The Cisco 8300 Secure Routers network interface module fits C8375-E-G2, C8235-E-G2, C8231-E-G2 and Catalyst 8300 C8300-2N2S and C8300-1N1S models in a NIM slot. C8355-G2, C8235-G2 and C8231-G2 have no NIM slot, and Catalyst 8200 Edge Platforms do not take it.

10 Gbps per port is the highest Ethernet rate, and 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps modes depend on the installed SFP or SFP+ transceiver. Four WAN ports share one 10-Gbps-capable internal link, so a full module has a 4 to 1 oversubscribed connection. C-NIM-4X has a 32 mm x 89 mm x 184 mm body and weighs 0.195 kg. Cisco IOS XE Dublin 17.11.1a is the first supported release on Catalyst 8300 Edge Platforms, and Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager needs vmanage-20.11. Secure Router OIR uses stop/start commands; Catalyst 8300 Edge Platform removal requires power-off.

A branch team replacing a failed module in a C8375-E-G2 must match the NIM slot, four SFP/SFP+ optics and the running release. The same spare also fits C8235-E-G2, C8231-E-G2 and Catalyst 8300 models. Count one LAN/WAN C-NIM per chassis before the PO.
A site with 1G and 10G optical handoffs needs four SFP/SFP+ ports in one NIM slot. The far end must match 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps on each port. Count the transceivers separately because the module ships without optics.
A chassis build that needs Layer 2 switching and two routed LAN/WAN ports uses the module in the NIM slot. C-NIM modules run only in the NIM slot, not the SM adapter. Count one LAN/WAN module per chassis and confirm the free slot before the PO.
Host without a NIM slot
C8355-G2, C8235-G2 and C8231-G2 have no NIM slot for C-NIM-4X. Use C8375-E-G2, C8235-E-G2 or C8231-E-G2 for this module.
Catalyst 8200 Edge Platform
C-NIM-4X is not supported on Catalyst 8200 Edge Platforms C8200-1N-4T and C8200L-1N-4T. Use C-NIM-8T or C-NIM-8M for LAN/WAN switching.
PoE or 2.5G mGig
C-NIM-4X has no PoE budget and no RJ-45 mGig ports. Use C-NIM-8M for eight 100M/1G/2.5G RJ-45 ports and 90W UPOE+ on ports 4 to 7.

C-NIM-4X fits C8375-E-G2, C8235-E-G2, C8231-E-G2, C8300-2N2S-4T2X, C8300-2N2S-6T, C8300-1N1S-4T2X and C8300-1N1S-6T. It does not fit C8355-G2, C8235-G2 or C8231-G2 because those models have no NIM slot. It does not fit Catalyst 8200 Edge Platforms.
A C8375-E-G2 uses C-NIM-4X for four 1G/10G SFP/SFP+ LAN/WAN switch ports. The same LAN/WAN C-NIM family includes C-NIM-8T for eight 100 Mbps/1 Gbps RJ-45 ports and C-NIM-8M for eight 100M/1G/2.5G RJ-45 ports with UPOE+. Count one LAN/WAN module per chassis.
C-NIM-4X has four SFP/SFP+ Ethernet ports rated 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps with the matching pluggable. All four ports run Layer 2 switching. The two highest-numbered ports run as native Layer 3 ports and match the Catalyst 8300 embedded WAN port feature set.
C-NIM-4X takes SFP and SFP+ pluggables for SGMII, 1000BASE-X and 10GBASE-R Ethernet. GLC-GE-100FX is the named 100 Mbps SFP option. Transceivers are not included with the module. Match each optic or cable to the far-end speed and interface.
C-NIM-4X runs as one LAN/WAN module per chassis. C8375-E-G2, C8235-E-G2 and C8231-E-G2 each have one NIM slot. C8300-2N2S-4T2X and C8300-2N2S-6T have two default NIM slots, while C8300-1N1S-4T2X and C8300-1N1S-6T have one.
C-NIM-4X gives the host four 10G SFP/SFP+ LAN/WAN ports, IEEE 802.1AE MACsec, Layer 2 switching on every port and native Layer 3 mode on the last two ports. It also carries 1024 VLANs, 4095 VLAN IDs and eight QoS queues per port.
C-NIM-4X needs Cisco IOS XE Dublin 17.11.1a as the first supported release for Catalyst 8300 Edge Platform installation. The Catalyst 8300 software floor for the module is IOS XE 17.11.1 Universal Image, and the higher 17.11.1a release is the order-time floor. Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager needs vmanage-20.11.
C-NIM-4X has host-specific service rules. Cisco 8300 and 8200 Secure Routers use OIR commands before removal and after installation. Catalyst 8300 Edge Platforms allow online insertion in a NIM slot, but online removal is not allowed. Power off before removal on those hosts.
C-NIM-4X gives 10 Gbps SFP/SFP+ ports; C-NIM-8T gives eight RJ-45 ports at 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps. C-NIM-4X fits secure-router NIM-slot models and Catalyst 8300, while C-NIM-8T also fits Catalyst 8200 Edge Platforms. Choose by connector, host and per-port speed.
C-NIM-4X is the SFP/SFP+ 10G option, while C-NIM-8M is the RJ-45 mGig and UPOE+ option. C-NIM-8M gives eight 100M/1G/2.5G RJ-45 ports and 90W UPOE+ on ports 4 to 7. C-NIM-4X fits optical 1G and 10G handoffs.
Cisco has not announced an end-of-sale date for C-NIM-4X. The module serves 8300 Secure Routers, 8200 Secure Routers and Catalyst 8300 hosts with a NIM slot. Keep Catalyst 8300 Edge Platforms on Cisco IOS XE Dublin 17.11.1a or later for installation.
