IEM-3500-4MU is a fanless industrial expansion module, not a standalone switch. Four copper Ethernet ports support 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps, and 2.5 Gbps connections with PoE, PoE+, and 4PPoE for powered endpoints. The module joins a compatible base switch in a DIN rail assembly, extending the Cisco IE3500 Rugged family without adding a separate switch management system. Fiber connections and upstream connectivity remain with the host because the module has no dedicated uplinks or optical cages. IEM-3500-8T= provides non-PoE copper connections instead, distinguishing a data-only expansion purchase from one that must also deliver endpoint power.
IEM-3500-4MU price is $1,231.65, a 26.2% saving from the Cisco list price of $1,669.00. IEM-3500-4MU is in stock and available for next-day dispatch. (terms applied)

20W of module operating consumption must be included in supply sizing before allocating power to attached devices; that figure excludes PoE output. IEM-3500-4MU receives operating power through its host connection rather than an independent supply. The IEM-3500-4MU= ordering form identifies the expansion hardware without assigning a separate network license tier. PTP is not supported on these expansion ports, and HSR, PRP, and DLR are also excluded. These restrictions matter when assigning timing-sensitive or redundant industrial links. The enclosure measures 82.8 mm wide, 152.4 mm high, and 134.4 mm deep, providing the module dimensions needed for cabinet layout; its 0.98 kg weight must also be included in mounting-load planning. Host processing, software, and management remain separate from the module's physical port expansion.
IEM-3500-4MU is offered new sealed or certified refurbished; refurbished modules are inspected and bench-tested, with every port linked at rated speed and PoE output verified under load on every powered port. Specify condition and module quantity on the purchase order, with any required host hardware on separate lines. Cisco's five-year limited hardware warranty is separate from ORM coverage: new hardware receives up to 3-year extended warranty, certified refurbished hardware up to 1 year, and every condition includes 30-day returns; terms apply. For enterprise and volume orders, PO accepted, Net-30 for government, and RMA with advance replacement; regional stock and RMA cover UK, EU, US, and MEA.

When adding an expansion module during a scheduled hardware change, the host must be de-energized before attachment or removal. The assembly uses four retaining screws and must be joined before DIN rail installation. Include the outage, mounting access, and attachment hardware in the work order.
Where an installed industrial switch needs additional endpoint connections without replacing its base unit, the supported base-and-module combination provides 15 total system ports. Treat the expansion as part of the existing assembly rather than a separately powered device. Confirm cabinet fit, cabling access, and the retained host configuration before the PO.
An independently operating industrial switch
The expansion module cannot operate independently and has no standalone power input or uplinks. A purchase requiring an autonomous network device must include a complete industrial switch.
Expansion on a non-PoE host
PoE expansion modules require a host with native PoE support. A non-PoE base switch is not a supported installation, even when the intended endpoints need data connectivity only.
PTP on the added ports
PTP is not supported on these expansion ports. Precision-timing connections must remain on interfaces that support the required timing behavior rather than being assigned to this module.
HSR, PRP, or DLR expansion
HSR, PRP, and DLR are not supported on this module. An industrial redundancy design requiring those protocols on the added interfaces cannot use these ports for that purpose.

IEM-3500-4MU identifies an IE3500 expansion module with four 2.5G copper ports supporting 4PPoE. The IEM-3500 portion identifies the module family, while 4MU identifies this four-port multigigabit powered configuration. IEM-3500-4MU= is the corresponding ordering form; neither designation identifies a complete, independently operating switch.
IEM-3500-4MU is managed through its host using Web UI, console CLI, SSH, Telnet, SNMP, or optional Catalyst Center management. The module does not provide an independent management system. Meraki dashboard management supports base hardware, while expansion-module support remains planned for a future software release.
Cisco has not announced an end-of-sale date for IE3500 Rugged. IEM-3500-4MU remains an expansion option in this available industrial switch family. The module attaches to a compatible base switch, so an expansion purchase must still be matched to the retained host hardware and software configuration.
IEM-3500-4MU is offered new sealed or certified refurbished, with ORM coverage of up to 3-year extended warranty for new hardware and up to 1 year for certified refurbished hardware. Cisco's separate IE3500 hardware warranty is five-year limited. Both ORM conditions include 30-day returns; terms apply.
IEM-3500-4MU supports 4PPoE delivery up to 90W per port, subject to the host's shared power allocation and installed supply capacity. The module does not introduce an independent PoE budget. Endpoint power must be sized together with base-switch loads and the operating consumption of the assembled hardware.
No, IEM-3500-4MU includes copper endpoint ports but no fiber cages or dedicated uplinks. Upstream connections use the host switch's interfaces. The expansion therefore does not add optical connectivity, and any required fiber connections must be accommodated by the host or another suitable expansion configuration.
No separate Network Essentials or Network Advantage tier is assigned to IEM-3500-4MU; the host supplies the software configuration. Host network licenses are perpetual. Optional Cisco DNA Essentials or Cisco DNA Advantage subscriptions start at three years, and Cisco DNA Advantage requires a Network Advantage host license.
20W is the operating consumption for IEM-3500-4MU, excluding power delivered to attached PoE devices. That operating draw must be included alongside the base switch and endpoint allocations when sizing the host supply. The module receives power through the host connection rather than a separate external adapter.
No, an IE3500 expansion module must not be attached or removed while the host switch is energized. Disconnect power before changing the assembly, secure the module to the base, and connect the expansion before installing the assembly on the DIN rail. Plan the work as a powered-down hardware change.
IEM-3500-4MU provides powered Ethernet connections, whereas IEM-3500-8T= provides non-PoE copper connections. The distinction is whether the added interfaces must deliver endpoint power through the network cable. The powered module suits PoE-dependent devices; the non-PoE module suits data-only connections to equipment with another power source.
IEM-3500-4MU adds copper RJ-45 interfaces, while IEM-3500-8S= adds SFP fiber interfaces. The required connection medium separates these expansion purchases rather than a host software preference. Copper-connected equipment belongs on the RJ-45 module; a requirement for additional optical connections points to the SFP expansion module.
IEM-3500-4MU adds four endpoint ports, while IEM-3500-16P= adds sixteen endpoint ports. For port-density planning, the smaller module covers a limited expansion and the larger module accommodates more connections within the host assembly. Buyers should match the expansion count to the number of additional endpoints being connected.
