Line-rate forwarding across all ports and packet sizes allows the copper and fiber interfaces to operate without a packet-size qualification. OSPF, BGP, EIGRP and IS-IS provide dynamic routing, while PIM-SM and PIM-DM cover routed multicast under the supplied tier. 29W consumption measured at 12V DC establishes the base-unit power allowance before expansion loads. IE-3500-8T3S-A supports 24000 unicast MAC addresses, 1024 active VLANs and 32 SVIs for network sizing. User-accessible flash provides 5.1 GB for system files and configuration storage. The IE3500 also supports VRF-lite, L3NAT and MACsec-256 for separate routing domains, address translation and encrypted Ethernet links. When a control cabinet needs additional copper connections without another independent switch, IEM-3500-16T= adds 16 Gigabit ports and takes the system to 27 total interfaces. The expansion module attaches before DIN rail installation and adds 11W of consumption. Specify the module and size the external supply before issuing the PO.
When repeated cabinet builds must fit an existing equipment layout, installation requires a protective enclosure, vertical orientation and 25 mm clearance at the top, bottom, sides and front. Those clearances sit outside the chassis footprint. Specify enclosure space, accessible wiring terminals and mounting orientation on the build schedule before releasing the purchase order.
When acceptance testing includes browser-based provisioning, Cisco IOS XE 26.2.1 disables the embedded web server by default outside Express Setup. IE-3500-8T3S-A identifies an IE3500 modular industrial switch with eight Gigabit copper ports, three Gigabit SFP ports and Network Advantage. IE-3500 denotes the product line, 8T denotes the eight copper interfaces, 3S denotes three SFP interfaces, and A selects Network Advantage rather than Network Essentials.
The Cisco IE3500 Rugged Series supports WebUI, RJ-45 or USB-C console CLI, SSH or Telnet, Catalyst Center, Meraki dashboard, SNMP, NETCONF, RESTCONF, gRPC/MDT and CIP-based tools. Meraki management requires Cisco IOS XE 26.1.1 or later and initially supports the base switch rather than expansion modules.
IE-3500-8T3S-A includes perpetual Network Advantage; Cisco DNA is optional. DNA Essentials IE3500-DNA-E-3Y and DNA Advantage IE3500-DNA-A-3Y start at three years, with five-year and seven-year options. IE-3500-8T3S-A accepts the non-PoE IEM-3500-8T=, IEM-3500-16T=, IEM-3500-8S=, IEM-3500-6T2S= and IEM-3500-14T2S= expansion modules. A single module adds copper, fiber or mixed connectivity. IEM-3500-16T= brings the system to 27 ports. PoE expansion modules require a PoE-capable host and cannot be used with this non-PoE base switch.
IE-3500-8T3S-A uses one or two external DC sources, with a nominal input range of 12-48V DC and an absolute range of 9.6-60V DC. When both sources operate, the higher-voltage source supplies power; the remaining source continues if the other fails. PWR-IE50W-AC= is a compatible external power option.
The Cisco IE3500 Rugged switch requires a protective enclosure, vertical DIN rail installation and at least 25 mm clearance above, below, beside and in front of the unit. Temperature limits depend on enclosure airflow: 60°C in a sealed enclosure, 70°C vented and 75°C with specified forced airflow, starting at -40°C.
IE-3500-8T3S-A supports OSPF, OSPFv3, BGP, IS-IS and EIGRP under Network Advantage, alongside static routing, RIP and PBR. Multicast options include PIM-SM and PIM-DM. The license also supplies VRF-lite and L3NAT, so the purchase must retain Network Advantage when those functions are part of the configuration.
IE-3500-8P3S-A powers eight PoE/PoE+ copper ports with a 240W base-switch budget, while IE-3500-8T3S-A has non-PoE copper ports. Endpoint power is the purchasing distinction. Choose the non-PoE model for separately powered equipment; choose IE-3500-8P3S-A when the switch must deliver power through the access cabling.
IE-3500-8T3S-A includes Network Advantage, while IE-3500-8T3S-E includes Network Essentials on the same eight-copper, three-SFP configuration. Network Advantage adds BGP, EIGRP, IS-IS and VRF-lite. The Essentials model suits requirements within its feature set; the Advantage model suits orders that specifically require those additional routing and virtualization capabilities.

IE-3500-8T3S-A accepts supported 100M or 1G SFP optics, including industrial GLC-FE-100FX-RGD= and GLC-SX-MM-RGD=. Match the optical type at both ends and select the correct fiber medium. Commercial-temperature or extended-temperature transceivers require temperature derating, so optics selection must follow the cabinet's operating conditions rather than connector fit alone.
