9 is a discontinued option for maintaining an existing installation; C1300-24P-4X suits new purchases that require 10G connections toward aggregation.
