IE-3500-8T3S-E identifies an IE3500 modular industrial Ethernet switch: IE-3500 names the family, 8T denotes eight Gigabit copper ports, 3S denotes three Gigabit SFP ports, and E denotes Network Essentials. Modularity refers to expansion capability rather than an empty uplink bay; the three uplink cages are built in.
IE3500 Rugged supports WebUI, CLI over SSH or Telnet, RJ-45 serial console, USB-C console, Cisco Catalyst Center, and Meraki dashboard. SNMP, NETCONF, RESTCONF, and gRPC provide additional management integration. Meraki dashboard requires cloud management mode and corresponding licensing rather than simply connecting through a local browser.

IE3500 Rugged accepts one or two external DC sources through separate front-panel inputs. With both sources active, the higher-voltage source supplies power; the remaining source takes over if the other fails. These are redundant DC feeds, not a pair of internal hot-swappable power supplies.
IE-3500-8T3S-E accepts non-PoE expansion modules including IEM-3500-8T=, IEM-3500-16T=, IEM-3500-8S=, IEM-3500-6T2S=, and IEM-3500-14T2S=. A single expansion module attaches at a time, and expansion modules are not hot-swappable. PoE expansion modules require a PoE-capable host and cannot add powered ports to this data-only base model.
IE-3500-8P3S-E supplies PoE/PoE+ through eight copper ports with a 240W base-switch budget, whereas IE-3500-8T3S-E has data-only ports. Both retain three Gigabit SFP uplinks. Select the T model for separately powered endpoints and the P model when the switch must supply endpoint power.
IE-3500-8T3S-A includes Network Advantage, while IE-3500-8T3S-E includes Network Essentials. Network Advantage adds BGP, EIGRP, and ISIS alongside the lower tier's functions. Specify the E model for Network Essentials operation; specify the A model when those additional dynamic routing protocols are required.
IE-3500-8T3X-E provides three 10G SFP+ uplinks, while IE-3500-8T3S-E has three 1G SFP uplinks. The upstream connection speed determines the hardware choice: the S model serves Gigabit fiber links, while the X model is required when upstream links must operate at 10G.
