Stackable PoE+ Access With Copper and Fiber Uplinks

SG500-52P-K9-NA combines 48 Gigabit PoE+ access ports with four additional Gigabit interfaces in a managed, rack-mount switch. Two additional interfaces offer shared copper/SFP connectivity, while two SFP interfaces can serve as data uplinks or stacking connections. The Small Business 500 model supports Layer 2 switching and static routing between local networks; its fixed uplink architecture does not require a removable network card. The 1U chassis provides hardware stacking rather than management-only grouping. Compared with the discontinued SG500-52-K9, this version adds power delivery to the access connections. For an existing installation, the distinction is whether endpoints receive power through Ethernet or through their own supplies. This is discontinued hardware for continued use in a legacy network, not a current Cisco-supported deployment.

Technical Details

120 Gbps switching capacity supports the switch's wired interfaces, and 77.38 Mpps forwarding performance specifies its packet-processing rate with 64-byte packets. 375W of shared PoE power must be allocated across connected devices rather than treated as a full-power reservation for every access connection. Static IPv4 and IPv6 routing handles local inter-VLAN traffic, but RIP v2 and VRRP are not available on this model. SG500-52P-K9-NA carries 256 MB of memory and 32 MB of flash for its embedded management software and configuration. Its address table accommodates 16384 MAC entries. STP/RSTP/MSTP provides spanning-tree operation, while LACP supports aggregated connections. Browser management, a serial console and network command-line access provide configuration paths. DHCP snooping, IP Source Guard and Dynamic ARP Inspection provide controls for access traffic. Four speed-controlled fans provide active cooling, so installation planning must account for ventilation and audible fan operation rather than treating the chassis as fanless.

Ordering

SG500-52P-K9-NA is offered new sealed or certified refurbished; specify condition and quantity on the purchase order. Refurbished units are inspected and bench-tested for power-on and POST, clean boot, rated-speed links on every port, and PoE output under load on every powered port, with firmware verified and configuration wiped to factory default. ORM's new warranty is up to a 3-year extended term, and certified refurbished coverage is up to 1 year; both conditions include 30-day returns, terms apply, while Cisco coverage ended April 30, 2023. For enterprise and volume orders, ORM Systems accepts POs, offers Net-30 for government, and provides RMA with advance replacement across UK, EU, US and MEA regional stock/RMA operations.

Buying Notes

Buying NotesKey Specs

Migration and service planning

Migration purchases should use C1300-48P-4X rather than the discontinued 550X and CBS350 generations. SG500-52P-K9-NA reached end of sale April 12, 2018; Cisco support ended April 30, 2023.

Fiber link components

Fiber connections require separately ordered transceivers: MGBSX1 supports multimode runs to 500 m, while MGBLX1 supports single-mode runs to 10 km. Match the media and both endpoints before ordering.

Best For

Powered Endpoint Expansion

An endpoint expansion that adds powered devices needs a load schedule before the hardware is ordered. Each powered access port can supply 30W, but port capability does not reserve that amount for every connected device. Specify device power requirements and the allocation policy before issuing the PO.

Existing Stack Extension

An existing compatible hardware stack needs another member and the correct interconnects. SFP-H10GB-CU3M provides a 3 m copper stacking connection, which operates at 5G on this model rather than 10G. Specify the ring or chain layout and count the required connections before ordering the additional hardware.

Replacement Staging

A replacement being staged for a legacy installation needs a repeatable configuration and a traffic-check plan. Port mirroring can send traffic from eight source ports to one destination, and configuration files are text-editable. Specify the monitoring connection and retain the intended configuration file before releasing the order.

Not Suitable If

10G data uplinks to distribution

Data uplinks operate at 1G; the 5G capability is for stacking. C1300-48P-4X provides four 10G SFP+ uplinks while retaining 48 Gigabit access ports.

Dynamic routing or gateway redundancy

Static IPv4 and IPv6 routing is supported, but RIP v2 and VRRP are unavailable on this model. Those requirements exceed its routing capabilities.

Fanless operation in occupied rooms

Four speed-controlled fans make this an actively cooled switch. Acoustic output reaches 54.8 dB at 40°C, so the chassis does not meet a fanless requirement.

Questions & Answers

What does the SG500-52P-K9-NA part number mean?

SG500-52P-K9-NA identifies a Gigabit PoE stackable managed switch in the Small Business 500 family. SG500 identifies the Gigabit family, 52 describes its logical interface count, and P identifies powered access. The SG500-52P-K9 hardware has 48 PoE+ access ports plus four additional Gigabit interfaces.

How is the Small Business 500 series managed?

The Small Business 500 series provides browser management, serial console access, full or menu CLI over SSH or Telnet, SNMP, and Cisco OnPlus integration. HTTP/HTTPS handles browser configuration and monitoring. SNMP versions 1, 2c and 3 provide management-system access, while the CLI supports scripted configuration.

Is SG500-52P-K9-NA end of life?

SG500-52P-K9-NA is discontinued: sales ended April 12, 2018, and Cisco support ended April 30, 2023. Cisco service is no longer available for this hardware. A purchase now is for continued operation of a legacy installation rather than deployment with an active Cisco support lifecycle.

What condition and warranty options does ORM Systems offer for SG500-52P-K9-NA?

ORM Systems offers SG500-52P-K9-NA new sealed with up to a 3-year extended warranty or certified refurbished with up to 1 year. Both conditions include 30-day returns; terms apply. Cisco's original limited lifetime hardware warranty no longer provides coverage because Cisco service ended April 30, 2023.

How much PoE power does SG500-52P-K9-NA provide?

375W is the shared PoE budget for SG500-52P-K9-NA across its 48 powered access ports. An individual powered port supports 30W, subject to the remaining budget. The switch therefore cannot reserve maximum per-port power for every powered connection simultaneously; size the connected-device load before ordering.

Which uplinks does SG500-52P-K9-NA have?

SG500-52P-K9-NA has four additional Gigabit interfaces: two copper/SFP combo interfaces and two SFP interfaces that also support stacking. Each combo interface activates either its copper connection or its SFP connection, not both. Normal data uplinks are 1G; the 5G operating mode is for stacking connections.

Can SG500-52P-K9-NA join a hardware stack?

Yes, SG500-52P-K9-NA supports hardware stacks of eight members managed as one system. Copper stacking operates at 5G using SFP-H10GB-CU1M, SFP-H10GB-CU3M or SFP-H10GB-CU5M for 1 m, 3 m or 5 m connections. Ring and chain layouts are supported, and compatible SF500, SG500 and SG500X models can participate.

Does SG500-52P-K9-NA support routing between VLANs?

Yes, SG500-52P-K9-NA supports static IPv4 and IPv6 routing between local networks, with 2048 static routes for each address family. IPv4 operation supports 256 IP interfaces, while IPv6 supports 128 interfaces. RIP v2 and VRRP are unavailable on this model, so routing and gateway-redundancy requirements must stay within those limits.

Does the Small Business 500 PoE switch need an external power adapter?

No, the SG500-52P-K9 hardware uses an internal universal AC power supply accepting 100-240V AC. Worst-case consumption with PoE reaches 460.5W at 110V, rather than just the power consumed by the switch electronics. Include powered-device demand when sizing the outlet, power distribution and backup-power allocation.

What is the difference between SG500-52P-K9-NA and SG500-52-K9?

SG500-52P-K9-NA supplies endpoint power where SG500-52-K9 is non-PoE; both have 48 Gigabit access ports and four additional interfaces. Both models are discontinued. The powered model suits an existing design that powers devices over Ethernet, while the non-PoE model fits a design with externally powered endpoints.

What is the difference between SG500-52P-K9-NA and SG500-28P-K9?

SG500-52P-K9-NA has 48 powered Gigabit access ports, while SG500-28P-K9 has 24. Both are discontinued members of the same family. The larger model matches a legacy installation needing the higher connection count; the smaller model fits an existing requirement for fewer powered access connections.

What is the difference between SG500-52P-K9-NA and C1300-48P-4X?

C1300-48P-4X provides four 10G SFP+ uplinks, whereas SG500-52P-K9-NA uses 1G data uplinks. The original switch is discontinued, and C1300-48P-4X is the current migration target. The legacy model fits like-for-like continuation of an existing installation; C1300-48P-4X suits a migration requiring 10G uplink connections.
